I'm going to be pitching a tent and canopy on the sandy beach and am concerned about the stakes not staying in place during windy conditions. Suggestions?

The ones that come with most tents will not hold-get the about one foot long V metal ones from Wally World and put a pretty good angle on them when driving them in. Also the really long spike nails from hardware store work good-pound them deep, you can use the rope to find them.

I've been looking in the pet section at the corkscrew thing that is called a spiral stake, 18" long with a large ring/loop on the end. Think 18" into the sand will be good enough?

Yes but would be much more expensive than the metal ones at Wallmart! Looked at one after I posted and it was 14" or longer.

Doubletrouble....ask me in 11 days if camping on the beach is fun. Having spent 1 night in a tent in my ENTIRE life, am I overdoing it with 7 nights at 1 time? Beginning July 11th I'll know the answer.
PS: I'm taking extra $$$ if I need a motel room.

Albyak...thanks for the info. The corkscrew things are expensive ($4.40) each. Would have to buy 12-15 for tent/rainfly/canopy. I also got advice for a cheap fix....use regular stakes and put a Wallyworld bag of sand on them.

Carry a bunch of mosquito coils, the sand flies can penetrate most screen and that is the only way to keep them away.

My 7 day camping trip in a tent to Jacksonville, Fl lasted 3 1/2 days. Campsite flooded 2 times and water got in the tent. Campsite was a bowl shapped area and small. Water in restrooms and showers were off for 4 hrs one day. I camped on the shore of the St Johns River and was told the beach was 2 blocks away. Turned out it was 4 blocks. So much for tents and staying in a city owned/managed campground.

Next time you come to Fla camping let me know I have an acre on a creek not far (20 miles) from Disney, bring a canoe and fish the creek-no facilities, just keep it clean.

Camped on beach once upon a time. At Nags Head, NC. Had 2 squalls come through in one night, ended up sleeping in the truck after the 2nd one hit. Craziest damn weather I ever saw.
Just consider it all an adventure and better luck next time.

Hard to believe but I'm dumb enough to try camping in a tent again. This time in cooler weather (Oct) and a different location-Pabama City Beach. Not a primitive site but one with water and electricity. Wish me luck.

Like the new photo
I did a night like that at Captiva Pass in Fla, on a cot wrapped in plastic, quite a light show and the two with me in a tent were soaked, but I was dry.

Anywhere on the Oregon Coast is nice for camping. But if you camp at Cape Blanco State Park, be prepared for the wind there! Windiest spot in the continental United States!

Hi not to interrupt but when we went we used 3 quarter pic pipe cut at angle to go in sand...had holes drilled in top to hook to...was 12 inches long....worked great....

The state of south Dakota made it illegal to go shore camping along the Missouri River so I guess we're just going to have to write me some tickets lol

You can also use a wide shovel like tent post that will hold in sand better...
