I take it you mean JUST as an ego boost, and nothing more. Everyone gets used for ego boosts occasionally, but most of the time the person remains a friend or mate.
The just-plain users are annoying. Easiest way to tell for me, has been that they show up shortly after pretending to care for me, with their real target on their arm, and introduce me as an acquaintance, if at all. Sometimes they pretend not to have ever seen me before.
The more subtle ones only call when they need something, and as soon as they feel better, they invest all their energy in someone or something else.
