(218k miles) I have a chance to buy a wrecked (65k miles )97 f150 with the 5liter (302)v-8 with an automatic transmission. Should I keep the 5speed manual and have it rebuilt or should I go through the hassle of changing the rear end gearing? I would rather keep the 5speed but not sure it would hold up to the extra hp. A t56 does better and can hold over 700.

jeepers10 Hillsborough, NC 38, joined Sep. 2014	the m5 used on the 4.9s was also used on the 302 in the full sized Broncos, just have to crossreference the actual model as there was a light duty and a medium duty version iif it's the md t'll be drivable up to the point where you're beating on it heavy I underrated the transmission on a ranger swap, it pretzeled the driveshaft well before doing damage to the transmission so I just kept a spare in the bed. was just a cheap toy I put together from parts that were taking up space in the shop so I never went the tom woods / T route it'll last you long enough to get the build bugs out, can replace it should you actually break it or swap in an upgrade later. keep your foot off the floor in first gear and it may just last you awhile, had almost 40k on mine before a tree fell on it while I was overseas [Edited 10/12/2014 2:07:39 AM ]

irish_l Ashland, OR 40, joined Oct. 2014	Haha..the 302 has the same torque as the inline 6cyl....and why would you want to go to an auto? Manual transmissions are much more reliable...just put in a new clutch kit, and drain the trans and put in royal purple, it won't wear any more.

The M52R2 is actually a much more robust trans than the T-5 and is what is in the F series with the inline 6. It will handle the power just fine.
