Formerly it was defined by the requirement for governmental licensure, which usually required examinations for competency. Now however, the government requires licensing for almost any work above general labor. So it seems to mean anyone who gets paid for specific work. As opposed to a hobbyist.

Heck, I've had so many certifications in the past it's not funny. One I took one quarter in collage and was board. Than again I hit the books way before I went. Wound up challenging the rest and passed the test in like 5 min. Now days that paper seems that it's not worth much but for wiping my rear end with. Got a couple more certifications that seem to be finally starting to take off. Seems like it doesn't matter what you do for a profession. As long as it brings in the green backs. Heck, I used to keep an old 286 around that I could mess the jumpers and a few things. That would of served as part of a test for if I was to consider hiring anyone would have to pass. Would have to know their IRQ's, DMA's, Base Port Address and more. Now I find myself back into basic RF. Bit less of a headake, but you still got to know your stuff. Specially with the rules and the NEC Book.

I obtained a Bachelor of Education degree and taught for enough years to share the holidays with my daughters while they were in school. The reason I chose that career was to make sure that my children knew me. That being successful and they all graduating from school that profession was no longer important. I have the love and respect of all my daughters BECAUSE I planned my life to accomodate their routines.

Most actual 'professionals' consider the teaching profession to be the bottom rung of the professional ladder. Perhaps because it only takes five years (including the one year of internship) instead of the six or more years that many other professions require. It also is one of the lower paying professions and many see the Education majors in university as 'persons who can't do - teach. Also persons who can't teach - teach others to teach.'

Anyways there are lots of reasons for choosing a career path. I had my reasons at the time and now I am a "Beatnik". I wouldn't consider that a 'profession' but having accomplished one of the most important life goals it is not necessary for me to expain myself to anyone.

I find that the tragedy of a thread named "professionals" is that it encourages a sort of arrogance or elitism. This is not always true but my confidantes are persons of character and what educational achievements are not particuarly relevant.

Some like money, power and positions so limiting their 'hunting grounds' to the professional domain is profitable. Advice to them - steer clear of me - you'll be wasting your time.

D

Some of the so-called "professionals" I have met over the years, couldn't change a flat tire. Nor could they properly jump start or hook up a battery charger to a vehicle.

Then they look down upon guys like myself who can do these things, and more.

I consider myself a professional at what I do for a living, even though I don't have a doctorate or a degree hanging upon my wall. Although I do have quite a number of tech courses under my belt.

I wouldn't go with that analogy. I was a truck driver for a short period of time, and even though my fellow truckers were also earning a paycheck, I would have to classify a great number of them as nothing more than steering wheel holders.

Even today I see it. On many of the expressways in and around the Chicago area, there are signs clearly stating that trucks are supposed to be using the 2 right lanes. This is assuming that said drivers can read, write, and understand, the English language.

I was in an emergency vehicle last winter, and cut off by a trucker driving down the shoulder to get around me. In a blinding snow storm. If I could have read his plate or gotten a better description of him, that guy would have been in a world of hurt.

Often refers to your mode of pay.

Hourly - hourly paid

Salaried non professional - gets overtime over 40 weekly. But may work less than 40 and still get paid the salary. Usually technician types.

Professional - Degree reauired job and no OT. Engineers, Managers, Dr.

Lawyers I know are commission or salary with incentive.

Any profession that pays the bills. I am a professional photographer. I am also a senior lead trainer for the largest photography company in the US. My bills are paid by the photos I take.

I am insulted by people that say they are professional photographers.. because they have a good camera.. and have no clue how to use it. I have a really cool stove, but that doesn't make me a chef.

That statement was spot on. I guess the CZ75 9mm hand gun I rented a number of years ago at the shooting range didn't make me an expert sniper either.

Although I did get an inferiority complex. A few lanes down, Rambo brought out his .50 caliber. His was much bigger than mine.

You only consider those professionals? What about a contract killer?

That is a very tough field to break into nowadays and I commend you for sticking with it. But honestly anyone with a decent camera some skill and photoshop can be an expert photographer. It used to cost a fortune and you had to burn through hundreds of rolls of expensive film and processing to get a few good pics. Now you can shoot hundreds of pics and it costs you nothing but batteries. Put me in the same situations you get to be in and I bet I could take the right pics and be just as good as you.

Photography is situation and right place right time. Its not rocket science sorry! Also its who you know. I'm a dam good photographer but nobody knows me..

never met a lawyer, in private practice, not a corporation, who didn't charge by the hour if not contingency. never met a garbage man who wasn't salaried.
