A buddy of mine up in WA has 3 different properties and at all 3 of them he has crows that he feeds. At his place on the island and the one in town he has a couple that he swears are the same birds that he's been feeding forever - years and years...he talks to them and they respond- I've heard them over the phone...extremely smart critters...

I only get ones that fly over my place once in awhile...I am guessing that they were probably shot at out here where I live so they don't hang around this area. I wouldn't mind getting them to stop once in awhile - but have not had the proper lure out when they flew over...

This winter I have a hawk that visits my yard almost every day. My downy and hairy woodpeckers stopped coming along with the blue jays, cardinals and black capped chickadees.

I have a hawk hanging around my area too. He has tried a couple of times to get my chickens! The birds are too big for him though! I've noticed the last week or two that he doesn't seem to be as active. My doves are back making more noise - so maybe the hawk is busy someplace else? My woodpeckers are not as plentiful this year and I think it's because of all the new people out here and lots of them shoot birds...

Can they legally shoot native birds? It's not allowed here.
Have you ever hand fed some of the birds? I have found blue jays and chickadees very easy. The blue jay would land on the door and stare in or "knock".

I also had a crow that would call out to me for a hotdog, lol.

I hated moving to the city. I don't dare hand feed them or make them trusting of humans here. I am afraid people might harm or trap them. I still, on occasion, have some beggars that I will give peanuts to.

Actually I don't know about the shooting...it is country and you can legally shoot anything on your property that is "molesting" anything - as long as you have done your best to keep them out. Like fencing a garden to keep the deer out. I've had them walk under an open double gate and right into the garden - game people said i could have just shot it...I prefer having dogs that chase them away!

The only birds I've had close are the hummingbirds and almost all of my friends and all of my children have been able to pet one...i've lost count of how many i've held...

Watched a fox nail one of my chickens - didn't see it actually get it - I heard the squawk and walked over to my hill and there it was with the chicken in it's mouth...idiot dropped it and ran when it saw me!!! tried to get it to come back and just take it - would have saved me from burying the dang thing!

I love hummingbirds! I haven't seen too many up close. What a wonderful memory and gift to pass on to your children and friends.
That's funny about the fox. At least he has a healthy fear of humans. The foxes, where my sister lives, will snatch bread from your hands if you're not careful. It is tempting to feed the young ones but we know it isn't a safe or smart idea. They need to be kept wild.

Very nice.

I have suet cakes out back and throw some bread pieces in front. The squirrels eat some too.

I am growing more sunflowers this year for bird food. I have both the hard shelled and soft shelled varieties. I am also practicing growing Lima beans this year. I hope to not have to buy food for birds for the winter, eventually. We also have a duck, he is my Organics Meister. He takes care of pests whenever he tags along with me when I move containers around. I try to save worms whenever ducky isn't around, and give them their own "condo" container. I prefer he take care of the other pests first.

I hope to start taking pictures once the birds get more used to me.

Have deer feeders at hunt camp in GA and love to watch the birds come to them...the most unusual site I have seen there is a small buck came by with 7 small birds feeding on his parasites, reminded me of the shrimp that clean parasites from fish. They lit all over him, even picking things from around his eyes. He seemed to enjoy them and only his back skin shook as if to get a fly off when they landed there. He did not even swish his tail at them.

I enjoy watching all birds but those that make my enjoyment most complete are the little birds who take on the hulking meanies. Pure, comedy in nature ... most of the time.
