I have a 97 VW Jetta, the weather stripping around the trunk lid is shot and needs to be replaced. The problem I'm running into is the price.Body shops want $130-$160 to replace it.Thats just to much to par for a chunk of rubber.I need to find weather stripping for a reasonable price and I will replace it myself.
Any ideas??

Performance Years is a good reproduction company, but deals with the old musclecars.
It probably wouldn't hurt to give them a call, because im sure they have references to give you on parts for imports

vw dealer would probably order the part for you, if you don't want to pay for installation.

Just a door weather strip for a dodge pickup cost $80-100. It is factory molded to have correct placement of retaining clips. Any non-aftermarket weatherstrip is not going to fit exact. And quite possibly may fit worse and cause more leaks than simply your wore out weatherstrip. They're fairly easy to replace yourself. What does the dealership want just for the factory weatherstrip? See if they'll give you the part number and do some searching for it on the web perhaps for cheaper

If you think you are going to find good parts in a junkyard for a vehicle almost 20 years old, guess again. Especially rubber parts. Those like to degrade almost as fast as our vehicles here in the rust belt.

Besides, the volume of foreign cars verses domestics is a fraction. At least from the ones I have gone to. My favorite junkyard, puts all the foreign vehicles in one sector of their lot. That sector isn't 1/4 of their total acreage.

Also, due to the amount of vehicles coming in daily, space is at a premium. That car crusher is going almost non stop. Out with the old, and in with the new. Older vehicles are not where the money is. Junkyard wise.......

I guess a person could spend 130 dollars running around looking for a bargain seal, which might not work well.

My last few trips to the junkyard (years ago) I found the junk prices too high. The few dollars difference between new and used wasn't worth it.
