I'm wanting to buy a suv to used mostly for fishing planning on around $5000 on it.
I need something to tow boats and be able to camp in it a couple of nights in a row at lakes. I want 4wd or at least limited slip rearend .
I am considering ford & chevy/GMC or maybe an import ( no Mopar I had bad luck with them )
No compacts ( not enough room )
Any body got a favorite or advice , what models are good or bad in your opinion?

I would probably start at 9 grand.
at 5grand,you're asking for someone elses problem SUV,or one that doesn't have much life left in it.

sounds to me for what you want a vehicle for; that you would be better off with a pick up truck with a good topper on it. it will pull a trailer, and you can put an air mattress in the bed and camp in the back of it.JMO
fastpony is right a good suv is very expensive. I would get a full size pick up truck, a ford or a chevy JMO

Good advise. GM SUV's, like the envoy, have car transmissions. Don't plan on hauling anything bigger than a bass boat, and avoid any hills. Don't park them inside a garage either. Unless you have 0 deductible for fire damage.

I got rid of my SUV 15 years ago. Between the poor fuel economy, repairs, and maintenance, I had had it.

My camping is now done at hotels, and if and when I feel the need to get onto a boat, my uncle has one. In Wyoming. A great place to visit and stay a while.

@ fastpony I wish I had that kind of cash to put in to it but I'm building a house on 5 acres of mountain now so it's not in the budget for a couple of years unless I come out of retirement.

@ louie I have a F150 now but the cops frown on loading 5 grandkids in back to go to the fishing hole.

@Irving Well living on the mountains kind of leaves the lightweights out any way thinking I want 3/4 ton to pull the pontoon boat.

Pontoon boat. Yeah, you will need a truck with a frame.

Yeah fastpony I don't expect a creampuff at that price.
I expect to have to do some work on it.
As long as I can get a couple of 30 mile round trips to the lake during the summer months I'll be okay with it.

I wouldn't trust anything for that price to be driven daily

That many people, with that big of a boat, you almost need a Chevy Suburban. But to be honest, 1irving is kinda right about the trannies. They are absolutely hit or miss and that is coming from a diehard Chevy guy. You need a V8 with a decent amount of hp. So I recommend the 1998 and up Surburban and when towing, keep it out of overdrive, that was the weakest point of the tranny.

Pulling power and kid room? Dare I say diesel Excursion? They're coming down in price. Though a decent one might take some searching.

a suburban would prob be good, I have a 2011 Tahoe, 4x4 with a 5.3 engine, and it will pull the a** off a pontoon boat, but even with 3rd row seating, it will only seat 6 people.

For 5 grand you can get one slick four door duallie chevy or suburban. Plenty of seat belts, cargo space, and towing capacity and easy to service if any is needed.

I see them all day long for 5k with newer engines/trannies.

I have an 85 suburban with only two nickel sized spots of rust and 200k on it. I use it to pull my boat to duck hunt. Drove it 1500 miles round trip not too long ago. Still trustworthy.

How heavy is your boat?

I've pulled a 3500lb boat/trailer hundreds of miles w/ a 4.0 Six 4X4 jeep Cherokee. Great all-around vehicles & you can find a very nice one for @ 5K.

Curb weight 6600 boat & trailer and the roads here make a 6% grade look like a speedbump.

Yeah I have been looking in the Autotrader online and finding lots of surburbans and excursions @ 5 grand in my 300mile radius.

Just wanting to know what models will do the job.

Gotcha.

At that weight, you need one of the big boys, complete w/ tow package. My buddy has a Suburban 4X4 that still runs great w/ close to 200K on the clock.

Might look more towards a 2500 suburban. They're harder to find but they usually have seemed more maintained because they were owned by people who used them to tow. Good and bad to it. They could be completely wore out or well maintained.

I LOVE my old 2500 suburban

personal vehicles that have been used a lot to tow large boats, or trailers, could have serious transmission problems. so beware

Can be. But 3/4 ton chassis were geared more for towing capabilities. Even a 90s suburban with a bad transmission can be bought and you could replace the transmission and still only have 5k into it oftentimes. But no doubt. Check things out thoroughly before buying and negotiate price accordingly.
