My 9 year old chihuahua, Cupid, just had his second seizure in 10 weeks. It lasted 3 minutes and was extremely intense. I'm so scared for him. I don't have money for his vet to see him until Monday. In the meantime if you all could keep him in your prayers I would truly appreciate it. As would Cupid!!!
Thank you!

I'm not a Veterinarian these are some things
that could cause the seizures.
Hereditary
Low blood sugar
Neurological disorders

Take him to the Vets as soon as possible,
my prayers are with the both of you.

Has Cupid been to the vet, yet? Any word on his condition?

My 15 year old Yorkie-Poo started having seizures about 2 years ago. They aren't very often, so she is still being monitored by myself and the vet. I tell him her actions/reactions and we go step by step. So far, because of her age, and the seizures not being often, and because she has heart issues, for now, we are holding off on medications.

If you don't do so, feed him on a schedule 2-3 small meals per day, (as opposed to one large meal- to keep blood sugar levels even) and make sure there is plenty of water available all the time.

Epilepsy isn't caused by blood sugar drops or surges or from dehydration, these are triggers that throws them into a seizure. Flashing lights, sudden loud sounds, barometric pressure changes, etc are also triggers.

Fish oil may also trigger- if you've changed foods recently, and there is fish oil in it, or you've added the supplement to his diet.

With my dogs, I always try to think back to when the change occurred, and what, if anything changed at that time. I can usually pin point and figure it out. My vet and his assistant tell me that I should never doubt myself with my animals, because I am usually on top of things with their issues, and have good instincts on what to do. (Makes me feel good to hear it, but I still doubt myself and run everything past them).

Anyway. Hope he's doing better.

Your Welcome.

I suggest you both get the Merritt Bible,
its a medical handbook that you need when
going to become a veterinarian. It comes in
handy.

Cupid goes to the vet on Friday.
Cupid has been his normal self since the seizure.
I truly appreciate the advice and kind thoughts.
I'll post an update after we see the vet!

Take care everyone. Hugs.

That's standard. You can't tell a person is epileptic, until they have a seizure. Once it's over, they may be tired for a while and need to rest, but other than that, they are otherwise seemingly fine.

When Cupid has a seizure, take a deep breath and stay calm, because they sense when you are upset, and it makes them scared. Pet him and speak calmly to him, telling him it's alright during one. This is what I do with Gypsy. It seems to help them come out of it quicker. When it's over, it is normal for it take several minutes to return to their normal happy selves.

I've seen Gypsy "swim" (moving her legs in a swimming or running motion while laying down), I've seen her throw her head back and scream, and I've seen her walk around, and start walking backwards. That was really weird. I petted her, and when I got no response, that's when I knew she was in seizure. She loves being petted, and will always wag her tail and put her face in my hand- and she didn't do either.

Cupid's may well be age related epilepsy. 9 is going into those senior years. Oh, and even if he's placed on seizure meds, he still may have one now and again. Let the vet know when and if he does, as that usually means he needs a medicine adjustment. He'll still have a long and happy life with you.

Thank you msreesi for the information. It really helps to hear from someone who has/is going through it. Give Gypsy a hug from me and Cupid.

I made an error about Cupids vet appt. so I need to reschedule. If I can't get him seen tomorrow then hopefully on Monday.
Be well!!
