Both players had short careers...both players had one fantastic year and one great year during the course of their respective major league playing days...Dizzy Dean, however, was a much more colorful guy and provided the press with, yes, much more interesting interviews than Roger Maris and, yep, that is probably why Dizzy found a place in the HOF and why Maris failed to gain acceptance.

Roger Maris was two time MVP so he had two great yrs...he was a quiet man...like i am...lol ..he had one perfect swing from left side...he held the one season HR record longer then ruth had...and if it was not for stroids era he'd prob still hold record...jmo

We will never know but I agree with you that the 61 home runs that Maris hit in one season would still be the single season home run record if it were not for the roids era. BUT, Babe hit 60 in a 154 game season and Roger had not reached 60 in 154 games during 1961. I think my man Mickey hit a few that year too including one that almost left Yankee Stadium.

We will never know but I agree with you that the 61 home runs that Maris hit in one season would still be the single season home run record if it were not for the roids era. BUT, Babe hit 60 in a 154 game season and Roger had not reached 60 in 154 games during 1961. I think my man Mickey hit a few that year too including one that almost left Yankee Stadium.
Remember they played day games in babes time and expansion took place when maris played plus as a player fans away wanted mick to break record. Mick had hip infection ..roger lost hair from being the man he was ...another thing maris batted third and was not walked intentionally in 61 once...a rifle of arm and covered center for mick on balls hit to right center before renovation...

Mick had hip infection ..roger lost hair from being the man he was ...another thing maris batted third and was not walked intentionally in 61 once...a rifle of arm and covered center for mick on balls hit to right center before renovation...
Roger also smoked two packs of cigarettes in the dugout during a nine inning game. When he became a Cardinal I even lit a few of them for him in spring training when he couldn't find his lighter.

It was either they smoked or chewed tobacco...i chewed big league bubble gum or was it called big league chew... lol...i was invited to a minor league game for Triple A team before yanks game and roger sat in stands reading a newspaper and smoking. ..sad...i loved his swing and his arm..amazing he did not get one intentional walk in 61 all yr long...

What's amazing is that once Roger became a Cardinal he no longer hit with power but he sure did hit for average with many game winning hits. He even picked up the nickname "Mr. Clutch" for awhile.

1967: Maris had his best world series at the plate...nope, it was not in 1961--of course, the Yankees did not need Maris to have a great world series during that particular October.

Mantle hit 54 if I remember correctly. Wasn't he injured part of the year? If not for that he might have broken the record too.
