Fish, hunt, garden, preserve...but you are absolutely right...I have to have electricity for my refrigerator, freezer and washing machine! My tractor runs on diesel and my tiller runs on gas. I'm not interested in using horses for the workload. I do use methane from the earth for heat, hot water and indoor cooking...the well was drilled in the late 1800s and still produces what I need. You won't catch me cutting down trees for firewood or chopping it either...I will gather downed wood for an outdoor fire and cook dinner.

Yes I designed the house that will accept water from a creek in a filtering system to make it drinkable and I am still figuring out what size motor to put on to make 200 amp service to the house. the house has 1 bedroom one utility room 1 bathroom kitchen living room. in the utility room will be two freezers and cupboard and counter and things like a bread maker, meat grinder, meat slicer,Dehydrator. and I only cut dead trees or windfalls it makes good firewood main source of heat would be a pellet stove the wood stove would be for When ::signcoolthe power goes out I can still cook and heat

So a pellet stove is living off the land? Seems to me you would be dependent on a pellet company and have to go to town to purchase same!

I figured you were all solar paneled up.
I'm guessing you aren't off the grid.

What kinds of grains and legume crops do you grow on your land ?

Do you press olives for your cooking oil ?
or some other plant / animal source ?

Do you have milk cows / goats ?

How about nuts ?
Do you have a variety of producing nut trees ?

Do you pick and eat wild greens and berries ?

Funny, when you put up some real questions, they all run LOL People think catching a few fish or shooting an occasional deer is "living off the land"

I keep enough supplies to make it a couple of years, but really don't look forward to "having" to do it

Lots of veggies in general. No grains as of yet. I fish, and hunt. I can, bake, quilt, crochet, etc.. I have never been very materialistic and will be living off grid in 3.5 yrs.

"Foxfire" books have lots of info. for making hands on projects.

The "Boy Scoots Hand Book" is a great source of info. on how to make thing by hand from natural and salvaged materials and much more.

This book is excelent tool (book) for any homesteaders.

Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties: The Classic Guide to Building ...

Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties: The Classic Guide to Building Wilderness Shelters (Dover Books on Architecture) [D. C. Beard] on Amazon.com. ... to build everything from a bark teepee and a tree-top house to a log cabin and a sod house.

This excellent hands-on guide by one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America contains a wealth of practical instruction and advice on how to build everything from a bark teepee and a tree-top house to a log cabin and a sod house. No professional architects are needed here; and knowing how to use an axe is more important than possessing carpentry skills.

More than 300 of the author's own illustrations and a clear, easy-to-follow text enable campers to create such lodgings as half-cave shelters, beaver mat huts, birch bark shacks, over-water camps, a Navajo hogan, and a pole house. Additional chapters provide information on how to use an axe, split and notch logs, make a fireplace, and even build appropriate gateways to log houses, game preserves, ranches, and other open areas.

An invaluable book for scouts, campers, hikers, and hunters of all ages, this guide and its fascinating collection of outdoor lore "still has intrinsic value," said Whole Earth Magazine, and will be of keen interest to any modern homesteader.

Have you run your electric and power lines underground from your elder neighbors residence to your place?

My hat is off to anyone who can do what you do. I have solar for emergency and long camping trips even keep a couple 60 lb bags of mixing salt for emergency preserving of freezer foods, many filled liquefied gas tanks to survive a long time in emergency but living with no well four months a year in Alaska is about as much survivalist as I want to be. Have self harvested almost all my own meat, fish and seafood all my life and given enough away to receive many perks in life, though never sold or direct traded other than furs and gator hides.

at least you guys have the most important thing needed to live off the land- mindset-I'm pretty sure the op meant living up in the mountains and staying there, for the most part & with no electric. Imagine a small structure & wood burning stove, cot and sleeping bag. It's not tough in this day and age as far as isolation/loneliness goes, since it's hard to find someplace without cell coverage/internets. And once a person realizes they really only need a city for medical and supplies, they may even come to prefer off grid to city living forever. Spent considerable time in the hills a long time ago and the big thing is to be "dialed in" there's no need to go all primitive, if you try to, I doubt you'd last.

I'm very interested in living independent from the grocery store. Gardening and farming are great ways to do that. There are also other great ways to conserve energy like solar, smaller fridges and wood heat and hot water. I'm hoping to find a man that would be able to work on these projects with me.

I like the simple hermit life.
Food is wandering around in the woods or grown in my garden.
Heat is supplied by by mother nature.
It's a very healthy challenge to provide for one's self and not be stuck in the rat race of cities and towns
Not worrying about keeping up with the joneses
