I find it to be a rather common example of romanticizing self-indulgence, and trying to turn it from tawdry crap, into twinkling stars.
It's written by a GUY, so keep that in mind. And it's a story of a woman who uses a guy for sex, and perhaps to get pregnant as crudely as possible, and then use another guy for life support and child-raising resources.
Given how self-absorbed a lot of people are, I'm sure this sort of thing has happened many times. But I'm with the lead singer, Ann Wilson: she hates it.

That's the point. That's why Ann Wilson hates it, and why Heart wont perform it anymore. Because it's BOTH those things.
Notice how the story goes, that this imaginary woman
* selects a stranger who she picks up hitchhiking, not someone she vetted in any way whatsoever, other than liking how he slouches;
* selects a biological father for her child, WITHOUT consulting her "main man" in any way or at any time, nor allowing HIM to have a say in whether he wants to raise this other guy's progeny;
* and doesn't tell her money-source guy even AFTER the deed is done.
And all because SHE wants a child, and is impatient with waiting for the unseen guy to do the deed for her.
