The greens are super fast today. I have seen a 4 putt and a 5 putt!

The announcer said that the greens were 13 on the stimpmeter. That is like putting on your garage concrete floor.

Congrats to Jason Day, the undisputed #1 Player in Golf today. I agreed with the tournament announcers that he really does not have any weaknesses in his game. Jason has been contacting Tiger Woods for tips on the mental game. Particularly how to mentally handle being on the top of his game for an extended period of time.

Ricky Fowler missed the cut and was very gracious in handing the trophy to Jason Day. When asked about missing the cut, he said "it happens!"

Father's Day and the US Open will be here before you know it. I look forward to seeing the tour players play Oakmont. Take a guided tour of the course....

Old Guys/golfers rule? YUP. So who is our top ruler in the US...The President...

Politics aside, what is the average age of the three major Presidential Candidates left? How old will they be after 8 years as President? In your lifetime, how many of the Presidents do you know play(ed) golf? Eisenhower & Bill Clinton were obsessive golfers, playing 2-3 times a week. Trump owns many golf courses, but has a swing I would not recommend. LOL. Carter was the least of the Presidential Golfers in my lifetime. Is that why he wasn't re-elected? Interesting article about President Carter and other Presidents who played golf .....

I did hear Michelson's run in with the SEC on the news the past few days. He is very lucky, and I am surprised that he did not know better. It looks like he admitted it right away and settled quickly with the SEC. They probably had his phone tapped. I guess we all make mistakes. I haven't heard any fallout by his sponsors, which usually follows events like this.

You do know he is right handed, but was taught to play left handed on purpose? My youngest daughter is left handed and I taught her golf on right handed clubs for the same reason. The typical swing setup for right and left handed club sets have your strong arm/hand passive in the swing and your other arm/hand as a more powerful component of the setup. Once you have golfed for years one way (right/left handed clubs), I would not recommend changing the club orientation.

I have discovered many standard golf teachings and practices to be less than optimal or outright wrong after learning and playing golf for many years and teaching three daughters to the point of competitive golf.

That's a great way to close out a tournament. I guess we will see him at the Olympics?

Top Irish Golfers:

1. Rory McIlroy. At 25 years old he is already at the top of the heap with 16 worldwide wins, including four major championships. Should the Northern Irishman win the Masters next month, he'll complete the career Grand Slam and have won his third straight major championship.

2. Padraig Harrington. He was the first Irishman to win multiple majors, capturing the Open Championship in 2007 and 2008 and the PGA Championship in 2008. He has 30 career wins and reached as high as No. 3 in the world.

3. Christy O'Connor Sr.: None of his 44 career titles include a major championship, but he did finish in the top 10 at The Open Championship 10 times in his career, including second in 1965. He also played in every Ryder Cup between 1955 and 1973 for Great Britain & Ireland.

4. Darren Clarke: The Northern Irishman has 22 wins around the world, including the 2011 Open Championship at Royal St. George's. He also finished second at the 1997 Open Championship and third at the 2001 Open Championship and has two World Golf Championships titles to his credit. He also played in five Ryder Cups and was on the winning team four times.

5. Graeme McDowell: The Ulsterman won the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and two years later finished second at Olympic. He has 13 career wins as a professional and has played in four Ryder Cups, playing on the winning team three times. McDowell has reached as high as No. 3 in the world.

I saw Graeme McDowell play on his Saturday round of the US Open at Pebble. The interesting thing is the spectators were following Tiger, but few were following Graeme, who won the tournament?

I wish women's golf was covered like men's golf. I have three daughters that all play golf. My older two were on their High School team and were undefeated for 3 years. My youngest daughter started at age 1, is now 12 and has played in JR tournaments for 2 years. More and more women are playing golf, because golf is the sport of choice for many professionals, and more and more women are becoming professionals. Only 19% of all golfers are women, according to the National Golf Foundation. The number of women who are actively engaged in the sport is even less. The coverage on the network tv reflects its audience and is primarily geared towards the PGA and Champions Tours (male tours). The golf channel has lots of LPGA tournaments, and women's tournament around the world (European, Asian, Korean tours). I typically attend two LPGA tournament each year with my daughters, as well as several PGA tournaments.

Thanks for the info. I know it took years for women to be recognized in basketball. It is just a little disheartening that women's sports is always pushed to the back burner.

I appreciate the information. I hope your daughters do well in their golfing experiences.

Crim~~ I'm not much about golf but aren't you selling the PGA short in your post?

Didn't Trump sign a 10 year contract a few years ago with the PGA which allowed the PGA to put out of the contract with Trump if tour sponsership couldn't be financially met to cover the cost of the Trump PGA site after Cadillac Corporation withdrew from the Trump sponsorship?

Isn't Donald Trump the reason for the loss of the PGA tour because Cadillac dislikes Trump?

Oops!

Don't you have $9.5 million dollars yourself, Donald? You could have covered the cost of the tour yourself with just the loose change in your deep pockets, couldn't you? Is this a premonition of what will happen to other American jobs if Trump gets elected?

Today is the first official day of the 2016 US Open, June 13-19.

Who do you think will win?

Who do you want to win?

Will the top players be playing extra hard to make the 2016 Olympics? see:

http://www.igfgolf.org/olympic-games/qualification-system/ogr-men/

Have you ever played or been to Oakmont?

The official 2016 Tournament site is at:

http://www.usopen.com/index.html

The players entered in the tournament are found at:

http://www.usopen.com/en_US/players/index.html

The field includes 12 former US Open Champions:

http://www.usopen.com/en_US/players/index.html

My favorite US Open former winner is Ernie Els, who won at Oakmont in a great playoff. I don't expect him to win, but I hope he makes the cut and is at least in the top ten finishers.

The Oakmont Golf Course is a great course and can be seen at:

http://www.usopen.com/en_US/course/index.html

Enjoy the tournament

Remember Father's Day is Sunday, so let your dad know he is appreciated for what he has done for you. My dad introduced me to golf, and has passed on to the play his favorite, the Nassau game, with the golfing Gods

FYI. Nassau also is known as "2-2-2", and "Best Nines." The Nassau is a type of bet in golf that is essentially three separate bets. Money is wagered on the best match play score in the front nine (holes 1–9), back nine (holes 10–18), and total 18 holes. The Nassau is one of golf's most classic and most popular wagers.

Quote from cupocheer:
Who cares.

Golfers care, especially the wives of the US Open players this week. LOL. Think about playing a nice game of golf with your friends or new boyfriend. You are playing well and everyone is impressed by your game. You go to make a long putt (on a Pete Dye course or US Open Course) and you miss the hole and the ball keeps on rolling over the edge of the green and into the lake. Your friends laugh at you and the bet you made for who pays for lunch or drinks afterwards is now lost. Now if this was in the US Open, the missed-shot will cost you a lot of money. You will probably lose 2 or more shots total. Last year that mistake would likely cost you first place and almost a million dollars. The prize pool is larger for the 2016 US Open.

Last year's 2015 US Open prize money:

Place Player Payout
1 Jordan Spieth $1.8 million
T2 Louis Oosthuizen $877,144
T2 Dustin Johnson $877,144
T4 Adam Scott $407,037
T4 Cameron Smith $407,037
T4 Branden Grace $407,037

Hard rain overnight means the greens slow down a lot and the scores get better because balls don't roll off the greens as much. Each day the course is set up more difficult, but rain can "soften" the playing conditions. You can see this by the low scores so far. Typically the US Open is designed (set up by the USGA) to have even par the score to win. So far today the scores for the top 20 players including ties are:

It was just plain bad here today! It was very hard to watch any real golf today.
I felt bad for the people who attended.

Only 9 players completed the first round of golf today. Play was halted at 4:30 PM due to lightning. Too many players did not even get to start play today, so I will not update the leader board. The field in the tournament and the leader board can be found at:

Oakmont is a premier course for the US Open so if you love golf don't miss this tournament!!!!

Interesting article on the current leader, with a lot of golf to play today to catch up in the tournament....

Sunday, June 19, 2016
OAKMONT, Pa. – By sinking a long birdie putt on the 18th hole to conclude the third round of the 116th U.S. Open Sunday morning, Andrew Landry played his way into the final pairing of the final round with leader Shane Lowry.
“Who can’t be excited about that?” Landry said after completing 54 holes. “That’s what you always hope for and dream for. Who knows what can happen?”
Since Landry shot a first-round 66 – the best first round in any of the nine U.S. Opens contested at Oakmont Country Club – people have been learning about the 28-year-old Texan who played collegiately at the University of Arkansas. He’s No. 624 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and hasn’t played well in his rookie PGA Tour season. Landry has one Web.com Tour victory, the 2015 Cartagena de Indias at Karibana Championship, after playing mini-tours for several years.
If Landry rallies from a four-stroke deficit and wins the U.S. Open, where would he rank among unexpected major champions?
Since the OWGR was introduced in 1986, the lowest-ranked player by far to win a major is Ben Curtis in the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s. Curtis was No. 396 in the world, well below the 110th spot occupied by Y.E. Yang, of Korea, when he upset Tiger Woods in the 2009 PGA Championship at Hazeltine National.

Shane Lowry collapsed big time! It was hard to watch. He looked out of shape.

Congrats to Dustin Johnson, he seem to always be there in Major Tournaments, and closed this one out with a great round. Shane Lowry showed he had great potential and also a lot to learn, but I think overall he had a great father's day, the kind dreams are made of. Finishing second will give Lowry entry tickets and sponsor exemptions to many future tournaments/majors in the future. He has a great opportunity to capitalize on his accomplishments this week. Jim Furyk, Branden Grace, and Sergio Garcia had great finishing rounds as they attempted to close out the tournament. Jason Day was in the hunt on Sunday, and finished in the top 10. Have a great week all.
