Dave, what do golfers do in the winter to keep their balls from freezing?
Wear long johns?
I live in Southern California, and occasionally in the dead of winter, the greens and fairways get some frost. My balls just collect some frost, but they don't freeze.

Dave ~~ Have you read this?
I thought it was hilarious.

There is no home-course advantage for Donald Trump in this election.
A look at where the GOP’s courses are presents a sobering and very real scenario for the golf enthusiast: Trump may not win a single state where he has a golf course.
Trump has proudly put his name on eighteen different golf properties around the world, twelve of which are in the United States and can be found mainly along the East Coast, along one course located in southern California.
Trump’s twelve courses can be found in six states - New York (3), New Jersey (3), Virginia (1), North Carolina (1), Florida (3) and California (1) - all of which the Republican nominee currently trails Hillary Clinton in the polls.

Have not read this until today. Golf is a non partisan sport. Obama and Bill Clinton play golf. Bill Clinton tried to beat Eisenhower's (a Republican) record of the most rounds of golf played in a year by a sitting President. I don't know if he beat Eisenhower's record. Jack Kennedy was probably the best US Presidential golfer and a Democrat. He hid Golf skills and play because in the 1050's & 60's golf was thought of as an elite rich man's sport, and we all know about Jack's family money. The Bushes include a US Golf Association President, and father, son and grandfather US Senator Bush played and were excellent athletes. Maybe Hillary and The Donald should skip a debate and play a round of golf together. Winner gets bragging right for an athletic/skill win. It takes a lot of stamina to be President and both candidates are near or at 70. We can also see who tries to cheat (the most) as a preview to their Presidency.

Arnie, you will always be the KING of Golf!!! RIP!
It is a sad week in the world of golf. Arnold Palmer, 87, died on Sunday in Pittsburgh, from complications of a heart/cardiovascular procedure. He was one of the greatest golfers ever and loved by all who knew him.
Arnie's legacy and accomplishments include,
He:
* won 7 majors and 95 professional wins
* was followed at tournaments by Arnies' army
* designed over 300 golf courses
* flew his own jet to tournaments
* was in the Coast Guard for three years
* began golf at age 3, taught by his father, a greenkeeper at a golf course in PA
* made golf popular by his play on early television
* was Marc Mccormick's first client at IMG, gaining a fortune in endorsements
* invented the "Arnold Palmer" drink (iced tea and lemonade)
* was married to his first wife for 45 years until she passed away
* never went for the safe shot or fairways and greens
*** played the low percentage shots if they could result in a low score
* was credited for the following quotes
***Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.
***What other people may find in poetry or art museums, I find in the flight of a good drive.
***I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone's golf game: it's called an eraser.
* Jack Nicklaus stole some of this thunder when he joined the tour and was his closest competitor in the 1060's
* was a great businessman
* was a class act who I will miss forever
So let us all raise our Arnold Palmer drinks and toast a great man who had a great life!!

Congrats to team USA.
I heard Jack Nicklaus' comments on the death of his friend for 50 years. He was very sad. There are several generations of golfers and non golfers that are sad to see him go. My two older daughters got his autograph at the Tournament of Champions for the Senior Tour when they were very young golfers. I remembered that Arnie and Jack hung around a long time to give autographs. Younger player of note rushed out and even barked at spectators wanting autographs (like in the Movie Tin Cup). Arnie and Jack knew that the spectators and fans where the ones that put them where they were (along with their tireless practice), and greeting fans was part of their job and obligation. Both men have class, that does not occur simply by the social status of your parents. My father also loved Arnie and Jack and went to PGA Tournaments to see them.

The US Open is starting next week and will end on its traditional Father's Day on June 18th.
Dates: June 12-18
Location: Erin (Hills), Wisconsin. Located 35 miles NW of Milwaukee and 115 miles from Chicago.
Course Description : 7,693 yards(during the Open),the par-72, open to the public.
Erin Hills is a course like none other — routed over the kettle moraine areas left by glaciers, surrounded by wetlands and a river, with ground that consists of glacial till of varied composition of sand and small rock. In an unconventional decision for a course in Wisconsin, the architects used fine fescue for the fairways to emphasize the natural contours of the property and provide a firm-playing surface that plays shorter than it’s length on the scorecard.
The course was designed to accommodate the U.S. Open, in terms of both the challenge to the players and the logistics of the spectators and related support structure. This mix of traditional and modern elements as well as a championship test will leave many golfers with the feeling that they’ve never played anywhere like Erin Hills.

I thought that Mickelson was skipping this event.
You might be correct. I have read conflicting stories about his US Open attendance this year. I read that Phil decided to skip the US Open this year because his daughter will be the valedictorian speaker at her High School Graduation this week in San Diego. I also read he is hoping for a 4 hour rain delay so he can make his afternoon tee time on Thursday. This may be why his tee time is still slotted for him.
My 13 year old daughter, who started golf at age 1, is a member of the First Tee of San Diego. She was at a fundraiser for the First Tee of San Diego this past Saturday at the Hilton overlooking the 18 hole of the south course at Torrey Pines. Charlie Hoffman and his wife were there. Remember Hoffman was the leader at the Masters for the first three days, but lost it starting with a double bogey late in the third round (I think on the 15th hole, and went downhill from there). His Thursday performance at the Masters was characterized by Nick Faldo as the best round of golf he has ever seen at the Masters. Charlie proved his game and game plan can conquer a major championship course, but can he conquer the mental game to close the US Open this year? He is one of the many golfers I will be watching this year anyone entered has a chance to win.
Notice the TBD's on the pairing sheet? Lots of folks waiting for a chance to enter the open. The unknown John Daily won his first major/PGA Championship as a last minute substitution. There may be a player praying for no rain on the first day this year?
Update on the record breaking prize money for the 2017 Us Open
Source http://www.golf.com/tour-news/2017/06/11/us-open-purse-prize-money-payout-breakdown-2017
The golfer who passes the USGA's test of Erin Hills and wins the 2017 U.S. Open will be rewarded with a record-setting paycheck.
The winner of this year's national championship receives a whopping $2.16 million of the $12 million total purse. Both are records for the sport.
Dustin Johnson earned $1.8 million of the $10 million purse for winning the Open at Oakmont last year, but in February the USGA announced it was bumping the purse for 2017 to $12 million.
Sergio Garcia won $1.98 million for winning the Masters in April, which boasted a total purse of $11 million.

Yes, sir, I certainly do: 8 boys & 7 girls -- ages 9-28.
And 5 great grandchildren: 4 boys & 1 girl -- ages 2-6.
All that are old enough have graduated from high school. Oldest grandson is career military since graduation. All graduated ones have gone, or are in, college. I have 3 granddaughters who will graduate 2018 -- and already accepted to college(s) on academic scholarships.
I have been blessed.

WOW! I just looked up the story on: http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news where they have a video of the crash. Fortunately the pilot got out and survived the crash and there were no other passengers. The crash was a half mile from the tournament.

Dave, in answer to your question: that has been the tradition for years -- if I wasn't working on the holiday. I held a career position where I was an essential employee; that responsibility takes prescedence over everything.
Since my retirement I have been chief cook and bottle washer on nearly every holiday.
In the last couple of years I have been training my older granddaughters to take over. Year before last my youngest oldest granddaughter prepared the entire meal while I only instructed and supervised.
This past year my youngest sister and I shared responsibility. She bought all the food and I cooked it.
I guess I am a pretty fair cook. I haven't poisoned anyone, yet.
Edit: I need to correct what I just posted. I did not cook the year my husband and mother died (they died 33 days apart). I was still grieving so I flew to Florida and stayed 2 weeks. That was a rough year.

Ricky Fowler must have switched with a person in the grandstands. His putter has left him
so quickly!
Putting is half the game for most golfers. Putting is the best part of my game and I say that essentially it boils down to technique and confidence. Most golfer have pretty good to great putting fundamentals. Most golfer (even great putters) have mental breakdowns with the putter at times. I had the jips once a long time ago and figured out what caused my jips and how to overcome it. I can explain more on this some day if you or other readers are interested.
There is four way tie at -7 at the start of Saturday's play, by:
Paul Casey
Brian Harman
Tommy Fleetwood
Brooks Koepka
Why is it so hard to follow a tremendous round with even just a good round? The same seems to hold true for winning a first major. For most new major winners, there is a period of no so great tournament golf. Right now Ricky is just one off the lead (-6), so he is still in the tournament. This is exactly what happened (so far)with Charlie Hoffman (-4)at the Masters this year. Both Ricky and Charlie are local golfers to where I live and are strong supporters of the First Tee of San Diego, that my youngest is a member. I am rooting for both of them to win or at least have a top 10 finish.
Today is moving day, and the following notables did not make the cut this year:
Justin Rose
Davis Love III
Adam Scott
Bubba Watson
Duston Johnson
Rory Mcllroy
Graeme McDowell
Angel Cabrera
Jason Dufner
Gene Sauers
Jason Day
Good luck to all the golfers that have made the cut! One of them will have an exceptional Father's Day!!!

I heard that the blimp there caught fire and crashed!
I heard the same, silly! Too close for comfort. Didn't two or three people die, but the pilot survived and was rushed to a hospital?
Last I heard Ricky Fowler was doing very well.

i have to admit, i kinda lost a lil interest when the guys in the hunt are newbies, ok sort of newbies. the young guns of the last 2-3 years struggle with consistency. oh well, changing of the guard may be a little more bumpy than expected.

I felt the same way. Just when you get to like and root for the "new guard" a relative unknown wins. It has been said that the US Open is the most Democratic of the Majors. This is because you can play your way into the tournament. This is not true of the of the other majors. This also makes it more exciting, like Rocky Balboa fighting the champ!!! 10 of the last 13 US Opens were won by a first time winner. Congrats to Brooks Koepka who tied the record low total score ever in a US Open (16 tied with_Rory McIlroy). Brooks Koepka is unknown to most Yankees because he worked his way on the the US tour by first working his way on the European Tour. He grew up in Florida and played for Florida State. He has been in the majors for that past 5 years and has done well. This is his second PGA win.
A funny story unfolded as we learned that he is 28 year old and single. Brooks Koepka's girlfriend was at the tournament and announced as his previous girlfriend on TV. His current girlfriend, Jena Sims, stared in the "Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader" The big question is did she make the blimp crash?
Congrats to Brooks, the UDGA, all the players, volunteers, staff, and the creators of this great test of golf that is open to the public!!!!! It is a good thing Brooks won $2.16 million for first place because dinner for a 50 foot cheerleader can get very expensive. That's a lot of salad.

Tiger dropped out of Stanford after his second year, so I think he was 20. Did Speith finish college first (age 22?) when he started his career? If so his win record adjusted for Pro start age is actually better?
Tiger's last win was 2013? Is it over for Tiger? He is one of the most tenacious (never quits) golfer I have ever seen, so I don't count him out. Right now he is not in the top 500 in the world. His current Official World Ranking is 957. If he ever came back and was leading a major on a Sunday, it would probably draw the largest world Television viewage ever (above the walk on the moon in 69).

Cup,
You are correct. Tiger did go to rehab for drug addiction (Vicodin,Xanax), and I assume he is still there? A good article about his rehab and reasons for going are in the follwing URL:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/06/13/tiger-woods-checks-rehab-addiction-prescription-painkillers/
Silly:
Yes. The Senior US Open is lead by Kirk Triplett who shot a 62 today, tying the Senior US Open record. More information is at:
http://www.golfchannel.com/news/associated-press/tripletts-record-tying-62-leads-us-senior-open/
If you ever get to go to a Senior Tour event or a LPGA event, you will enjoy it more than a Men's PGA event. The crowds are smaller so you get to be close up to the players, the prices are less, and the parking and traffic is much less. I went to a US Senior Open at the Riveria Club in LA and really enjoyed it. I have been to a dozen US Women's Majors (3 golfing daughters) at Mission Hills GC in the Palm Springs area (Rancho Mirage) The ANA Inspirations/former Dinah Shore-Nabisco Tournament.

Tater:
There are a lot of great golfers on the PGA Tour and it is very difficult to dominate the tour. This is one reason why Tiger was so popular. He dominated the tour at a young age. I think I said this before, remember Tiger and Phil started golf when they were one year old. Jack Nicholas played his first round of golf at age 10. Today parents start their children on golf as soon as they can stand/walk. By age ten they would dominate Jack Nicholas if they traveled in a time machine at age ten and play the young golden bear when he was 10. There are also many more golfers starting at a young age today because of the skyrocketing prize money to be made with Televised tournaments and sponsor endorsements. When Jack was young and starting out, professional bowlers made more than professional gofers. How many folks can name one professional bowler today?

Silly,
Yes. "The Open" Starts on July 20th and is at Royal Birkdale. The last time the Open was at Royal Birkdale was in 2008. Judging from the scores at the last British Open (for us Yanks), as the Irish would say, "the course is a wee bit difficult." The winner was +3 and second place was +7, and 9 players were tied for 7th place at +12. Note that a first time winner won the Open the last 7 Opens. Could our US Open winner this year be a fist time winner at the British Open?.....did he get to know the course will on the European Tour? That would cause a lot of excitement in the golfing world.
