The guy on second is already in scoring position, if a batter gets a hit. Why risk being thrown out? Does the neglible potential reward justify the risk?

There are so many ways to score from third without a hit, though. I'd say only do it when you are miiiiiighty sure you will succeed, though. Because otherwise yes being in scoring position is better than being too risky.

If you had been fortunate enough to play the game professionally, which I was fortunate enough to be able to do, you would understand why there are many reasons to steal third and particularly with one out or less on the team hitting. Of course there are many strategies that must be in place for the team hitting to attempt this move. Just to name a few: What is the current score in the game? What kind of speed does the runner on second have? What kind of pick off move does the pitcher have? Where are the third baseman, shortstop, and second baseman positioned in order to give the runner on second the biggest lead possible before the pitch? What kind of pitch is expected with the current count on the hitter? Yes, there are a lot of strategies involved to determine if this is a risky move or not.

But Sorp, could you steal second or third right now? You wouldn't have to with that Babe Ruth power that you have at the plate since you would be able to trot around both bases.

If you attempt to steal 3rd you need to be safe 90% of the time and that is asking a lot.

Why stealing 3rd base is usually easier than stealing 2nd base
First of all, the pitcher usually has slower times to home plate when there is a runner at 2nd compared to a runner at 1st.
Your lead is usually a little bigger at 2nd than at first base.
You are most likely not stealing from a dead stand still, you usually have some momentum going before you steal third base, allowing you to get to top speed quicker.
Usually middle infielders aren’t very comfortable or proficient at holding runners close to 2nd base.

You sound like a man who has been involved in the game during your lifetime. I couldn't have made your well said case any better. I'll just add that very few pitchers can hold a very good runner close to second base before delivering his pitch which means the base runner only has to steal a short distance between second and third.

Yet another astute observation, enard. Yes, you have once again proven yourself to be a godsend.

If your at 3rd with less than two outs you don't need a hit to score, a sac fly or a pitch in the dirt will get you home and dudes on 3rd makes pitchers nervous which is an advantage in itself. Keep the pressure on, force mistakes and win ball games. I wish the mets and reds would learn that
