OP - Start by incorporating as a 501(c)3 organization. Get some of the forms, and details, from the IRS, and have an attorney who specializes in tax exempt corporations help you. Be prepared to be regularly audited by the IRS, and be sure to do background checks on yourselves, and your board members, contributors, etc, to prove to the world that none of you are ISIS terrorists posing as Humanitarians. Then, be ready to spend 80% of your non-sleeping hours writing letters, making public speeches, etc, begging for money...from ordinary citizens, and from other tax exempt organizations such as churches, The Red Cross, etc. Have professional CPAs detail what comes in, and what goes out, and be sure to not spend any of your organization's money on anything that can be construed as being of personal benefit to you, board members, contributors, etc. Let there be no buying of 6 foot paintings of yourself to hang in your home. Do not rent offices from yourself. Look at everything that Donald Trump does with his Foundation...and then do the exact opposite with your organization. When you get that far, let us know.
