I stopped in one of our fine local establishments this morning for coffee. I overheard the following conversation between two young men. (Paraphrase)

Guy 1: What you doing up this early man?

Guy 2: Gotta run my girl down to work she doesn't want to ride bus

Guy 1: Did you work last night

Guy 2: No, That's why I'm up. She know, that's why she got me driving her around. She better give me some gas money or something...

Okay, so topic is last statement. A couple of questions, answer what you feel like being honest about.

1. How does that statement make you feel?

2. Ever been in that relationship?

3. What other quid pro quo have you been part of?

4. Does that relationship have good odds for a good long term outcome?

As always, be honest, have fun. Name callers and trolls will be blocked on first offense (on my judgement). It is time for the adults to have a good dating related/relationship discussion.

Answering question #1

It makes me feel like he's a young man. I bet he was tired and doing the "guy talk thing"! Could be wrong. Now if it was his wife, I'd wanna bop him upside the head!

1) well...it could be he didn't work that night...because it was a night off, and he does usually work...but yes, a lame statement...but maybe his check is due on Friday...and he's out of cash....who knows?

2) no...I'm not in the habit of dating men.

3) I think I've expressed on here some of the lame women I've been with...no point in rehashing that again...lol

4) who knows? not enough info...and young guys will talk one way to a friend, yet treat her differently and just want to appear the man...to their buddies.

^^^^^^^^^^I would assume since they were buddies, if the one asked, did he work last night?

That statement would be derived from knowing that he does work. If he knew he didn't work...then he wouldn't have asked that question.

as for the rest who knows?

Maybe he gets paid on Friday like most people and in this poor economy, like most...the money is gone before the next pay day.

For me...I'd need a lot more than this...to predict anyone's future or relation..and, things like this...these days can happen in the hood, or a rich white neighborhood.

Indifferent

2. Ever been in that relationship?

A casual relationship? sure

3. What other quid pro quo have you been part of?

Isn't every relationship give and take?...all of them

4. Does that relationship have good odds for a good long term outcome?

I'd say so, having clearly defined lines in the sand is a good thing.

For all we know he's only been dating her 2 or 3 weeks.

It's best not to assume anything based on a tiny bit of information.

1. How does that statement make you feel? Irritated. Irritated by the guy's comment of she better give me some gas money, not by the statement of the woman knowing that the guy is home and since she doesn't want to take the bus has him driving her around.

2. Ever been in that relationship? Only once, but I was 15 and he was 18 and had hardly any money for gas.

3. What other quid pro quo have you been part of? I can't think of any time I was.

4. Does that relationship have good odds for a good long term outcome? I don't think so. Unless the guy is really broke for some reason he should want the comfort of his partner (by not having to take the bus).

She probably knew he wasn't working the night before because he was at her house eating up all the groceries.
He probably didn't want to admit he was doing something for someone beside himself. Which is retarded. My dad was proud of the things he did for my mom.

Thanks folks....

If we leave the emotions out of it; it is useful to understand the law of Economics that [All] relationships are transactional. This is not a negative thing- it's just a fact.

What struck me about this conversation- and prompted me to make a thread was it had been a while since I had heard that explicit of a comment about the give and take that does go on.

There are a lot of unknowns regarding the gas money...maybe he's broke and can barely afford to get himself to work let alone someone else too.

Maybe as mentioned they've only been dating a short time and it's reasonable therefore he doesn't want to be her taxi cab..at his expense etc.

Maybe she's a bit of a moocher and he knows that...has him drive her all over the place and then spends the money she's saved at "der clurb" while he's struggling to keep his head above water etc.

...again it's best not to assume you have a picture of the relationship based on a tiny tiny portion of information.

I was just asking some "academic" questions to prime conversation. I haven't drawn a judgement of my own yet.

My knee jerk thought is that I don't think they have a bright future...I heard contempt in his voice (even if just fronting for his boy) and that is the number one killer of relationships.

Barry, in all truth...its hard to say.

The streets tells me he is a loser....but...reality says...who knows?

Not enough info...and its just speculation on how he meant things...or does he work or not.

and with a thread like this some people are more prone to answer by experiences...and not unbiased rationality.

The same thing that happens when they lynch someone without proper foundation.

Of course they are...being judgemental about situations and people keeps you alive...you make hundreds of judgment calls a say

"is it safe to cross this road"
"If I put this foot in front of the other will I be able to maintain my balance and move forward?"
"Should I avoid this naked black man wielding a knife and running at me ..or maybe he just want's to be a friend and cut the crusts off my sandwich for me?"

As for compassion...out of the 7 billion people on the planet I care about maybe..30 at most...perhaps a slight interest in a further 20 or so...after that they are all on their own.

Hmmm...

Standard thinking pretty much...as I see it.

Just like after a few dates..many men think it is time to Netflix..chill and hv her cook for him...

And she does it...

Or sex inside a dating situation all while they call other women wh*res...

Or the expectation of wifey behavior without making her his..wife.

All of this is set up by....women.

Men will push to see how much they can get...nature of the beast ? Challenge ?

Who knows...regardless..it's the women who set it in play...allow it.

This is pretty standard from what I hv seen...many expect "something" for everything they do...

Could be another reason the guy wanted to charge her for gas in this instance...if she's homely that extra weight in the vehicle = higher gas consumption.

That might be an incentive for her to lose weight...so he's actually helping her out long term.

????? What's wrong with chilling and cooking for the guy after a few dates? I don't think we can expect him to wine and dine us forever. Then things just naturally progress to the homestead where things are more comfortable and more of the pressure is off.

I don't understand what's wrong with doing things for the guy. You're really coming down hard on women in this post.

This.

Clearly he has a job or the friend wouldn't have known to ask.

It would also appear that the girlfriend is somewhat respectful of that because it is implied that she would not have asked him to run her around if he had worked the night before.

The gas comment could be anything from..'he is on a tight budget that doesn't bend so easily' to 'guy talk' or even 'he's a user'. We don't know, so I won't judge.

All relationships involve give and take.

Insufficient data to hazard a guess at the future for this couple.

Well as someone else noted it wasn't actually apparent if they spent the night together, the fact he was out of the house and said he was going to take her to work suggests they did not in fact spend the night together..or she'd be with him already.

...unless he was being extra thoughtful and popped out for coffee and donuts for her too...
