Real is all well and good, but the pine needles are a pain in the ass...literally if you sit on the floor to open your presents.

I don't see the point in killing a real tree just for decoration. Plus you don't throw away a fake tree where a real one you have to rebuy every year (that's more money that can go to gifts or Christmas dinner). You just store the fake for the next year and mine is prelit so I save time and stress not having to string lights.
But that's just my own little way of looking at it.

do you realize that a tree is renewable, that these trees are farmed for this purpose? did you know that for every tree that is cut down at least one more is planted to replace it? do you know how those fake trees are made? hint, plastics. do you know how plastics are made? hint; from crude oils.
do you know that the majority of live trees sold in the US are grown in the US with the balance coming from canada? do you know where those fake trees are made? hint; china. how do you think those trees get here from china? hint; via ships. do you know how are those ships powered? hit; oil!

I think most tree farmers plant two to three for every one cut down. The tree industry employs thousands and thousands of people throughout the year, not just during Christmas.
I like to pat myself on the back for doing the responsible, civic-minded, sustainable, and tree-huggy tree buying thing  but it really boils down to I like them better. I like the smell. I like decorating them. I like the way they look.
When my husband was alive (he loved Christmas) we had a tree in the living room, dining room, and family room. Some of the bedrooms, too, if we were having company over the holidays. The one in the family room was real, the rest were fake. From table-top to ceiling.
Now, I just do the one. Real.

I just bought a Colorado Blue Spruce, in a pot (3 gallon), for my tree. When Christmas is over I will eventually plant it in my yard. Then, I'll decorate it in the yard every year.
I use LEDs, lasers and lots of shiny stuff to reflect all that light.

The one I put up last year was in a cat fight. Her ornaments were crushed during the chaos.

during about 4 years of having a real tree, one of our cats would climb about 5 ft up and sit on the branches close to the trunk, behind the ornaments 
then she got too big

Fake. I had a real one once, got tired of cleaning up after it. I wasn't impressed.
Maybe because I always forgot to keep it watered like it needed.

I have a 3 ft pre lit fake tree. The closest it comes to getting put up for Christmas is I pull the box out of the closet, let it sit on the floor for a couple months and when I go back up-stairs I push it back in

Since middle school, our family always went to a farm and cut down our tree every year on Thanksgiving day while the turkey was in the oven. Used to do it myself until about 10 years ago. Haven't had one since.

Real...used to take the kids out and
pick out one cut it down ourselves. .
drag through the snow put it in the truck....swear putting it up cuz it wasn't straight in stand....drink a few beers. .put cardboard under one leg of stand. .go to bed..wake up in the morning. .Damn cat knocked over tree...

I love the smell of fresh cut tree's but too much hassle to get straight in the stand, keep watered etc. so I have a small 4 ft. pre lit artificial one .. That works for me..

I'm not putting one up, but back when my son was little I'd get a live tree.. After Christmas we'd plant it in the yard.. Back breaking work bringin it in and out of the house, but worth it to watch it grow over the years..
