Thanks, I like to think people enjoy reading about some real life stuff from time to time and I do enjoy sharing the photos to be honest.
Recently I caught a family of raccoons in my attic... I knew I had at least one up there and I ended up catching it in a cage only to have it drag the cage over to my internet cable and pull it 20 foot out of the ground and chew it to bits! I was going to put her down but she was never aggressive or hissed at me, so I took her out to a local park and set her free.
Two days later I got up in the attic to run new RG6 cable (coax) for the internet and this family of 4 raccoon babies stated to converge on me! No joke! LOL! It was like something out of a scary movie as I had 4 sets of reflective beaty eyes off in the distance with them slowly moving towards me in a cramped attic! Once they got closer I could tell they were baby raccoons but they were making this odd purring sound that almost sounded like gremlins! It was quit shocking really, and as I tried to tell them to stay back they kept advancing toward me almost as if to imply I was their new momma or something! LOL, once I had the kid bring the cage up to the attic and they seen I had reinforcements they started to retreat into a crevice in the roof's edge... It was tricky getting them out, but with a little teamwork we managed to get all 4 of them in the cage!

This is what the momma did to my network cable! But it's okay because I had purchased 500 foot of Cat5e cable and then also 500 foot of RG6 cable (coax) to wire up both my houses with the new 15 camera closes circuit survalence cameras and needed to do it anyway. I ran over 1000 foot of cable and had been putting it off for the longest time and this is why I ended up letting her go at the part rather than ending her, even though she had chewed thru my 100 foot cable I was using temporarily.
Here are all the supplies I purchased and the cable I run to keep the new lines off the ground. The Cat 5e cable as some of you may recall was purchased two Christmas ago when I was building my kids computer but never got around to installing it. Now it's all installed and I just have to get the camera's all set up and wired up to the closed network computer and from there to my old Sony 60 inch projection TV so I can watch them all at once. Anyway, as I got up into the attic thats when they converged on me, then retreated into the corner once I got the cage.
So now I am stuck with these 4 baby raccoons having to feed them with a bottle and trying to get them to eat solid food, which basically amounts to stuff I pull out of the trash can (lol) and my dogs food so that eventually I can let them go. Never mind the fact that there is a 32% chance that they have rabies and I have to be extra careful not to get bit or scratched by them! It's actually more work than what I had in mind but at least I made progress with the wiring and almost have my closed captioned 15 camera surveillance system working at both houses.

I have made it impossible for the momma to get back into the attic as I caught her getting in there one day and took a photo.
I had no idea she had kids up there, which may explain why she was so desperate to get out of the cage originally... But the funny thing is, I took her about 3 miles away to a park and then found these by where I keep my garbage cans yesterday!
So it would seem either there is another one, or she is back! I wish I could confirm it so then I could just wait and catch her again and then let the whole family go together much further away! It sure would be a whole lot less work than trying to bring up 4 baby raccoons to the point they can eat solid food to let them go...
So anyway... That's my little "story", not that Sammy would have been interested! LOL

Closed captioned basically means that it's not connected to the internet in any way, rather a private network... They are very old actually and they used to record onto VHS cassette recorders, now days the kits are VERY inexpensive and they record to a mass storage drive so it's really easy and you don't have to switch tapes all the time.
It's actually pretty simple if you have an extra TV, Computer and a few hundred dollars to buy the camera kit which comes with the software. They even sell some that work off WiFi but I like the idea of everything being hard wired better. Trying to figure out redundant battery backups and wifi redundancy in the event the coons ever attack the cables again.
Check it out online, not a big deal. Pretty old school tech too.

I am trying to catch her again to do just that! My gawd would that be nice for her to take care of them instead of me! Once I catch her again I can compare photos and see if its her... If it looks like the same coon I'll take them all about 10 miles out and let them go together. Kind of bummed me out I let her go 3 miles away before I realized she had little ones... Been kicking myself every since, trust me... it's been a fair amount of work... These little suckers get real loud when they get hungry.

Cool story. This reminds me of my skunk invasion. I was driving my ATV down a narrow pasture road and ran up on about 6 baby skunks. I rebbed my motor in hopes they would get out of the road. Instead they all started running towards me..I had to floor it in reverse, turn around and peel out as this hoard of skunks were running after me...funny stuff.
Hey watch them things they are mean and tough when they want to be. We used to feed them leftovers on camping trips...

Sometimes I will leave for work at like 3 in the morning and they will be cruising along the fence.
I try to stay clear of them.

Amazing enough, it didn't appear that they chewed any wires in the attic which I found quite amazing! Of course had they chewed a 120 wire up there that probably would have been the end of the road when they got poked with 120 volts and a minimum of 20 amps! Still, they could have caused a fire! That reminds me, I better check the fire alarms next! LOL
I am also planing on getting rid of all the old insulation this month too while the weather is still cool and putting down new stuff, also going to clean up the ducts too because I just gives me the creeps knowing these suckers been up there so long! I know they must have taken a crap and p1ss up there somewhere but I couldn't find any! Still, not taking a chance!
Insurance company cashed me out real nice from that storm that knocked the power out for a week because it tore up my roof, so I have lots left over after repairs to buy new insulation. I'll be able to better inspect the wires then also.

Ill have to keep that in mind because I been looking for a summer retreat up north Michigan and they have lots of trails and such. Haven't really purchased any dirt bikes or 4 wheelers because we pretty much been city dwellers here in the township and they really frown on that stuff. As a kid I was always up north riding dirt bikes, 3 and 4 wheelers, snowmobiles and boating, want the kids to have that too but it makes no sense unless you got a place to use them and store them. I've been looking around the Higgins Lake area, which is my favorite area. One of the cleanest big lakes in Michigan if you're ever out this way it's worth a visit! They have a North and South State park you can camp but you'll usually find me in the South park because thats where I always was as a kid.
Insurance company cashed me out real nice from that storm that knocked the power out for a week because it tore up my roof, so I have lots left over after repairs to buy new insulation. I'll be able to better inspect the wires then also.
I should also mention to everyone that had to listen to me whine for a week while the power was out that DTE did eventually make good on their word to cut down them 5 tree's! I had to stay on them, but sure enough they got a tree crew out here by the name of Davey to cut them all down! One of them was nearly an 80 foot tall Siberian Elm!
I got so much wood now I'll have to rent a wood splitter just to get it all split in time for the winter! Hoping it will dry in time being split as this should allow it to dry a little quicker. It was a massive tree and some parts towards the bottom have big enough chunks that you could make a few coffee tables out of a solid chunk if you were able to sand it down flat!

Most definitely.
The wires were the first thing that caught my eye in that attic picture.
I think for the most part they know better than to chew live wires, but I am sure it has happened before.
I would inspect every inch of all that Romex wire in your attic.
As far as insulation and sealing any gaps or holes goes, there is all kinds of new stuff available to do a great job.
That storm you had that caused those problems seem to be a blessing (s) in disguise.
You will be well learned concerning raccoons before it is all over.

I bought my Honda with 36000 on it back in 2003, now has 195000 on it, and I couldn't have been happier, saved 8000 off the new price then.
Now I am looking at a Honda Accord EX L and it looks like used with 18000 miles on it, I will save 10000 bucks on the price of a new one. Certified bumper to bumper warranty.

Baby skunks can't spray.
Adult skunks will ONLY spray as a LAST resort. Because they are defenseless for a time after spraying.
I used to have wild skunks here that ate with my cats. When I poured out the cat food and said "here kitty, kitty kitty" the skunks would come running. They were within just a couple feet of me on numerous occasions.

You are WRONG again. "Wild animals accounted for 92.6% of reported cases of rabies in 2014. Raccoons continued to be the most frequently reported rabid wildlife species (30.2% of all animal cases during 2014), followed by bats (29.1%), skunks (26.3%), and foxes (5.2%).

PS There are only 3 cases of human rabies per year. Out of 325 million people, your chances of catching it are not very high.
Sort of like winning the lottery.

Baby skunks can't spray.
Adult skunks will ONLY spray as a LAST resort. Because they are defenseless for a time after spraying.
I used to have wild skunks here that ate with my cats. When I poured out the cat food and said "here kitty, kitty kitty" the skunks would come running. They were within just a couple feet of me on numerous occasions.
They are harmless unless you threaten them.
That's the truth.
However, I've seen a baby skunk who was startled after stumbling across me ATTEMPT to spray me. he turned around all fast and his tail went up in the air. All of a sudden he fell over on his side with his back arched and his little legs stiff. He stayed that way for a couple seconds and then scrambled back on his feet. Got back into his stance pointing at me, and fell over on his side again. I was laughing so hard. He stood up again and scurried away. I really hope I didn't scar him emotionally with my laughter.

LOL..In ranching we run into them in pastures. Its like a video game...spot the tall or risk a stink shower..
Reminds me of those fainting goats...what a natural survival flaw..
