"Workers removed another high-profile Confederate monument in New Orleans Tuesday night, lifting a statue of Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard on horseback from its spot at the entrance of City Park. One more statue remains to be taken down, of Gen. Robert E. Lee."
"Crews have now taken three statues down — the first two were monuments to Jefferson Davis and a Reconstruction-era clash. Officials say safety concerns are the reason all of the work so far has been carried out in darkness. Contractors performing the work have covered identifying marks on their equipment."
"While we must honor our history, we will not allow the Confederacy to be put on a pedestal in the heart of New Orleans," Landrieu said as the latest statue was being removed. "As we near our City's 300th anniversary, we must continue to find courage to stand up to hate and embrace justice and compassion."
"While the goal of the removal process is unity, for now at least, it's highlighting divisions in New Orleans. The plan to take down high-profile post-Civil War monuments has sparked legal challenges and demonstrations, both in favor and against the monuments."
Do you really think that unity can become a reality by removing or erasing pieces of history?...Apparently part of the reasoning for the removal is because Dylan Roof had the rebel flag in some of his pics and the other part is because black people equate these symbols to slavery...discuss....

I really don't get it...so the way to unity is to erase all existence of history around the civil war time period....slavery happened...you cant pretend it didn't...you cant erase it...and although slavery existed during that time period...it wasn't the reason for the civil war....so I don't get how it can be a symbol of slavery....as for the Dylan roof thing...are we gonna remove all things that killers might have in their pictures because now it becomes a symbol of murder?....

Mornin eyes....I think we got to this point by a lot more than name calling although that was a part of it....I just really don't see how that equates to the civil war....
So if I am offended by all war...does that mean that I can petition to have every war memorial in my province or country removed so I can pretend those wars didn't really happen and no war will ever happen again?....

I don't know...they've removed statues of Stalin and Lenin, etc., in former Eastern Bloc countries. How is this any different? Should they have been left in place just because once they were part of history--a brutal regime history?
I mean, I don't know if I've got an opinion about it yet, but I'm not sure I think it's wrong.

Gotta say this, for this council being predominantly African American, they are about the most retarded and ignorant council of people ever to live outside the founding fathers of America!!
These people are so stupid they are literally causing people to split off into groups (segregating).
I thought the attempt at removing these statues was to bring people together.
Goes to show ya just how IGNORANT the people of NEW ORLEANS really are.
let em all perish. be a better place without em!!

Z...I hear ya...but healing doesn't come from the removal of a few statues...healing is personal...but systemically it comes from a positive change in attitude based on learning from ones mistakes...

And Op...I am not a fan of glorifying the Civil War...
And I am a southerner...the war not started to free the slaves but it was about the money ..as usual.
In my opinion the Confederate flag is the biggest offenseive object and shld not fly on any public ground nor building.
Privately? Do you...
The Civil war has sht to do with the situation we find ourselves in...ignorance...weakness and hate is what we find ourselves in..and a pied piper to all those who suffer from the above.

I hate racism and ignorance and the removing of these statues by African Americans will seem racist to the whites of New Orleans.
How can you be a leader of people and not understand the simplicity and basics of governing people?
that part of the world needs to fall off into the Gulf for being STUPID and becoming a harmful threat to the rest of the United States!!

I agree iam...I don't like it either and I see the removal of these statues as something very superficial that changes nothing...and whose rights supercedes whose in this case or are there any?...

the Civil War happened because the SOUTH wanted the USA to be a split country of countries. And Lincoln told the ignorant inbreds he was going to bend em over, make the USA 1 nation, and all people equally free!!
The inbreds took offence so us in the North slaughtered em
And now the African Americans are erasing what Lincoln did.
at this point, I cannot tell who is the most ignorant between the inbred white slave owners or the leaders today with no common sense to even wipe their own ass!!

No hun..it was started over Taxation without representation...
And it was about succeeding from the Union which had been in planning stages for sometime prior to the actual war.

No..that was already in the planning stages..had been for quite some time. The South saw no need to be part of the Union...they were self sufficient and reliant...as they saw it. They had more natural resources...slave labor and were making shtloads of $$$. The top movers and shakers wanted to break from the Union and keep their cash..simple. Or so they thought.
The taxation issue was their "door" to do so..and to get tge ones hesitating to jump on board.

I think the real history needs to be shared.....I for one would be totally offended if they tried to erase what happened to the Indians...wait they did try to do that...but guess what..it all came out and out of sight was never out of mind because their will always be reprucussions that don't come from a statue or a history book....that's why I say it's a very shallow action that does no good in the end....

Flirty, how do you feel about the Gen. George Armstrong Custer statue?
George Armstrong Custer Equestrian Monument
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Location
Junction of Elm Avenue and North Monroe Street
Monroe, Michigan
The George Armstrong Custer Equestrian Monument, also known as Sighting the Enemy,[4][5] is an equestrian statue of General George Armstrong Custer by Edward Clark Potter, located in Monroe, Michigan. The statue was unveiled on June 4, 1910 by President William Howard Taft and the widowed Elizabeth Custer. It was designated as a Michigan Historic Site on June 15, 1992[3] and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 9, 1994.[1]
While Custer was not born in Monroe, he lived much of his early childhood there with relatives and attended the schools in Monroe. During his youth, he met his future wife Elizabeth Bacon, whom he returned to marry in 1864. Custer left Monroe to attend the United States Military Academy and fight in the Civil War. Because of his hard work and success during the war?—?as well as the Union's need for officers?—?he was promoted to the rank of Major General and became a very well-known military figure. After the Civil War, he fought in the Indian Wars in the West. His previous accomplishments in the Civil War, however, were overshadowed by his catastrophic defeat and death at the Battle of the Little Big Horn on June 25, 1876.[6]
To honor him, a $24,000, 14-foot (4.27 m) bronze equestrian statue, sculpted by Edward Clark Potter, was unveiled in Monroe in 1910 by President William Howard Taft and the widowed Elizabeth Bacon Custer.[2] The statue commemorates his successful actions during the Civil War and not his more well-known defeat in 1876.[7

I have a lot of reminders and things that trigger me...but guess what..i cant get rid of them...nor do I want to...that's called avoidance and those triggers and reminders are what actually do heal me...as painful as that might be sometimes...to me the optimum would have been for people to just get to a place where they can see these statutes as just that...statues...that simply represent a historical period in time...with no other meaning attached than just that...

The burning of the library....if I remember my history correctly wasn't done because of complaints by "whiny f**ks".
Really? The bonfire of the vanities? Burning books and mirrors?
Anyway, I don't think they're being destroyed. They're just being removed.
So do you think the removal of statues of any presidents during the whole slavery period should be done as well?...after all they were the ones who instituted slavery in the first place...not the civil war...
...:
No, I don't, and your question is too simplistic. The Civil War was not about slavery, it was about money and the economy slavery fostered.
Slavery, also, wasn't instituted by any president, and in fact, was not a Federal law but laws left to the States to determine if they'd be a Free State or a Slave State. State's Rights and all that...
I think the point is is if atrocities are committed in the name of something, be it an ideal or a government, or whatever, it should not be glorified nor still revered long after it's over.

To honor him, a $24,000, 14-foot (4.27 m) bronze equestrian statue, sculpted by Edward Clark Potter, was unveiled in Monroe in 1910 by President William Howard Taft and the widowed Elizabeth Bacon Custer.[2] The statue commemorates his successful actions during the Civil War and not his more well-known defeat in 1876.[7
I don't care...its just a statue to me that represents something real that happened during a period of history...me not liking it isn't gonna take away the fact that it happened....that's what I am trying to say...the absence of a statue doesn't take away the historical facts....

I don't agree. And I don't think they're "whiny f**ks".
The burning of the library....if I remember my history correctly wasn't done because of complaints by "whiny f**ks".
Well no one knows the cause actually...It was more as a example of great loss.
Really? The bonfire of the vanities? Burning books and mirrors?
Yes and art/music etc.
Anyway, I don't think they're being destroyed. They're just being removed.
...same thing from the public's perspective. Millions of tourists a year will no longer be able to see it...some of which I'm sure further researched the history behind it after seeing it. I'd be surprised if they keep the statues intact for very long.

if every president had a library made in his honor or some monument, should the presidents who owned slaves have theirs removed from them?
If we remove statues then we should remove anything honoring presidents who condoned and owned slaves themselves!!

But...your initial feelings to the existence of the Custer statue should give you a better "walking a mile in their shoes" perception of blacks feelings toward Confederate Civil War monuments.

Lake..yeah I get it now...I think we glorify history all the time...just in different ways....through books...museums etc....statues or not...you cant change history....
what initial feelings?...I have never had any feeling one way or another about a statue....custard or otherwise...I see it for what it is...an inanimate object....

Thomas Jefferson: should anything about him be removed since he did in fact own slaves and condoned slave ownership?

should we remove anything about Bill Clinton because he said, he admired and idolized Thomas Jefferson?
since we know Thomas Jefferson owned slaves while being a president and condoned slave ownership?

Look at all of the presidents BEFORE Lincoln who owned slaves.

Every race in the world has at some point been in bondage/slavery...get over it...everyone else has.
My people were enslaved by the Romans...I don't get bent out of shape if I see a roman statue or building.
