Sparky is likely correct. It is paid up for the current billing cycle. Of course, the guy could continue paying it each month, but I wouldn't bet on it.
You'll have to get a new contract, but you won't have to pay the connection fee.

One way or another, your cable will be shut off. Whether by his choice or yours. I haven't lived in an area that's offered cable in decades. Would it be cheaper to have his disconnected or just switched into your name if you want it? Is it even possible? Are cable boxes even used anymore?
If it can't be switched over and he was a complete turd of a boyfriend and left owing you rent money or utility bills, just go ahead and enjoy it along with some premium channels and pay-per-view movies and heavyweight champion boxing matches etc until it's gone.

1. He forgot.

I think you are "over thinking" this.
I think simply, you split up, he left and didn't disconnect the cable, so that you wouldn't have to go without T.V....while getting everything transferred to your name.
It shows compassion and perhaps too much trust, because some people would order everything available and rack up a huge three month behind bill...then dump that on him, then change it over to their own name.
The first girlfriend I had after my divorce who moved in with me after a while, we split the bills and names on them and when we split up and she moved out, she left her part in her name...but unfortunately she was behind on her part...which meant I had to pay that to keep my electricity on... I did that and transferred everything back to my name only.
The "right thing" for you to do is have him cancel his name on it, and get it put back into your name....instead of trying to find secret reasons that don't exist to why he did this.

I have let know that the bill is in his name still.
