I run Norton anti-virus protect. A red screen appeared on my computer yesterday when my granddaughter hit youtube when searching for it. It took her to this red screen with a warning that my computer had a virus and I should call an 888 number. I don't remember the rest of the number, but there was also a warning. It said I had a Trojan virus and it would steal my passwords, bank account stuff etc, . . It was supposedly a google security warning. I immediately turned off my computer when she yelled for me and when turning it back on (it came on normally) I ran a full scan by Norton with no problems located on my computer.
Do any of you reading this think then this was a scam to get me to call them then and give out information? Anyone ever hear of this or can help me on this? Thanks

It was definitely a scam.
A few years back someone had registered the domain "goggle.com" to phish people misspelling "google", so in your instance your daughter probably misstyped youtube or clicked a blind link (a link that says one thing but takes you somewhere else) and took you to a similar website.
Make sure your antivirus is up to date, also might want to check out several of the online free services. I used to use pc-cillin but haven't in a long time.
Malwarebytes a couple of years ago was rated top of it's class by just about everyone, it has a free version, and is cheap for one year sub. If you're paranoid that your current setup is vulnerable, Malwarebytes, well a couple of years ago, couldn't be beaten. I still use it, but I've been so happy with it that I've not bothered to see how it compares to anything else.

It was a scam, purely to call them, but you were lucky that it was fairly amateur.
You should use add blocker plus and uBlock Origin for your browser (I use firefox as it is preferable) that stops dangerous scams and pop ups from harassing you.
These are add ons to your browser to add protection and help filter unwanted pop ups before they are an issue.
For scanning and removal of viruses once I have been infected I have Malwarebytes and
for real time scanning I have Avira, I also have Spybot Search and destroy 2.4
Of course I update them when I scan though and think I am at risk.
The important thing is always be sure and check what you are downloading, the downloads are the dangerous things. They are the things that will and can destroy everything on your system.
My sister once got a pretty well hidden virus that disguised itself as a adobe flash update and when she updated aka meaning she allowed it to download itself, it literally wiped everything out on her computer. Including all her uni work. Even corrupted and got into the portable hard drive.
Now I was lucky because I rarely download or update things and check. So I didn't get infected or anything lol since my system is seperate
