Capitalists Conspire to Rape you Early and Aggressively
May 30, 2017
Michael Hudson
http://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2017/05/30/middle-class-now-company-store-class/
Excerpts:
Students usually don’t think of themselves as a class. They seem “pre-class,” because they have not yet entered the labor force. They can only hope to become part of the middle class after they graduate. And that means becoming a wage earner – what impolitely is called the working class.
But as soon as they take out a student debt, they become part of the economy. They are in this sense a debtor class. But to be a debtor, one needs a means to pay – and the student’s means to pay is out of the wages and salaries they may earn after they graduate.
The middle class in America consists of the widening sector of the working class that qualifies for bank loans – not merely usurious short-term payday loans, but a lifetime of debt. So the middle class today is a debtor class.
Students who do succeed in getting a job hope to start a family, or at least joining the middle class. The most typical criterion of middle-class life in today’s world (apart from having a college education) is to own a home. But almost nobody can buy a home without getting a mortgage. And the price of such a mortgage is to pay up to 43 percent of one’s income for thirty years, that is, one’s prospective working life.
Banks know how unlikely it is that workers actually will be able to earn enough to carry the costs of their education and real estate debt. The costs of housing is so high, the price of education is so high, the amount of debt that workers must pay off the top of every paycheck is so high that American labor is priced out of world markets (except for military hardware sold to the Saudis and other U.S. protectorates). So the banks insist that the government pretends that housing as well as education loans not involve any risk for bankers.
The Federal Housing Authority guarantees mortgages that absorb up to the afore-mentioned 43 percent of the applicant’s income. Income is not growing these days, but job-loss is. Formerly middle-class labor is being downsized to minimum-wage labor (MacDonald’s and other fast foods) or “gig” labor (Uber). Here too, the fees mount up rapidly when there are defaults – all covered by the government, as if it is this compensates the banks for risks that the government itself bears.
It may be enlightening to view matters from the vantage point of bankers. After all, they have $1.3 trillion in student loan claims. In fact, despite the fact that college tuitions are soaring throughout the United States even more than health care (financialized health care, not socialized health care), the banks often end up with more education expense than the colleges. That is because any interest rate is a doubling time, and student loan rates of, say, 7 percent mean that the interest payments double the original loan value in just 10 years. (The Rule of 72 provides an easy way to calculate doubling times of interest-bearing debt. Just divide 72 by the interest rate, and you get the doubling time.)
A fatal symbiosis has emerged between banking and higher education in America. Bankers sit on the boards of the leading universities – not simply by buying their way in as donors, but because they finance the transformation of universities into real estate companies. Columbia and New York University are major real estate holders in New York City. Like the churches, they pay no property or income tax, being considered to play a vital social role. But from the bankers’ vantage point, their role is to provide a market for debt whose magnitude now outstrips even that of credit card debt!
Citibank in New York City made what has been accused of being a sweetheart deal with New York University, which steers incoming students to it to finance their studies with loans. In today’s world a school can charge as much for an education as banks are willing to lend students – and banks are willing to lend as much as governments will guarantee to cover, no questions asked. So the bankers on the school boards endorse bloated costs of education, knowing that however much more universities make, the bankers will receive just as much in interest and penalties.
It is the same thing with housing, of course. However much the owner of a home receives when he sells it, the bank will make an even larger sum of money on the interest charges on the mortgage. That is why all the growth in the U.S. economy is going to the FIRE sector, owned mainly by the One Percent.
Under these terms, a “more educated society” does not mean a more employable labor force. It means a less employable society, because more and more wage and consumer income is used not to buy goods and services, not to eat out in restaurants or buy the products of labor, but to pay the financial sector and its allied rentier class. A more educated society under these rules is simply a more indebted society, an economy succumbing to debt deflation, austerity and unemployment except at minimum-wage levels.
For half a century Americans imagined themselves getting richer and richer by going into debt to buy their own homes and educate their children. Their riches have turned out to be riches for the banks, bondholders and other creditors, not for the debtors. What used to be applauded as “the middle class” turns out to be simply an indebted working class.

I was watching something on the Congo last night.
An area that has about the same population as the U.S.
at first glance they appeared to be living off the land, but in reality they were taking whatever they could find...food, natural resources, whatever and selling it, and they were burning down the rain forest to make charcoal too...to sell that too.
Literally raping the land to get by on and make a buck.
Well, it is Capitalism, either way you slice it, and its still considered the poorest area on the planet too.
I guess organized, intelligent Capitalism is better than that...as its better than a Dictatorship, or a Monarchy, where the little people work their a** off for literally nothing.
To really assess something, you have to compare it with what else is out there.
Well, if nothing else, we found out why the op isn't packing his bags to go elsewhere...

Oh my God, you right-wing capitalism-lovers are absolutely correct. This doesn't happen very often but I'm going to do a complete 180.
Like all my new right-wing, capitalist BFFs, I truly love capitalism and the super-rich, ruling-class elites. I cheer for the way they organize to invest (notice I no longer call it "conspire to rape") so that our children are saddled with massive student-loan debts and mortgage debts. It's truly capitalism genius! Our children grow up with almost all of their income and more destined for the pockets of our much-beloved capitalist gods, just as it rightfully should be.
America! Love it or leave it! But don't ever complain about capitalism or we right-wingers will have to load up our guns and kill your f**king commie asses! And we don't want to hear none of your commie shit about how American capitalism is responsible for the fact that Haiti is a shit-hole; and Afghanistan is a shit-hole; Mexico is a shit-hole; South America is a shit-hole; Africa is a shit-hole; the Middle East is a shit-hole; and now the richest capitalists are busy trying to turn America itself into a shit-hole. Just shut the f**k up and love it or leave it! That's your only choice!
I capitalism!

Condor, if you hate Democracy and Capitalism so much.
Then why haven't you left and gone somewhere, where it doesn't exist?
Surely that's what someone would do if they were like you.
So, why haven't you???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
No one is stopping you, but yourself, because you don't have the guts to do it.
People like that become the sheep by their own choice.

Dude, my deep hatred for democracy is exactly why I love capitalism. The overwhelming percentage of the American people is the working-class. Our beloved, lazy, non-productive, rich capitalists are just a small percentage. Imagine the horror if the working-class held state power (i.e., socialism). How would our beloved capitalists be able to get rich off of the labor of workers if workers held state power? No, democracy is shit! Our beloved capitalism doesn't want none of that! We want the illusion of democracy while we merely shit power among rich capitalists who promote the wants and desires of rich capitalists.

Unless the parents of the students have great incomes the students can apply for hope. They can go to school close to home and get a part time job instead of taking out all those loans. The problem is the students are taking out those loans without thinking about having to repay it.
Homes aren't suppose to be free. Too many people buy homes with the maximium amount they are approved for. They never consider a 15 year loan or ever make an extra payment.
I have friends who have extra money at different times through out the year. They sit around and think up something to buy. It never occurs to then to pay on their debt. They could save alot on interest but making minimum payments has become the American way. Why skip vacation, going out to dinner, or new outfit to pay on debit? That would be torture. People are so entitled now days.

I'm not disputing some of that is true.
The bottom line is...why haven't you left?
and what's out there, that is any better?
and from what I can see, the common people anymore are lazy too....and have the highest standard of living, ever before in human history.
Also, some these company owners put a lot into starting their companies.
have you ever done that or tried???
Try it sometime and see what education it takes and how many years invested into that and risking loans, and everything else.
Its like owning a small business, but magnified times 10,000.
Also...there was a short period of time when the common people did have the power...thru mass, united protest....the only time that ever happened in human history and "they" broke that up by turning the little guys into being against each other....by disturbing each factor into doing the same things that you do.
In short, you've been brainwashed to do their dirty work for them by causing people not to be united....and stiring them up....exactly as they planned.
Condor...its always been this way since day one of humans....even in the African tribes.
One Chief, the rest are under him.

Majority of students cannot afford 95 percent of US colleges
By Kathleen Martin
8 April 2017
World Socialist Web Site
https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2017/04/08/stud-a08.html
Excerpts:
A recent report shows that US colleges are becoming increasingly unaffordable. “Limited Means, Limited Options: College Remains Unaffordable for Many Americans,” released in March 2017 by the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP), shows 95 percent of American colleges are too expensive for the majority of low-income students.
The study draws shocking results. “[A]lthough the student from the highest income quintile in these analyses could afford to attend 90 percent of colleges in the sample,” the report states, “the low- and moderate-income students with fewer financial resources could only afford 1 to 5 percent of colleges.”
Working class students and youth are faced with bleak options for future employment. Most jobs that pay “decent” wages require a college degree or certificate. But over the last several decades, there has been a significant shift in financial policy for higher education: on the one hand, the cost of attaining a degree has skyrocketed and, on the other, state and federal funding for college costs has been rolled back significantly.
These tuition hikes and funding cutbacks have effectively educationally crippled millions of working class students and youth in the US. Student loan debt has again reached an all-time high, weighing in at $1.4 trillion nationally. The average 2016 college graduate has a massive $37,172 in student loan debt, according to March 2017 statistics from studentloanhero.com.
The IHEP report cites low funding for the Pell Grant as a major factor in college unaffordability. In some states, funding for the Pell Grant has gone up in recent years, but not in proportion to the continually rising cost of tuition as well as other expenses, such as books and fees—not to mention vital day-to-day living expenses like rent, groceries and health care.
“On average,” the report states, “the low-income student needs to finance an amount equivalent to more than 100 percent of their family’s annual income to attend one year at a four-year college, compared with high-income students, who must finance only 15 percent on average.”
The study notes that for independent students, meaning students who cannot rely on family to contribute to their education, loans are a major factor in deciding where to attend college. The lowest-income student example cited in the study can afford to attend 3 percent of colleges without loans. With Subsidized Stafford loans, the number of schools considered affordable is raised from 3 to 9 percent, which still leaves the vast majority of higher-education institutions out of reach.
Most students in the independent and low-income dependent groups are forced to work full-time out of necessity to avoid being buried in student loan debt. Poor performance at any level of education is directly correlated to problems faced by the working class. A full-time student who needs only to worry about grades and studying is much more likely to achieve academic success than a full-time student who is also a full-time worker.
The results drawn from the study reflect precisely what is happening at large, in not only American society, but globally as well: the gap between the rich and the poor, and what is accessible to each, is growing larger, and has an impact on every aspect of social life.

Thanks to O'Bailout and his Commie bullshit healthcare MANDATE(You can't blame Bush, when it is called OBAMACARE), I now have to pay excessive health care insurance premiums or face excessive tax penalties, for health care that doesn't cover anything I would need to use it for......

The great thing about being a Fox-News-loving Republican is that you can say lots of contradictory stupid shit that makes absolutely no sense at all.
It was your beloved capitalism that needed trillions of dollars in bailouts, and it was the leading capitalists demanding them. It was the president funded into power by the leading capitalists, Barack Obama, who dished those bailouts to the richest capitalists. Obama is now being paid off by those capitalists for a job well done.
Forcing you to purchase capitalist health-insurance so that you can pay for outrageously overpriced capitalist health-care is capitalism's answer to the insanity of capitalist health-care.
What you clearly hate is capitalism but you call all that you hate about it "socialism." But Marx was very clear on what socialism is. It's not dishing out lots of bailout funds, war funds, corporate subsidies and stadium funds to rich capitalists. It's not forcing you to buy capitalist health insurance so that you can afford capitalist health care. Socialism is government by the productive members of society, the working-class. That's it! That's all it is. Any true democracy would quickly become socialism as the overwhelming majority of the people are working-class.

Your mother doesn't want to admit how things really are. She is still playing the victim just like you are. Your kids will be crying about the govt too.

You will never be black no matter how many black movies u watch and Ice Cube and his son do not want a old bitter Georgia based babymomma.
Your time is expired you should've got a black man 25 years ago but u waited until the white guys wore u out only to divorce you. Now u are damaged goods that no man wants.

Black guys never stop chasing white women. I'm suprised they were honest about the way they live. It goes to show you can't fix people with money. Btw doesn't icecube have a white wife?

What makes her plastic? She seems to be a pretty savvy woman.
Haven't both Ices been married a long time to their spouses? They all seem really happy together, too.

The things that make a woman sexy has nothing to do with color.
I expect women see men in the same way.
