Yes! I love to stop every 2-3 hours. I can drive for long periods of time and it doesn't get old. I like to go speak to the locals and ask where the best spots are that hardly anyone out of town doesn't know them. I enjoy taking pictures of different places. I need a road trip soon. I want to travel Route 66. I think it would be great to take my son when he is driving in a few years

I've done some of the RT 66 drive. It's interesting, but you should probably get to it soon since, I think, a lot of it has been (and is being) swallowed up by development. I like the roadside attractions and the going through all the small towns.
There were several routes like that throughout the country. One, back in MN, I really enjoyed. You couldn't do the whole route on the route. You ended up on some interstates and then could switch back over, but the motels that were still there were fun. Very kitschy.
I found photo albums of my late husband's late aunt who had done all sorts of road trips when she was young. Those pictures were so fun to look at. They must have ranged from the 30's to the 80's. I wish I could have heard the stories that went along with them.

I think the most famous of the motels along RT 66 is the Wigwam Motel. Looks like it's still operational.

Still love them. Though adult house and pet owning responsibilities and work keep from doing them like I used to.
"Hey man! Come visit me in Colorado for a week! Got a couch with your name on it!"
"Sure man! I'll be there in 3 days!"
And I prefer to take the secondary roads and drive by myself. That way, the music I like is always playing. I don't have to stop for anyone else's bladder. And I can stop and check out any out of the way weird shit or interesting shit or weird and interesting shut that catches my eye.

Just hearing about the travels makes me so excited to go on more adventures. I will keep that in mind about Route 66. Maybe I should just plan to go next summer with my son. He is entering high school. I'd love to build some memories together taking in all the roadside attractions and going through the small towns. That sounds like a blast!
I feel like photography is such a beautiful way to see what somebody experienced. I enjoy looking at photographs. I think that is such a endearing treat to be able to have pictures to see through the eyes of another even if we don't get to hear the stories along with them. I look at pictures of my family members that I didn't get to meet and I take a road trip with them in a sense. I agree though sometimes I wish I could have heard the stories firsthand. Maybe one day we will hear them when we join them after we join them. Imagine all the stories we could all share.

Yeah, well had I followed AAA, I would have rested at a hotel just after crossing into W.Va. or just before I got out of Ohio. All I gotta say is this, anyone that thinks Camaros have no room in them are mistaken. I am 6' 02", and was able to comfortably sleep in the driver's seat, that night.

U.S. 20 is coast-to-coast, from Boston, MA to I think Washington state. It is the longest highway in the country, followed closely by Interstate 80(which I live 20 minutes from I-80, ironically)

There's a Youtube channel where the guy follows as much of the original Route 66 as possible. He goes so far as to use gps and original maps traveling on wilderness roads no longer used. The state of Illinois has quite a bit of Route 66 in use even some sidewalk highway.

So U.S. is the top half of the country? I wonder if that's one my husband's aunt took. She did, at least one road trip from MN to CA, going through Yellowstone. (I should try and scan some of her pictures and post them.)
The highway system began in the 30's, or earlier? One of the pictures she took was at a highyway-side picnic area. Apparently, a lot of highways had areas you could pull off and watch cars buzzing by while eating a picnic lunch.
There will still one left, when I left MN, on the side of an old highway that became a much larger highway over the years. When they redid it, they left that picnic area in place, along with the old beehive grill, and the lilac bushes that gave that part of the highway its name (Lilac Way.)

I'm nit really sure about the original U.S. 66.
I think 20 is all northern states.
66 ends in Los Angeles, CA and I think runs to Washington D.C.
So I would say more like the heartland of America, because mostly midwest/mideast states
Not sure about the highway system being created. I know the Ohio State Highway Patrol was created in the very late 1800s/early 1900s, so you can't be too far off on your guess.

That's almost like the trip we took when I was in 4th grade. We left from Akron, Ohio and picked up Route 66 in St Louis, then we went all the way to San Diego to visit my brother.
Can't say it was one of my favorite trips though. My sister, who is 2 yrs older than me, fought the whole way; and my Dad hated to use the AC in the car, he said it used up more gas. I remember having pillow cases covering the windows in the back seat, don't think they had tinted windows back then I remember the desert being so desperately hot.
But, we survived and enjoyed ourselves in San Diego!

I always have toilet paper, Mongo
In Mexico, all the ladies keep toilet paper in their bras or carry in their purse because in the public restrooms they will charge you by square.
My abuelita taught me well. I always have it just in case.

Mongo is reminded of the Seinfeld episode when Elaine is stranded in the bathroom. "Can you spare a square?"
Mongo is very particular about toilet paper. Mongo has a sensitive butt.

About 15-20 years ago, I visited my Aunt in Hungary with a friend. We took a long weekend trip to Prague, and she insisted we take toilet paper with us since "that Czech stuff was so bad" and we might have to pay for a square.
When I was little, and we'd go to Hungary, there were women in public restrooms selling squares, too.
