The solar eclipse will be on Monday August 21 traveling diagonally across the continental U.S. from Oregon to South Carolina.

My town will be near the edge of the 70 mile wide path of totality, so I'm gonna drive a hundred miles northeastish so I can be smack dab in the middle. My eclipse watching glasses came in the mail yesterday.

Does anyone else have plans to watch it?

Yes, it occurs here on my lunch break I think it's like 70% or something like that here...so I'll be enjoying my soup on the roof along with a few of the common folk probably.

Yep. Have five pair of viewing glasses ready.

We're right on the trajectory.

I'll have my tin foil hat on, too.

Keep an eye out for Ufo's, they like to sit in on eclipses. It's such a huge coincidence that the distance between the sun, moon and Earth results in the moon pretty much exactly obscuring the sun that it might be one of the rarest planetary occurrences in the whole universe...

So the green and gray guys like to document it.

My daughter's birthday is the 21st of August and I am planning on visiting her and my grandbabes. I just checked the totality viewing map and her small town in NE Kansas lies in the path of totality. Very cool. Guess I better get on those viewing glasses.

annoy you a bit, however we want to make sure more than a couple of people get a chance to respond in a thread. The 'chat' forums and groups don't have this restriction, only a few forums actually have it. You will almost never get this message if you post thoughtful, on-topic replies.

I did some more reading on eclipse glasses and the ones I received the other day don't have the NASA approved ISO number on them. So I just ordered some different PROPER ones so as not to burn the bejeezus out of my peepers during the event. Which is in a little more than 3 weeks!

And for your further nerdly enjoyment, there is a good meteor shower coming up. The Perseids. The peak night will be the very early morning hours of August 13. The sky will be darkish with a half moon and approximately 100 meteors per hour. Now. If only something can be done about the damned clouds...

IL gets the full event (2 minutes cover)

Nashville (full coverage, almost 2 minutes) to Knoxville to South Carolina.

I believe it is about 50 miles from the actual path that can see the eclipse. (wear ISO eclipse eye wear orca welding helmet so you don't burn your eyes out)

Gonna take off work the whole day of the event and drive up to the Clemson SC area with a cooler and a lounge chair and my eclipse specs. Maybe leave 3 hours beforehand to scout out a good secluded place where I can liquid toast the moon shadow with a lil drinkiepoo.

i am 2 hour drive away from the closest path of it and i already have my solar glasses required to watch the eclipse...bought them off amazon lol

what i find interesting is science is sending up balloons to capture images and bacteria because the moon eclipse to the sun presents similar conditions to mars and they want to see how the bacteria reacts to it.

i can't wait to see it

I remember that one. Did you know you can view it through an exposed piece of X-ray film? That's how I watched the last one, although X-ray film is hard to come by now-a-days. I may have to dig around and find my old films I used to teach with
