From my understanding they didn't think it was going to hit Houston as hard as it did, that's why they didnt call for evacuations in that area...I could be wrong, that's what I had heard

It would have been worse they said to evacuate so many people in such a short time

It was only a tropical storm on wednesday then only thought to hit at a cat 3

Goes to show mother nature will never be predictable

Weather people don't know it all. They said Hurricane Hugo would not go inland. It did, and devastated Charlotte. People came to Charlotte to get away from it. It really tore up the city. It was awful.

We have news up dates ever few hours on TV here...There is an Aussie reporter on location...

now there is a Mandatory Evacuation for Sugar Land...

""Sugar Land - The Fort Bend County Judge's Office says a mandatory evacuation has been issued for Sugar Land residents in First Colony Levee Improvement District #1 and those living within the Fort Bend County Levee Improvement District #7.

Judge Hebert advised residents can't go east into Houston, but they can still go north and west. Most roads going north to west are open right now, but they will start to close around 3pm due to high water

If residents wait to leave, they will have to wind their way through many detours in the county. By 7pm or 8pm tonight, more roads will be covered with water. As many as 100 roads were already blocked as of 5am.

People in mandatory evacuation areas need to be moving by 4 p.m. to either evacuate or get to a shelter, according to Judge Hebert.

Local and national meteorologists have been saying since Wednesday that the two high pressure areas just north of Houston would block the movement of this hurricane. I'm in Indiana and all of the local weather people have been saying this will a big problem.

Houston is the 4th largest city in the country. Trying to get 2.5 million people to evacuate in such a short time would have people stuck on freeways during the storm. Not a good idea. It would be like trying to evacuate Chicago within 48 hours.

When Katrina hit New Orleans people tried to leave but because of traffic lots of people were stranded on I-10 and Houston is a MUCH larger metropolis.

If I lived in Corpus Christi or anywhere along there where the hurricane hit, I would have evacuated.

I think Houston wasn't evacuated because they didn't think at first that the hurricane was headed their way.

At the very best meteorologists can "guess" the weather about 3 days out. Yet you hear Al Gore and other pukes telling us if we don't get rid of oil and coal or whatever else they say, we are going to be extinct in 30-50 years! Don't listen to that CRAP!

You idiot climate change deniers are a waste of time, and living in the past. Also, your last statement about us being dead in 50 years? You pulled that right out of your f**king ass. No one has said that. Oil and coal are the past. You're just too f**king stupid to realize that green jobs are the future. Have fun with your irrelevant dinosaur status in the years to come. Your thoughts will be meaningless.

Like I said jack ass. Do some research. There's about 50 thousand coal jobs left in America. It's a dead industry. I never once said oil isn't important to the world's economy. It is, for now. But talking stupid shit about Al Gore doesnt take away the fact that pumping this shit in the atmosphere isn't f**king over our environment. Who told you that climate change is fake? Jesus? Yes...I would have even left Houston even though they said not to because I know it is an area always subject to flooding...the reason they said evacuate Houston is because they didn't want so many people on the roads and getting stranded or worse in the flooding....

But seriously. Hard to say. If my house was on high ground then probably not. I want wouldn't want to get stuck on a highway with upwards of a million or more of my neighbors when it came ashore.

I would evacuate because there's no need in putting yourself in danger. Unlike idiots of New Orleans who thought the gubment should come get them and take care of them most people would make contingency plans of some sort. 1833 people died in Hurricane Katrina. That should tell ya something.

Confirmed death toll so far in Texas is 48 I believe and 1833 died in Katrina. Difference in doers and takers. That may not be totally fair but those are the numbers. Some deaths in katrina couldn't be helped but a good majority could have.

Let me lay this scenario out.....

You are living paycheck to paycheck. Funds may be tight or non existent.

You have no car and rely upon public transport.

Not every one has a support system, aka friends..family etc. Many many don't.

So, can you afford bus tickets/plane tickets or car rental for x amount of ppl in your family or even just for yourself ?

Questionable.....

If you do ? Where are you going ? How are you going to pay for a room for, let's say 5 days on the short end ? Then food etc ?

Yes, you could go to a shelter city, do you know where the shelter is ? How to get there from the bus terminal etc ?

Here ? They were bringing ppl in and then asking them for "documentation" "papers", if they didn't have them ? They were deporting them to Mexico.

Now for the statements of "people expecting the government" to "save them", here is how I see it.

Most cities have massive public bus systems here....We have roughly 524 buses available alone, each holds about 67 ppl ...that is a lil over 35,000 people in one swoop. It takes about 2 hours from here to the coast, essential personal cld have gone down on the 1st trip...in one 24 hr period that would have been 6 trips....total of 210,000 ppl a lil under a 1/4 of a mil in one day evacuated. And then disbursed to other cities.

Houston has one of the largest bus systems in the US....
Service area?: ?Harris County Routes?: ?75 local bus routes; 32 commuter bus ...
Fleet?: ?1,250+ (bus); < about 83,000 plus on one run........

These buses, the drivers etc are being paid for by tax payers...riders ect.

Now let's factor in how many school buses ? Also tax payers property........

Yes, a massive evacuation is doable.........just has to start before the damn storm HITS.

They tried to evacuate Houston for an earlier storm some years ago. The death count was higher than what is being experienced now. To many people moving at once on finite area of roadway, many accidents, some caught up in the storm, stranding without supplies.

When Hurricane Rita barreled toward Texas in 2005, an exodus of about 3 million people contributed to as many as 107 deaths — BEFORE the storm. Traffic jams stretched across hundreds of miles over two days, and many people running out of gas and abandoning their vehicles. Dozens died from accidents and heat-related illnesses, all before Rita even made landfall. With Harvey it could have been even worse on roads that quickly got flooded with several feet of fast-moving water.

Suburbs don't have mass transit. Half the city transit was under water.

Houston area is about 7 million people. You can't evacuate 7 million people on 5 main highways.

we're getting our buns kicked in oregon. 1,373 wildfires 73 new fires.
nowhere to run. fires are all around us and the quality of the air is hazardous.

sorry man. I know it really sucks. I'm in a valley so I'm safe pretty much from the fire itself but people here are becoming ill from the smoke and air quality. a lot of evacuations in other places though.

dang we should set meat out to smoke. lol ( bad joke )
well everything smells like smoke.

Yeah it hasn't been this bad since we had the biscuit fire about 6-7 years ago whenever it was.

I'd secure the place as best I could. I'd move the stuff I couldn't take with me to the top floor and hope for the best and then I'd leave. I've got a cousin in Frisco, she could show me Alcatraz.

Traffic bottleneck is a bad thing and during Katrina it was awful. Everyone was trying to leave at the same time. Some left earlier and they made it out.

use plastic sheeting inside your windows, duct tape them tightly.

We were taught to do that in Kuwait in case of chemical weapons.

Have a plastic rolled up at the top of each window, let it down, tape it to wall.
