I am Canadian ,i lived in the states for 15 years and came back to mother land a few years agoo, and upon my return i had planned to cross my country entirely ,just for the sake of knowing my country bette and see it,s beauty. To all ,there was no dissappointment it truly is a beautiful country, not because it's mine, but it is clean, vast and the Rockies in Alberta are breath taking, the rivers are so clean..if you have a chance to go ,go.

It has been about 15 years ago but my late hubby and I entered Canada and went through Montreal and drove across (I think thy called it the Queen's highway?) Anyhow, went all the way to Toronto and crossed back over near Niagra Falls. I was amazed at the cleanliness but was told the fines were quite large for litering. Was awed by the falls. Went back about 5 years ago just to the falls with hubby #2 and it may have just been sad memories from Hubby #1 and the great time we had but somehow it wasn't the same the second go round.

I would like to go by rail East to West so that I could just take in all the beauty and not have to watch were I was going. I saw a special on PBS, it was so beautiful. I wonder how long the clickity Clack sounds of the track would remain in your brain after a solid week of it. Has anyone here had a rail experience across Canada, pros and cons please? Channa

photophemmy, do you actually think people are bringing lbs back and forth through border control check points now? If they are doing that, a passport won't curb it. What's this got to do with wanting to see the beauty of Canada.... Channa

I have read/ heard on news that you do need a *passport* as ID.....
does someone else know about PHOTO ID other than passport,
that is acceptable now?

I have been to Montreal in 1979..cold and winter y...of course.

I have been to Victoria BC and loved it! The Bouchart Gardens in July
are magnificent...and a stay at the Empress Hotel is not to be missed...
if possible. High Tea at 4:00pm with the ambiance of the formal tea room...
was it called the Bengal Tea room? I just recall it had a Bengal tiger theme....
Blackamoors, and tapestries, dark woods...just elegant.

Oh and the wagon rides with the big horses, and blankets for the
crisp breeze when the wind blows!

How about the Calgary Stampede??????

Canada has been one of my favorite vacation spots (even with the great exchange rate long gone) I actually just got back from a couple days in vancouver and harrisons hotsprings. Usually I'll just head straight north to Nelson, BC for some nice hotspring soaking and great views. Would like to do some camping up in Banff national park but that will have to wait till next summer.

Many moons ago (1970's) a friend and I took the trans-Canadian train from Quebec to Vancouver. It was a GREAT trip, and highly recommended. They discontinued this run a while back, but there was talk about having it again. Anyone know if it's alive and well yet? I'd do it again. Train travel is fun, you can get off in the Rockies for days and then get back on, and they had a glass roofed car to see the world from and relax.

Being in Maine and bordered by Canada on two sides, there's is a lot of affinity with our neighbors. Many Maine towns have roots and French as a native language. If you have never been to Cape Breton in Nova Scotia you are in for a treat, as well as Newfoundland and Labrador (I have yet to go) are incredible places on this planet.

I'd rather go north or east to Canada most of the time!

Yes Canada is worth the trip!
If you can get in...as in the USA
Canada has its restrictions....
that can be a real pain in the ass.

Also if you are going to La Belle Province...
you had better learn Francois....
because these people and their government
are definatly seperatist when it comes to language!

I know in many states bordering Quebec
road signs are in english and french
but NOT in Quebec

I have lived in Calgary, Alberta for 7 years, absolutely beautiful city, not to mention all the great Rockies with glaciers, lakes and wildlife. And I have traveled to BC and Vancouver Island.
Very regretfully I came back to the US only because of the terrible medical situation in Calgary. It might be free, but they give you plenty of time to die while waiting to be seen by any specialist. How about a 5-month wait for a visit to a cardiologist when you have a heart condition that caused you to collapse?
However I will be going back as a tourist often, one place on my list is Churchill, Manitoba to see the white bears, another one is the long drive along the St. Lawrence river to the ocean tip of the Gaspe peninsula.

This country is so vast, and it's landscapes are so diverse, that "the beauty of Canada" could mean so many different things.
The great lakes.
The breath-taking skies on the prairies.
The majesty of the Rocky Mountains.
The lush plant life and amazingly huge trees of the west coast.
The lakes and rivers of the boreal forest.
The polar bears on the shores of Hudson's Bay.
The northern lights.
The wildlife.

I live in Canada, and enjoy travelling around Canada. But I have to admit that there's still a lot of this country that I haven't seen.
I live in western Canada, so most of my travel experiences in this country are in the west. Hopefully I'll some day get to the east coast.

I lived in Edmonton Alberta, traveled across Canada from Montreal back in the late '70'. I loved Edmonton, the culture and the city. What I remember most was all the steps throughout the city and the indians sleeping in the park. Back then they were all over the park. I remember having to walk around them while walking to work each day. It did'nt bother me though, sleeping off a drunk was none of my business.

Planning a trip this July to Nova Scotia and along the coast all the way around the Gaspe Peninsula. Doing it all on my bike (motorcycle). I would really love to see the Canadian Rockies. I've been to Colorado twice on the bike and loved it. But I hear they are much more in Canada.
I think this trip will be a bit of a culture shock for me. I don't know a lick of french,, but fortunately I'll be with a friend from Canada,,,, so he can do all the talking,,.lol.

I have been in most of the Canadian Provinces. The Rockies of Alberta are just beautiful. Quebec City has all the charm of Europe. Niagara Falls are amzing when viewed from the Canadian side. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have quaint little villages. Yukon Territory is a beautiful wilderness. Those are some of my favorite rememberances, but British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick also had fond memories for me. I have not been to Newfoundland, Labrador or the Northwest Territories.

Bay of Quinte area, Beaver lake, Devil`s lake, Rice lake, Pointe Au Baril on the Georgian bay was a destination for 25 years, French River, all beautiful. I will take the Canadian side of Niagra Falls over the US side any day.

One stop to check out the night life in Toronto, like 1973, a happening city then, Younge street, a very good time.

When living in Pennsylvania, crossed into Canada at Buffalo, N.Y., and drove to Niagra Falls, rode the Maid of the Mists, viewed the whirlpool down river but was too chicken to ride the aero car across the river. Saw the documentary of the train ride across Canada, would love to do that. A local television morning show host and newsman hosts a train tour through Canada from the U.S. to Alaska. One day maybe... Curious to see Nova Scotia since I'm half Cajun and that's where the French settled and the area was Acadia.

Enjoyed Niagara region, the Soo Locks, Windsor, London and Port Stanley all in Ontario. But even more fun was landing a floatplane on a totally isolated lake and the most incredible fishing about 100 miles north of Wawa. I love Canada! Still much more to see eventually. I did all my trips pre 9/11 and have never used a passport. It seems now that products and trade is supposed to be this free travel/trade from mexico to canada, why should people have less freedom of movement than the corporations? Alas I digress, sorri.

I lived in BC Canada for almost a year 2009/2010 on Vancouver Island. Was very beautiful and loved the way it " smelled ". But beauty also has it drawbacks and one of them was too much rain. It's what makes it so lush and green yes, but very depressing as well. Also after growing up in the US and being used to our shopping and health care, it was quite a culture shock. I would love to go back sometime perhaps when I do an Alaskan Cruise. I have also been to the Eastern part by Niagara Falls. I know there is much beauty in between but there is also a lot of beauty right here in the USA. Happy Trails everyone.

I want to go to Vancouver (was supposed to go there for my honeymoon but the wedding got called off) still and probably Toronto. Both in large part because I want to see some Douglas Coupland sculpture up close and personal. Also, in respects to Vancouver, they let you feed sea otters at the aquarium for a small fee and a reservation. I don't care about not getting married - I care that I didn't get to feed my otters!
