What can you tell me about Greece and surrounding countries? Have been offered the chance to go to Greece in April, for 88 day stay if I want (spliting a townhouse in Greece).
Any pointers?

Looks like the plan to go to Greece is "Jelling", have gotten one more person to go in on the town house, that makes 4 people total.
We are all in agreement that anyone we want to invite can come spend a few weeks. The plan is (for the three of us) to travel to every place we want from the town house so now we have a house sitter for 2 weeks, while we are gone. Since we will be renting it for 3 months, my guess is that it will be basicly empty most of the time.

It has been 30 years now since I came back from spending 4 years in Athens. I suppose a lot has changed, but most likely the traffic has not. Be careful! they are really nutty drivers. It didn't bother me because I learned to drive in Italy, and we are equally nutty behind a wheel! For me it was fun, but I know of a few Americans who simply refused to drive while stationed in Athens.
Be prepared that or roads with only one lane in each direction, and solid line in the middle, if you don't go fast enough and someone catches up with you, he will be blinking his headlights and blow the horn, that is a sign that he wants you to move over and drive on the shoulder, so that he can pass you, without crossing the center line.
And shoulders have a tendency to disappear without warnings if there is just a 2-lane bridge! So look out driving after dark.
A bus full of passengers did that to me, I refused to move on the shoulder, it was night time, so eventually lost his patience and he passed me on the right side, driving the bus on the unpaved shoulder!
Where is this townhouse? In Athens? The Alpha-Beta grocery store is a good one, they are in every neighborhood.
In the Taverna (cheap restaurants, usually with an outdoor garden) fish is always caught on the same day. Ask for FangriĆ and for Tzipuria. I don't know the traslation in English, but they are the best! Be adventourous, do try the octopus, they know how to cook it and it stays tender.
Although it is in southern Mediterranean sea, the water gets deep very quickly and it stays too cold for swimming until mid-July.
Forget taking local busses, they are overcrowded and most people take a bath once a week! (And I don't think they sell deodorants in Greece). Taxi used to be very cheap.

I haven't been to Greece yet but I am going to Santorini, Greece in June and I have been researching it. Like someone said be careful driving and they roads are much better recent work done. We are getting a townhouse apt. also for the two weeks we are going . Are you familiar with the euro? Easy to figure out I find getting money from Atm's is cheaper and it comes in their money ,don't take american money to exchange you'll lose money . I travel every six months to either London or Italy and I find it easier and cheaper to use Atm's. I hope I have been some help in a small way. Hey maybe we could bump into one another while there for a drink .

Two years ago I was in Italy, and to my surprise, it was nearly impossible to cash US, Canadian and Euro American Express travelers' cheques. This had never happened before. Eventually I found one bank that did cash the cheques. They suggested that since I will be going home (Italy) more often, I should open a foreign account and have money transferred to it ahead of time.

Shoping in the old town market can be a trip in it self right at the base of the Acropolis. Don't forget to go to a dinner club and get into the act, don't be afraid to throw the plates and cups on the floor smashing them to pieces, . Also check out the amphitheater. The accutics are amazing and a visit to the grand cannel in the north. Out of Athens take the road south to Eufalla, great beaches and going further around and up the hill thers beautiful seneary with olive plantations but be prepared to stop suddenly at the border crossing into Turkey. Have fun and be careful
Oh if you have a chance to go on an island cruise,, do it..
