Got back from Utah all safe n sound. That was one of the best trips I've had in awhile.
Camped at about 12,000' in elevation ( snow on the highest peaks),huge Aspen, fir and oak stands all turning color. Frost on the ground every morning,Elk screaming every night and deer literally "everywhere". Intended to stay for three days but extended it to 5.
Camp was simple but comfy. Got a new 4 season tent and a new bag(rated to 0 degrees) just for the trip, glad I did.
I was a happy camper.

I started out as a kid camping with grandpop and nana ...they had a Shasta travel trailer..all i did was sleep in it..the times i was awake, we were outside.
then I got older..sleep in a pup tent in the Army..with another soldier..in a pup tent...please.
then i got married and she don't camp..so for 20 years, i didn't camp..but then i got involved in the boy scouts and slept in a tent..thats when i found out i don't like tents..so I built a Teardrop trailer..perfect.
then i bought a small Shasta travel trailer..more perfect.
but I have to sell the Shasta, so it's back into the teardrop.

Where is everyone's sense of adventure? I love camping in a tent in the middle of the winter. Granted, you have to be a little more prepared. If there's 6 inces of snow on the ground, I'm going camping.

Seen a guy rolling down the interstate in a "short bus" lol, converted into a camper. I thought that was cool. I've always wanted a Scotty but for 1-2 people the short bus conversion seems practical.

I put tenting. but I like pop-ups. Used to have a topper on my pickup and would use that as my tent with just a sleeping bag.
Too young for a motor home or travel trailer.

I'm not sure if it's in the open it tent, but I really enjoy just using some tarp/string/rock and sleep on the ground. did a couple of survival courses when I was younger and had a blast. Tents are a pain and never go up quick enough lol.
I actually prefer to hike around Jan-March. I like a little snow.
Currently I live in South Florida and I really miss hiking/trail running/bushwhacking

I remember growing up, we'd go camping up on Upper Creek off of Wilson's Creek out here in Western, NC. We'd camp out in the open, but bring tents in case it would rain. We would rough it, make kool-aid and coffee from the creek water, bathe in the creek, cook crawdads And wakin up to my dad and momma watchin a Momma black bear and her cubs just walking up through the early morning fog in the creek up the mountain not bothering a soul Those were the good ole' days

I have camped in truck campers...not bad; camping trailers...better. I have been eyeing those cabin tents with the frames that can be heated with a wood stove. the sides of those fold into the inside of the tent so that you can put a tarp down and seal the water out. On top of the tarp put a cheap indoor/out door carpet.
Someone makes a tent pellet stove for heat or you can use a kerosene heater. You can also put a cook shack on one end of them and a covered "porch" on the other end...screen both end doors and put a windo with screen on either side so you can air it out.
They come in many sizes. I priced the entire setup five or six years ago and the setup I wanted would cost about 5k. But that included absolutely everything that anyone would need to be very comfy for a couple of weeks...cots with mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows...cooking utensils...something to heat water with to take a shower...etc...
I would not want to set something like that up for just a few days...but it would sure be nice for a couple of weeks or more. My camping trailer gets cramped after two or three days...A person could live in one of these tents for quite some time...and be very comfy, dry and warm.

Although I stated in my previous post that I think I would enjoy using a cabin type tent because of their size and the ability to use a wood or kerosene stove for heat, I think I prefer a camping trailer...I have a reason...and that reason is bears.
I went deer hunting in Norther New Mexico WAAAAAY back when I was in my mid twenties with a friend who had a fair sized tent. It could easily sleep six or eight peple on the floor...We had it set up with two cots, one on either side of the tent with our Ice chest between us for a night stand...our gear stowed at the end of our cots...we had plenty of room inside.
We were the only hunters in the area so we decided not to have a camp fire because we did not want to spook any of the deer away by having the smell of camp fire on our clothing...dumb idea.
We went to bed the first night we were there at about 10:00 PM and had not been in bed more than 15 minutes when I heard something kick a rock just outside out tent door. I asked my friend if he had heard it...he said..."yup"...I asked what he thought it was....he said "probably just a racoon nosing around".....I was still un-nerved. I had never seen a racoon big enough to kick a rock as big as the one I heard kicked. About five minutes later I felt something brush up against my side of the tent and I heard more rocks and leaves and sticks being kicked around out side...
I told my budddy that I had had enough and grabbed my muzzle loader (it was loaded) and went out the door of the tent. It was moon bright outside but I saw nothing. I heard something at the rear of the tent. For some reason, NM likes to start their muzzle loading and rifle deer seasons at the beginning of a full moon...they have done it every year since I began hunting in NM at 14 years of age back in the 60's...
I stepped around the side of the tent on my way to the rear of the tent and saw what looked like a black angus cow run by in front of me and a smaller calf with it. I was wrong...It was a HUGE black bear with her cub. At that time in New Mexico, when you bought a deer license, you also got a bear and turkey license with it....its not like that anymore. At any rate, I had a bear license and I was tempted to shoot the thing because it had the cojones to stumble around in our camp for almost twenty minutes and stick its nose on the side of our tent to sniff me out.
I thought better of it...It had a cub with her and besides that it was night time...I do not and will not eat a bear unless I am starving and have no choice.
It seems as if bears are growing in numbers and spreading all over the USA again...we're having problems with them in South Eastern OK getting into people's trash and a couple of chicken farmers had to run some of them out of their chicken brood bldgs. What is bad is that they are not afraid of people. I ran into five of them within two days during a deer hunt one year. I quit hunting in that spot. They are very quiet in the woods, more quiet than a deer can be...I have had them sneak up behind me and when I finally realized something was behind me all I saw was a tail end or a foot diving into the woods when I turned to look.
I dont like to be around bears...I realize that most wont bother you...but there is always a crazy one out there and I dont want to take the chance of being the person the crazy one finds and attacks...
I like that tear drop camping trailer...that would be perfect to pull behind my jeep....if it only had windows in the doors.

Pop-ups come in many different sizes and weights.
SUVs come in many different sizes and with many power-trains.
You'll need to know the towing capacity of the T.V.
a. Do not ask a salesman they will tell you anything.
b. Do not go by the rating on the hitch.
c. DO read the owners manual.
That is only for starters...

For your part of the country, because of the heat and humidity, watch out for mold with a used unit. Sounds like a fun summer planned!!!
Once it is set up (tow bars, etc) get into a parking lot with cones and/or plastic trash containers and learn how to back up!!

Thanks Paul. I would also like to know if anyone can suggest a brand or anything I need to look out for.
There are many brands of Pop-Up trailers and in each brand there are many models with differing amenities.
Remember, each amenity adds weight and will affect handling on the road.
Three years ago there was a very depressed market for recreational vehicles and trailers; a lot of new ones could be purchased for 1/2 of MSRP.
I still need to know about your Tow Vehicle. You have said it is an SUV but that classification takes in a wide range of vehicles.
At one end of the range is the 3/4 ton Chevy Suburban which can safely tow a 12,000 lb. trailer...
At the other end are little things that can't safely tow a Radio Flyer wagon.
So, what is your TV? What engine does it have? What transmission?
Is it "front wheel", "rear wheel" or "four wheel" drive?
Here is my current rig: Click here to see it.

I like to camp at elevation.. around 7,000ft and higher..in ponderosa pine and aspen forests in rugged mountains in the high country of Arizona.
where its cool even in the middle of summer and the almost daily monsoon thunderstorms cool the afternoons and evenings off to make a warm campfire feel needed..
where youre miles away from even cell phone reception let alone a town..
