I had a fire in my kitchen and was told I'd be out of my home for at least 3 months. Everything was covered in soot and smelled like smoke. I'm thankful I got out alive and I know its just stuff. But the one thing I'm worried about not being salvageable is about half my cookbooks. Some of them are not replaceable.

I'd say my mind, but that's long gone. Or considering how many extremely sharp knives are in there, a better answer might be 'My Temper'

Of the rest of the stuff in there... I agree my cookbooks would be missed. I've got some irreplaceable books & recipes from my mom, and a small 50+ year collection of old advertising cookbooks.

Good one Naughtical! The fire has made me realize that I take a lot of things for granted. I'm in a small hotel apartment until I can get back in my house. I love kitchen gadgets and will have to replace most of the ones I had. Every time I start to cook something in this small kitchen I have to back track a lot because I don't have this or that. At first it was very depressing. Now its starting to hit me as funny. Thank goodness the fire didn't smother my sense of humor.

sorry for the fire - we had one also. I found the little things at first, simple as a spatula.. Then it was spices. Most of all I miss the bread maker. We have not replaced it yet.. One day at a time we will get our kitchen back also..

It would have to be a really hot fire to loose your cast iron. You may be able to salvage it if you reseason it. But it would be hard to find amidst the wreckage. .. I might be relieved to start my kitchen over. Every time I move it's literally half my belongings. My cast iron is my most valued toys aswell.

I would hate loosing my antique cutting board and rolling pin - everything else is replaceable - although my spices/herbs would be sorely missed until they could be replaced!! So sorry to hear about the fire! Glad all living beings are safe, and truly sorry for the loss of favorite cookbooks. Now, you can have the fun of rebuilding and doing everything the way you want it - so start a "kitchen re-do" scrapbook of things you like - it will keep you focused on the future!!

At those who have cookbooks or recipes that are precious and could not be replaced - photo copy the recipes that you use and put them in a notebook. Then put the actual cookbooks in a fire-safe box. That way you have access to them if you need, have instant and easy access to the ones you use, and the books will be safe in case of flood or fire! Just an idea (yes, I have done this)

That's exactly why I don't keep my cookbooks in the kitchen.
There's nothing else that can't be replaced, but I do like my set of knives.

Some of my old cookbooks are irreplaceable, and I'd hate to lose them or my grandmother's cookware. However, mostly I'd just hate to lose other people for whom to cook. I enjoy cooking, but not for just myself too often. My ministry partner shares my living space and I cook for him, and I am always inviting friends and family over for meals.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned their food processor. It makes everything so much faster which is important to me since I cook almost everything from scratch.
