hmmm...I liked Platoon for realism, Full Metal Jacket wasnt bad either..Hamburger Hill because it was 101st...but my favorite was Deer Hunter! I watched it a dozen times and I cried a few times...dunno why, good whiskey maybe...and it hurt for some reason. But it hit on how kids out of a small town ended up in the shit..and suffered..and got lost in drugs, alcohol and all the rest..De Niro was perfect as a "!18" he looked the part, and when they do the scene with him and the NVA and Russian Roulette I wanted to jump in and kill...gut wrenching.

Forrest Gump. Nothing else even comes close. Nobody does it like Forrest. Lt. Dan; "Forrest, have you found Jesus yet?" Forrest; "I didn't know I was suppose to be looking for him."

When I watched Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge he wasnt acting! He had been a US army Drill Instructor in real life..same for Lee Marvin in Big Red One and Dirty Dozen, he was at Normandy (so was Bob Keeshan aka Cpt. Kangaroo). The one who makes me PUKE is Stallone!! He was a draft dodger! Went to Sweden and coached girls volleyball during Vietnam--THEN THE CHICKENSHIT made millions as "Rambo'....and still tries to act like a badass..such a f*g!

I've given different answers to other threads about movies, but I just remembered one I loved and think deserves a mention:
At War With the Army - starring Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin from 1950. It's ridiculous, but so much of the jokes poking fun of the military are still true today.

Full Metal Jacket and Tears of The Sun.
YES! yes. Tears Of The Sun! Never heard of it! Caught it on a move channel one night, loved it and looked it up on the IMDb and was bowled over when I learned it was based on a real incident (they were Canadian, not US soldiers) and many of the people in the movie were actual survivors of the genocide! The old man crying was really crying because the scene they were filming was what he lived through and he was living it all over again!
I think a more realistic (I was there) version of Viet Nam is Siege Of Firebase Gloria. Also The Odd Angry Shot is a humorous look at the Australians in Viet Nam.

When I watched Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge he wasnt acting! He had been a US army Drill Instructor in real life..!
In 1951 during the Korean War, Eastwood was drafted by the United States Army[16] and assigned to Fort Ord in California, where he served as a lifeguard.[17] While on leave in 1951, he was a passenger on a Douglas AD bomber that ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean near Point Reyes.[18][19] Escaping from the sinking aircraft, he and the pilot swam 3 miles (5 km) to safety Wicpedia

Lee Marvin was in the Marines in the Pacific and Bob Keeshan entered the Marines and was still in the US when Japan surrendered. So neither were at Normandy!
I am not sure, but don't think Clint Eastwood was ever a Drill Sgt.

There's tons of war movies out there...but I find myself looking at some sort of obscure war movies like "a bridge too far" .."das boat"..its just hard to pick one thats the bestthan you get these short films like "taking chance" and "Generation Kill" from HBO ...for me both hit home..or on target.

"Generation Kill" from HBO
I sort of enjoyed Generation Kill, but I can't say I thought it was great. And I wanted to like it... After all, I already shelled out the cash for the Blu-ray box set. Here's my beef with that show.
I kind of felt like I was getting preached at. But then it is based on a book or article written by a Rolling Stone Reporter.
Despite being "based on a true story" it has all the cliche characters in every other modern war movie:
Officers that will kill off unlimited numbers of his own men if it gets him a medal... Check!
Retarded captain... Check!
Supersmart Sgt who's a god among men... Check!
Puppy dog eyed Lt who's the one good officer, but no one listens to him because he's an O-1... Check!
Psycho jr enlisted who's a crack shot with a rifle... Check!
Is every marine unit really like that? I swear, every "based on a true story" movie about the marines has the same exact cast of characters.
Still, I did immensely enjoy the E-9 that ran around b*tching guys out for their mustaches. That is real life.

I just watched Generation kill a couple months ago. Being an old Vietnam Vet, I've never been interested in any Gulf War anything, including the first one (other than to say to myself "here we go again", but I enjoyed Generation Kill. I tend not to criticize war movies like that one and most often don't even watch them. As I said, Forrest Gump is my favorite war movie, even though Vietnam was just a minor part of that movie. What I saw looked authentic and made me feel uneasy. Everything from the attitudes, the rain, the firefight, etc., was pretty much spot on. Whoever filmed that part of the movie knew what he was doing.
After Vietnam, I put my photo album along with my jungle boots in a drawer in the closet where they stayed for 40 years. I never thought about it or talked about it. I wore my field jacket till it fell apart; but, otherwise didn't think about that war till just a couple years ago after joining this DH site and seeing these forums. I found my album, scanned my favorite pics into the computer and have occasionally posted them on this site.
There's nothing about Vietnam that makes me proud of having served there. It was do it cause I had to, survive and return home to start my life. I used every bit of my GI college benefits. Otherwise, never been to the VA for anything. I've been an off and on member of the VFW; but, don't much care for the company there. Wrong political persuasion for me, I guess. Anyone that says the VFW isn't a right wing club full of whiners isn't being honest with themselves. There, I've said more than I should have.

Funny you should mention that? I carried the radio and every time my LT wanted to use it, I'd ask WHY? You gonna call in Artillery again? You sure you know where we're at? Can we get a couple smoke rounds first? You know the FO is standing right over there? Can I see the Map? That was standard procedure. Everybody, the LT is calling in some shit again. Pass the word. Keep you heads down.

Where does the electricity come from to recharge your precious electric cars? The same coal burning power stations that you liberals hate! Of course nuclear power plants are much cleaner, but rational thinkers know that crooked politicians and construction companies are responsible for the shoddily built and poorly supervised plants that are far more dangerous than they would be if corners weren't being cut to pad the wallets of politicians and contractors!
So instead of wasting your army of 'useful idiots' on pointless occupation of parks and marches that inconvenience the general public, why don't you mobilize them to rally and lobby for properly built and run nuclear power plants?

Well it's not that I look at the realism but my all time favorite has to be with the strongest charismatic actor I knew growing up and that is the DUKE in "The Green Berets", second would be "Saving Private Ryan", and thirdly "Apocalypse Now", then finally "Heartbreak Ridge".
