I have heard that vermiculite added to the potting mix helps maintain available moisture and also helps the roots find air.

There is also an excellent root drench called BushDoctor Kangaroots. It has many micro nutrients and a fungi that develops root mass, making it easier for the plant to take in both moisture and nutrients. You can call around nurseries to find Kangaroots, as I don;t believe LOwes or HD has it.

This is how I start my seeds - can't remember the last time I bought a seedling.

I start 'Mater and peppers indoors in cups and place in a sunny window - keep moist, never soggy.

I usually use Burpee or Parks seed and get around 90-96% germination.

I have started all my vegetables from seeds for the past three yrs and they turned our fine. I live in an apartment so I do them in pots. They work just fine in pots. If starting from seed plant early to allow extra time to grow. Plus make sure night frost is 45 degrees or higher before planting
