I don't want to "LIVE" with someone until I'm married. I know that sounds old fashioned, but... I am pretty sure that if I moved in with him, he would be even S-L-O-W-E-R about asking me to marry him... afterall, why would he HAVE to marry me if I was doing everything for him at that point?

The average engagement is 11 months. But you're a little past the average age for engagements. By about 20 years.

That's true...once your married, you can stop doing anything for him.

Maybe, men are just smarter these days and learned from their predecessors.

Personally speaking, no marriage for me. Cohabiting is good enough for me.

A man usually will know if he wants to marry a woman within a year of dating her.

So, a year and a half seems like long enough.

Just ask him to be honest with his feelings.

Some men don't want to get married at all, but they want to be in a relationship.

Don't wait, girlfriend. Be straight forward and ask him. Why wait for him to ask u? You should be the one popping the question. Just tell him, hey, let's get married. Wait to see his reaction.

What is the worst thing that could happen. He might say no, then u move on & find yourself another fish. There is more than one fish in the sea.

I'm going to shoot myself in the foot with my answer. I had a wonderful marriage, he passed away ten years ago. I only knew him 3 weeks when we were married. We fell madly in love. There is no set time period for engagement. Follow your heart. I have no regrets that I married him so quickly.

It's an absurd thing to ask. In order to ask such a general question, you have to start by assuming that all men are alike, and they are not.

Maybe if you started by culling people so that you are only talking about men who are actively dating for the purpose of finding a wife (not the majority of all males, from what I can see), you could come up with some sort of a number of dates or experiences, but even that would ignore how varies the reasons are for people to want to marry, or to decide against it.

More than anything else, though, my reaction to the question itself, is that anyone who asks it seriously, doesn't understand the world well enough that any proposals they managed to get would be meaningful.

Whenever you can say you can see yourself spending the rest of your life with someone. May take years... who knows. Do you like him?! Are you happy?! If yes, then who cares how long it takes

It isn't something you can put a timer on...but I would say stick to your guns op. Don't lower your standards. Are you guys friends? When you argue, do you come out better afterwards..is your relationship stronger? Is he worth losing half your money/assets to if it doesn't work out i.e. divorce? I think Marriage is saying I know I stand to lose everything but you know what?? you're worth that risk.

If you shack up, you don't really have the legal backing as with marriage and also if heaven forbid if he dies, who inherits especially if your money/assets went into his assets...If it is in his name, his next of kin will. You would want to be protected.

With that said..it all takes time. You don't want to go into marriage or shacking up lightly and don't do it to up your standard of living i.e. 2 paychecks are better than one and we can afford more crap. You don't want to make it all about you and what you want either . If he doesn't wanna marry don't nag, beg, plead etc. Either be happy where you are or move on.

Wrong, you really don't understand how men think, stop projecting how you would do things on to other people. Living together will just quicken the process one way or the other, he will realize either he doesn't want to live without you, or that he can't live with you, then he will make his decision accordingly. Holding out just makes him more unsure of your compatibility and slower to move forward.

I think this makes the top 20 stupidest questions ever asked...

There is no handbook, set time limit, or rules to something like that...

With this kind of thinking,
It's no wonder there are so many failed marriages and relationships.

And changes the manner in which you can hold joint property, including the automatic passing of your house to your spouse's full possession without probate processes or inheritance taxes. And makes that person your next of kin for medical purposes and inheritance. And allows your spouse to collect social security benefits if you happen to predecease him/her. And allows one of you to cover the other on his/her medical insurance policy. And ensures you access to his/her hospital room even if his/her blood relatives have some kind of grudge and want to bar you. Just for starters.

I'm not saying marriage is necessary; I'm not all that interested in it myself. But, the effects are more far-reaching than you pretend.

Why would anyone HAVE to marry? Sounds like you think marriage can be forced. Perhaps it can, but how rewarding would that be?

I lived with a guy thinking that marriage was only a piece of paper - that I was as happy as I could be (and I was until he died and his family decided to take things that not only belonged to both of us, but some things that were mine before I met him). If we had been married, I still would have been devastated, but I would not have had the vultures in my home.

I now understand the value of marriage, but still only think it gives legal rights rather than changing how I feel about someone. However, some people think marriage will change expectations. Hope both people going into the marriage are in complete agreement about any expected changes.

I can understand your observation on not wanting to live with him until you're married, however think of this idea. What is it about having a wedding and signing a contract that makes you think he THEN really loves you? Why do you need the contract to feel like you're a loving monogamous couple exclusive to each other and both focused on the common goal of a shared successful and loving existence?

I'm just wondering if you want the cohesive bond or the party and the leverage? You guys can still establish a trust, co-own property and debt, and all that. Unless one of you is in some cake a** government job with free benefits, it's not like you're saving money on insurance to any substantial degree.

I guess if you're looking for your own personal prize package then this all goes against that theory, but I figured marriage was because of love and not social ascension.

Better to live with him before marriage than to do it after! You can't truly know someone until you've lived together. Been there- done that- would never do it again....
