I just looked at a list of his books, because this thread reminded me of a paperback book that was on our bookshelf when I was a kid, one of the first books I ever read. It had to have been written in the 60's but I can't find it on line. It was called "The Quality of Courage." A compilation of individual stories of courage. I always liked the dude.

Could you maybe have the title mixed up? There is a book by that title written by Mickey Mantle. There is one called Gifford On Courage written in 1976 available on Amazon.

I'm obviously getting the title wrong, but I k,now for sure Gif wrote the book, I can even remember some of the "stories of individual courage" he wrote about -short stories. One in particular about a person in a sking lodge and how they accidently pick up a hot kerosene lantern and k,nowing that if they were to drop the lamp it could start a blaze in the crowded lodge- so the dude calmly sets the lamp down, instead of just dropping it, receiving severe burns to his hand. I was probably 10yr's old, putting the book at around 1965.

After an extensive search- it was Quality of Courage, by Mickey Mantle, hey it's been almost 50yrs published in 67. I'll bet there was a story in it, about Franks courage after coming back from his head injury. It's definitely the book because in some comments about the book a poster recalls the "oil lamp story." TKs folks, this would have bugged me forever.

as a kid growing up in new york, my dad's favorite team was the Giants. His hero's in the 50's and 60's were Y.A. Tittle, Sam Huff, and one Frank Gifford. "He can do anything with a football", my dad would tell me. And indeed, he could. What an athlete.

Later in life, Frank became the voice of reason and professionalism in the Monday Night Football booth with Dandy Don Meredith and Howard Cossell. As 10s has already mentioned, the man was a gentleman, always courteous, always dignified and was a true pro on and off the field.

For the memories, thanks #16. You brought joy to a number of fans. You will be missed.

Cody Gifford surprises kid with signed Frank Gifford jersey
August 13th, 2015

Hoda shares a story with special guest cohost Savannah Guthrie about the generosity of the Gifford family. Senior producer Joanne LaMarca's son Mack wore a Peyton Manning jersey to Kathie Lee's house since Frank Gifford jerseys are unavailable for purchase. Their son Cody Gifford gave Mack one of Frank's personal jerseys signed by four other Hall of Famers and insisted he keep it.

I watched an old Tim McCarver show last night and Frank Gifford was his guest.

When Roone Arledge (might have spelled his name wrong) finally got the NFL to approve a Monday Night game for the first time ever he started putting his broadcasting team together and hired Gifford first. Then he asked Gifford "what do you think about Howard Cossell? Gifford's answer was "not very much"! They went at it for days before Gifford finally gave in and Howard got the call. Gifford actually recommended Dandy Don for the other broadcasting position in the booth. Gifford had a great sense of humor on this show and he was a class act to go along with it.

McCarver was a good commentary guy.

I liked him when he was with the Mets.

That was a great Summer back in 86.

I had a good job driving a flatbed doing interplant puds for Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage.

A really hot half sicilian half german girlfriend.

A cool bachelor pad in Massapequa Park.

Listening to the Murph, and Gary Thorne call the games on the radio down at Jones Beach.

Going to Shea and booing George Foster when he came to bat.

Doin the wave.

Mike Scott and that 16 inning game.

What a buzz that was.

Game started right after lunch and didnt end till after supper at home.

Everybody was on the phone talkin to eachother saying can you believe this shit.

Watching the games at Mulcahey's in Wantagh.

Then game six and a little roller behind the bag.

Ray Knight scores like he cant believe it.

Then Hernandez's big hit and Straws big HR in game 7.

The parade.

My moms baked ziti.

Cocaine.

86 was a great summer.

Nope but he played for Marshall and that pic of him in the end zone after he got his bell rung is a classic.

I have it hanging next to Rockwell pic of eddie arcaro holding his saddle getting weighed in.

Also he is still alive.

He does have that one over The Giff.

tommy, maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, but I seem to recall that the first season of Monday Night Football was Keith Jackson, Howard Cosell, and Dandy Don. I think it was season 2 when Frank Gifford came on board.

Reverend, Your memory is working just fine and I stand corrected. Gifford did mention that Keith Jackson came first but he was asked what he thought about Cosell and he said "not too much" which I thought was funny.

tommy, i don't know if in your line of work you ever had crossed paths with Cosell, but to say he was "ego-driven" would be an understatement. A most talented, yet irritating man.

Reverend, I agree! I met Howard on three different occasions at CBS awards banquets and dinners and off camera I found him to be a total gentleman and brilliant. However, on camera he drove me nuts! Another guy who is one of the most humble, giving, and nicest person I have ever met off camera was D*ck Vitale, but on camera he drove me even more nuts! I'm sure we have all listened to various sports announcers that we wished that they would just shut up so that we could enjoy the game. This is the way Vitale came across to me. But with that said, Vitale has given more money to the Jimmy V. Foundation for cancer research than anyone.

Most celebrities (show biz, music, sports, etc.) are entirely different people off camera vs. on camera, for better and for worse.
