I cook from scratch 80% of the time, easy to make stew or one dish meals often. Sometimes meat in one cast iron skillet and vegetables in two more. Had ribeye steaks and three veggies on table in thirty five minutes recently Yes I use canned tomatos and have lots of jars of spices, but avoiding. prepackaged and chemical/presertive/MSG laden items is important. I watch sugar and salt to. They are used, but not abused.
Bread from bread machine is much better than store bought and you can add herbs, spices, and even cereal to make any basic bread your own. Another thread asks what item would you hate to lose most in your kitchen? I would have to say my cookbooks and recipes. All Penzeys Spices books and The Bread Machine Cookbook would be difficult to replace. I always make as written first, then get creative.

::thumbs: I cook from scratch m ost of the time. I learned from country cooking from grandma, I love making soups and stews, italian cooking I learned from mom, mexican I learned frommy ex. Now I eat mostly vegetarian and vegan and I love to play around with old recipes modifying them to be healthier and more tasteful. However I still cook meat for family and friends. I could open a resteraunt!

I love cooking from scratch (nothing coming from a box) but lately I've been so busy with work and my kids I can barely find the time... so im trying to find some fun new things to cook that are not incredibly time consuming... any thoughts?

I cook from scratch every chance I get, but it does get a bit expensive. It's funny that most of the people who can afford to cook and eat a healthy home meal are too busy to do so, thus they end up settling for a fast food burger or a TV dinner. Those of us who have the time to cook can't afford healthy foods, thus we settle for fast food burger or a TV dinner. Kind of a catch 22... kudos to those who manage to find a happy medium.

I'd say 95% of the food I eat I make from scratch.
I buy bagel, tortillas, taco shells, dunkin sticks(which I use as a base for strudel topping on muffins & cakes).
Of course I don't breed my fish, chickens & turkey/turkey products (I don't eat red meats, just poultry & fish.). So, if u want to be technical my ("meats") aren't home made.

Fresh, local and almost always from scratch. Never use boxes or canned food. I am trying to eliminate chemicals from our diet. It takes time to plan and execute, but it just tastes so much better!

Bagels, tortillas and taco shells are soooo easy to make, especially tortillas I can whip up a batch of tortillas in like 5, 10 minutes. I'd be happy to shoot you some recipies if you'd like to try.

Yea... I do all the time! I just made a Coke roast beef in the slow cooker. I put a roast in and pour a can of Coke over and cook on low until done. Then I shred and make either beef gravy from drippings or add bbq sauce. I also made a sugar free apple pie.

I cook from scratch all the time. This way I KNOW whats in there! Sometimes I follow a recipe, sometimes I modify a recipe, sometimes I create my own! That's the most fun. Just last night I had my children over for my daughters birthday dinner (31 years old.....yup still making them birthday dinners!) fresh mottzerella stuffed chicken meatballs with marinara sauce, spaghetti, capreze salad and toasted coconut cake for dessert! YUMMMM!

From scratch as much as possible. It's not as hard as some think. I've learned how to save money and try new things at the same time. I start with whats on sale at the market. . .or in season and just google the items. . . Like simple eggplant recipes. Tonight is eggplant parmesan . .. I got lucky. . . The deli mozzarella was on sale this week too lol. The trick is to use foods you like and keep it simple to start.

98% of the time completely from scratch. Fresh ingredients, you can't go wrong. Still working on baking which is completely opposite of how I cook. Recipes I may read thru, but at most they are a bit of a guideline.

I grew up cooking for a large family, so large volumes from scratch is an easy way to stock my freezer with individual servings. Packaged baking mixes or bake at home frozen products generally don't hold a stick to made from scratch products. Left over cooked meat can be turned into soups and casseroles and frozen for individual meals. Sauces and gravy can be frozen in ice cube trays. Made from scratch enchilada sauce or salsa tastes much better and costs much less than packaged on the grocer's shelf products. A well stocked spice shelf, freezer containers and a little extra time is all that is needed to have home prepared meals ready at the first sign of hunger. The time lost in preparation is regained by having to cook less often and I have a better idea of exactly what is in my frozen home prepared food.
Purchased prepared food is a rare happening at my house, unless it is from the occasional take out menu.

I love cooking from scratch. It lets new find new ways to make things and then you can improve on ur own recipe each time you make it. Then their is the fact of not following any particular guidelines but ur own. And its easy to just forget about everything for and hour or two while you make a pasta sauce from scratch and everything els. I like to put on the music really loud and then jam our when I'm in the kitchen lol. I love to cook wich is why I do it for a living. The pay sucks but its a lot of fun
