I've been thinking of joining the navy for a year or so. Wht are some of the reasons u guys joined the military? And is it a good idea yes or no?

I joined out of family tradition and a desire to do something meaningful. But my reasons are not your reasons and those are the most important. Joining the military means making a lifestyle change and it isn't easy.
In order to make it in any branch of the military you truly have to want desperately to be a sailor, marine, soldier, etc. or you will not be one for long.

If you really want to serve and do some good, go Coasties. They have all kinds of peace time missions such as rescue, smuggling interdiction, boat registration, inspection & safety. They have ice breaker in the Arctic and antarctic. They operate on the oceans, rivers and lakes. You'll probably be locally land based doing daily/nightly patrols.

The service will be what YOU make of it. It can be good and it can be bad. Play the game by the rules and you won't have any problems. Start bucking the rules and you are asking for problems. Get in there and do your best.

Make sure you choose an occupation that translates to the civilian world. That way you'll have a leg up when/if you decide a career isn't for you. Trust me on this one!

Actually I'd say do what you want to do in the Navy. Chosing a NEC/rating only because it translates to a career in the civillian world may not be the right move. You have to love what you do in order to succeed. I wholeheartedly support your decision to join the worlds greatest Navy.

I think it's a very admirable thing to do. One thing though; I don't think you join the Navy for a "year or so". It's a six year hitch. If you join then "gut it out" or don't join.

My experience as a E-8 is that most of the 'good' officers always consulted with the senior NCOs prior to issuing the order of 'make it happen'. True the officers have the rank, but the senior NCOs reflect the hearbeat and soul of the men.

That's true! The NCO's run the Army. The officers are there as "advisors".

Learn how to swim? Seriously, any branch of the military has it's advantages and disadvantages. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. I would look closely at the Coast Guard, their' mission is expanding.

I would definitely say join the military. Look around at each branch first and see what you like about each one. I'm in the Army but lucky enough to have worked with each branch and see the dis/advantages of each. I've lived on an air base and earned the title of shellback in the Navy. Definitely would do it all over again.

Biggest 'downside' to Navy - learning how to not only walk about in a heavy sea, (30 feet plus) but keeping dinner down!!! Once you get those 'sea legs' it's all good!!!

Only thing is, navy, to qualify to wear those dolphins you have to be real good. Apart from UDT/SEAL Teams, those dolphins are the hardest to earn. Not so sure after being surface fleet if I could go for ninety days without seeing the sun!!! Haze grey, underway. All ahead full.

It depends on what you want to do. I wanted to see the world and get an education that I could translate into a civilian job. I'm now a software test engineer on a satellite program.
If you want to get involved in aerospace you'd be better off in the Air Force because of the connections. If you want an education you should go Coast Guard or Navy. The Navy emphasizes education more than anything, it's become a requirement for promotion. The Coast Guard actually has time for it and depends on well educated sailors to do the job of 2 or 3 people.
The Army and Marine Optempo won't allow you to get any education. But you'll enjoy yourself.
I'm retired Navy and wouldn't have done any better by going to college. In fact I wouldn't be where I am if I went to college for aerospace, and I wouldn't have the great stories to relate to my junior engineers.
People just naturally expect something more from a retired NCO and you get more respect in the High Tech industry. You find a lot of retired officers in the business and if you don't have an advanced degree then you'd better be ex military.

It's a great way to see a lot of the world . it also requires dedication so be sure you want to commit to duty. also when you take the G.C.T. test (if they still do that)take it seriously you can get a good education from a good score. anyways best of luck to you

Just be sure you get into a career path that translates to a civilian job. Most Navy jobs do but get into one that has you getting a Secret or better clearance and the world is your oyster. A TS is worth better than 80k a year just by itself.

NOW HEAR THIS: DO NOT allow your "recruiter" to pick your NEC/MOS for you. If you are near any military base, and if not, spend a few bucks and travel to one, and ask for a tour. Get a chance to talk to the service members. Ask what they like best and least about what they do. You will find a full spectrum of like and dislikes. Take notes.
You wouldn't just step out of an airplane into the air without a parachute would you? If you go airborne you just might get that chance! Think you can swim and are "drown proofed"? Spend time in the surf in Coronado. Being in the military is NOT what you see on TV or a video game.

Yup you escorted them on base. I took a recruit to Buckley a month ago and it took an hour to get him on base and he had orders. Admittedly Buckley is an operational site but I can't imagine a Navy base is any better especially when they have Nukes aboard.
I don't want to get into a pissing contest with you sir but unless this young man has an escort he will be turned away by the sentries. He might be turned away anyway unless it's been set up by the PAO.

The Air Force has the best conditions for families. If you are an enlisted person, you will be in the rear with the gear most of the time, because the Air Force sends the officers out to fight.
I take it you are single since you are here. With that, I offer you a word of advice no matter what branch you may choose. Do not EVER marry a whiner. She will kill your career and make you miserable. If she can't leave her momma and her hometown, she is not for you. If she can't manage a broken down car or a sick child, she is not for you.

First - Minimum enlistment is FOUR YEARS; for certain fields you'll need to commit to a SIX YEAR enlistment.
The best rating is Nuclear Power Electronics Technician. The Navy will send you to school for two and a half years and when your first six year enlistment is up, they will give you as much as $30,000 (yup - thirty thousand dollars) to re-enlist for another six years.
Next best rating is Electronics Technician and you get a year and a half of schooling with the same deal on re-enlistment.
For these two ratings, you will need good math and science grades from high school.
