Does anyone else see the irony of calling a front drive vehicle a sport utility any thing? The Chevy blazer and ford explorer I believe are dead replaced by fat low to the ground front drive soccer mom grocery getters to me worthless for work or any sort of rough service or trailer pulling. I for see the only rear drive vehicles on the road soon will be pick ups or the hand full of sports cars that are left. How does everyone else feel about the death of the real SUVs?

Yep! But I would love to have a 1960's wagon ! You could at least pull a trailer enforce the springs and carry a real load.

They only make what sells. Now they are making those AWD (All Wheel Drive) piles because people want a smooth riding car that gets better fuel economy. SUV's have too tough of a vehicle ride, and like gas stations.

I used to have a Bronco 2 with a 5 speed stick shift, manual transfer case, manual lock out hubs, manual pretty much everything. Put a vehicle like that in a showroom today, and it will gather more dust on it than a conversion van.

True KP I understand and even a used explorer or blazer in decent shape is hard to find unless you want to fork out lots of cash. I just hate to see these vehicles go because then you are stuck having to buy a truck and they aren't cheap either. Yes the new SUV piles get great gas mileage and ride like a dream but SUV? What a freakin joke! It's like a car with an identity crisis

Take one of those things off road with a load and it will quickly burry itself or split in two! Someone needs to sue these a** holes and get them to label them what they are SMR's soccer mom rides!

I wouldn't even call Blazer or Explorer and SUV. In my book, there's nothing SUV about a vehicle if it doesn't have a solid front axle.

Don't get me wrong, I had a blazer and liked it a lot. But they were one of the first vehicles to sacrifice balls in the name of comfort and all things soccer mom.

I see your point though. Don't even get me started on the new "Cherokee" "Renegade".

Not only that but making a truck act like a car raises the price tag doesn't it? If I want a f**king car I'll buy one! Sure these things sell but they need to stop calling them what they aren't.

solid front axles have pretty much disappeared, 1/2 ton , and 3/4 ton ford, chevy trucks, and Tahoe's have independent front suspension in all 4x4's and I think they do much better on extremely rough terrain, and mountains. JMo

Ok why did they think getting rid of solid axles was a good idea for any off road vehicle? Does increase clearance right? But is it more durable in rough terrain? HUMERS are independent suspension right? But is a land rover?

independent suspension, gets somewhat better traction on uneven terrain, keeps both front wheels on the ground better, prob not more durable than a solid axle.

I've never really worked in anything with fully independent all wheel or 4x4 drive but my assumption is more difficult and costly another reason to sell it to us or a us to it. If you are carrying a load on rough terrain you can always drive slower and more careful? Every time I off road or haul something I'm not running a race. Yeah I think in actuality a gimmick !

The major reason for the manufacturers converting to IFS is comfort. It's a much more cushy ride than a solid axle. And I suspect easier to manufacture and there's probably the possibility of better parts crossover between models.

A solid axle is much better over uneven terrain. They're generally easier to lift (correctly at least).

I have seen trucks with solid front axles in extremely uneven terrain, with one of the wheels off the ground. I have been driving 4x4's for 56 yrs. I prefer independent front suspension. JMO

That's exactly the reason for a solid front. The axle, and the vehicle, will lift and stay off the ground. With an IFS, you're more likely to drag the front diff or get hung up on something because the axles don't stay in the same plane.

There are benefits to both. But any serious wheeler will tell you to ditch the IFS.
