Hopefully last frost this weekend. I took out the row of boxwoods up front tonight. 20 feet long 24" tall 24" wide.
60 plants in there easy. one row growing under the foundation the other inches away, I only wanted 12,,, Now I know how I will trim the far driveway,,,

                      Freck,, you're on a start-up " Homestead also ?

                      Yep
Only been here a little over a year..
Nobody ever lived on this acreage before
                      Si I started from scratch
                      And I'm still scratching away..
                      I'm retired
So I tinker on the place on days I feel well enough..

It keeps getting a little better and a little better..
I want the front 3 or 4 acres to be Eden...

You making any more progress koz?

I've decided not to do a vegetable garden per say...
I'm spreading the veggies around in the flower beds so hopefully it all blends together and meshes well

I have a happy turtle on a rope swing hanging from the mailbox. Yep it may take a while but I'll be happy and I will get there!
Still working on this water control issue in the front. On the Good side, where I have to raise the soil and build a wall will make a great 20 x 6 bed garden, using the non-contaminated soil from up front. Spot squash plants and that type of thing wherever I decide to, that day!
then I have to get back inside , wouldn't be surprised if I have to pull the sub floors in the affected area from the bloody water
Why did not they fix the water problems

i started with nothing here too...
had 2 bulldozers working for 3 days just to make enough flat ground to get on the place...
took out over 100 oak, pine, and manzanita trees...
had 3 slam n jam loads of composted garden soil brought in...

lots of work over a long period of time...

I was wondering who the question about virgin soil was for?
Certainly not me - since I had all the cat work done 16 years ago and there has not been virgin soil on this place forever?

Some of my fruit trees are blooming
And it's sposed to freeze the next 3 nights

Do I need to cover the ones that only have closed buds on them
                      Or just the blooming ones?

I had to mow around the garden again.
Tried to fire up the tiller and it wouldn't start after 5 pulls so I left it for another time and place...
Supposed to get rain again which is good, but I could only get a small portion of the weedeating done in the orchard and a bunch of other spots! This means at least 5 more days of growing before I can even think about getting back to them!!!

                        Not exactly correct, Koz.

While pottery making was important to Native Americans the Creek, Choctaw, and Cherokee of Western NC were renowned for basketweaving. These items were woven so meticulously and tightly that they were used for many thjngs: storing/carrhing water, storage or foodstuffs, general use. When the insides of the baskets were robbed with bear grease they were completely waterproof.

There were a whole lot more Carolina clay pots in Florida,,,,

                      I'm disabled too
So I truly know the feeling

But anyway ya look at it
You've got a real nice place

                      I'm slow
So of course everything takes so much longer

Everything I do is aimed at the future
                      More output
                      Less upkeep

Fortunately I live in the Ozark mountains so all sorts of rock, stones and pebbles are plentiful and free

So raised beds are simple and easy..some of the stones are very attractive and interesting, so I'm beautifying at the same time..

Right across the fence is my uncles cattle pasture,so manure is plentiful and free.

I raid family and friends flower gardens for bulbs and starts

If I could do like I used to,ID be a hundred times farther along.

But keeping in mind it's all under construction
It's looking beautiful and I'm proud of it

I can't post pics myself, but I'll PM ya some to post for me once we're a little further into spring when things are really going strong

I've got to remember it's only been 6 months, and of course I wish more was done . and money doesn't grow on walnut trees! ( actually it does I just haven't found the right buyer yet even after I use all I want,I've have got more).
I sure am glad I can work on the nasty days and take the nice ones off to work around here.

These are my old raised beds... they lasted about 5 years before they rotted away and I got rid of them...

I couldn't afford good wood for them when I made them. If I could have afforded redwood or cedar I would still be using them...

My raised beds are surrounded in stone
So they are sure to last longer than I ever will
They look more appealing to the eye
And are free and plentiful to pick up at leisure

I may use some whole cedar logs here n there just so they don't all look the same

I bought this chunk of ground because I planned on an earth bermed and covered - house and greenhouse with an actual root cellar - dug into the hillside...

After the D-6 cat ripped off a 9"square steel ripper bar on my ground - we quite trying to dig any further into the ground and the hillside!!!

Tried using a pick and shovel - ended up even trying a chisel and hammer - gave up...

Until one of my buddies rememebered that I had asked him if I could try out his small jack hammer... he brought it over last year and I tried it and it works!!!

Now I just need to get one of my own and then pay my kids to start tunneling into the hill!

I dug the new pond with some plow bits behing the tractor..foot or so of clay
                      Then nothing but rock.
At least it's mainly all smaller stuff that could get carted off to the side with the tractor bucket
One part of the pond has a rock so big
We never did find the others 3 sides of it..
Figured that was deep enough for the shallow end

Some clay and then rocks of all sizes pretty well sums up the makeup of my place...
Just enough dirt to grow grass, and enough trees to not have much grass

Buddy of mine is clearing a property for somebody, chestnuts Hickory all kinds of wood. I can have what I want if I go get it about 50 miles away. no problem I wonder how many pounds I can put it in the truck and it still make it up the mountain. But the real purpose of this post ,, portable chainsaw sawmills. any opinions. I realize the wood waste but the flexibility factor really adds to my interest. a new nice one is 1200 bucks I've seen some used but not as groovy as I want, then again they're only $300. do you guys have any experience with them

I have no experience using one...
I have used a chain saw one - it clamped to the bar of the saw...
Buddy and I spent over a week making 6"x12"x22' beams into 2.75"x12"x22' beams with one...

The chain saw mills Costs more in the long run
You can only strech a chain out so far before it won't stay on the bar..and ripping with then wears em out a lot faster than a crosscut

The initial price of a circular saw mill is of course higher.but they are far cheaper to run
And if ya buy a used one to begin with
Sell it when you're done, and you just got yourself a lot of lumber for mere pennies...

                      That said
Buy a circular mill, then bring it over to my place for awhile before ya sell it!

My log splitter crapped out on me
                      $1300 for a new one
I can rent one for $50 bucks a day.one day a year will split all the wood I need and then some.
                      So
It would take 20 plus years at $50 a year to pay for a new one
Plus I would be responsible for upkeep and repairs..

Just doesn't make any sense to buy one

I got plenty of oak and cedar that would make good boards..

That is another thing about my place...
Not only no useable rocks, but the timber on here is only good for firewood...
I don't think I could find an 8' 2x4 in any of the oak here! Scrub oak... Then there is the pines, none of which are over 40' and are scraggly too...

All of the stuff I jackhammer out of the hillside could be added into a cement mixer - throw in water and some cement and I would have concrete! It's already full of sand and small river rock...

It is damn nice to have plentiful natural resources at hand
But ya do with what ya got and make it work the best ya can...

I've got a deep pond that's a little less than 2 acres in addition to the new one
So I have plenty of water

But I sure wish I had a live spring
Or at least a live creek

My log splitter crapped out on me
                        $1300 for a new one
I can rent one for $50 bucks a day.one day a year will split all the wood I need and then some.
                        So
It would take 20 plus years at $50 a year to pay for a new one
Plus I would be responsible for upkeep and repairs..

Just doesn't make any sense to buy one

If you have a Harbor Freight near, they have an electric splitter cheap.

Put some of that hillside dirt into a quart jar, about 1/4 full of dirt and fill with water shake it up good, if the water looks dirt light brown or darker.... It's to much soil to make quality cement / concrete. You really need good river washed sand gravel for high grade cement that will be structurally sound.

When I built my homestead, I went out (with pick-up) got good sand / gravel deposits from county road sides, where the embankments where sloughing off.

                        Good Luck...

H . Freight , pretty much a 3 use tool, but they're $10 side Grinders will handle an amazing amount of abuse

Don't the big rental companies rent cheaper than buying outright?

You can rent anything, as Freck said,Rent it,,don't worry, use the %!/^&£€% out of it . Just try to get the job done before you kill it,takes to much time to turn it back in for a new one !

                      Interesting, to say the least.

So you have no qualms about renting an expensive piece of machinery, work it till you beat the dogchit out of it, and then cast it aside as if no one else paid out-of-pocket to acquire the machinery IN the first place?

If you had purchased the piece of OT equipment outright, and loaned it to a friend would you want them to treat your property that way?

I don't think so but I could be off base.

                      Not exactly
                      He didn't say abuse it

Takes too long to go all the way back to the rental shop(you are the one paying for transportation and the your paying them rental fees from the time you originally leave the rental yard)
To return broken equipment, get another, drive back to the job site again.

                      Happened to me last fall
                      Rented a piece of equipment.
It broke halfway through the job.pain in the butt, they did upgrade me to a larger machine at no extra cost.other than the fuel and time it took to load, drive to town, back to the farm and unload.

We sure hope they maintain and repair their equipment
The same way they hope we don't abuse it

Exactly. But we will use it at its highest Factory specifications.
Manufacturers do make a specific series for rental purposes.
I'm 250 a day for a small backhoe here. We pay for these things they ain't cheap!

2x 10s and 4 by 6s above my head by myself all day with a four pound Sledge.

I've got to get this kitchen done because then I'll be wholesaling eclair shells,
with a bunch of rainbow sage in them,,
What do they weigh half an ounce Yeah I think I can lift them a whole lot easier

Sounds like your getting a good workout today

I've a few things to catch up on
Then start putting the tractor back together

It's been apart for a couple weeks now
                      So this should be interesting

Just got an old 60's Sears chipper maybe it's been used once 10 bucks. I might have to put some gas in it!!

Cool,, now I won't have to use that burn permit , anything bigger than that will handle is already separated for landscaping
                      , mulched in Maple,,,Free!!

Power company came through here last fall and trimmed they're right of way

So I got several dump truck loads of mulched hardwood..

Coming in all kinds of handy
All the mulch you can handle makes life easier than trying to skimp and scrape, instead of having to by more..

Next year or two my brother n I will have to find a good mulcher

All the beds will be in and done by now
But I like to mulch late fall
                      And again in the spring
