Well right now the supreme court is evenly divided between conservative and liberal justices. For decades it has been conservative by a vote of one. The justice who passed was conservative, ending an era of conservativism. If a liberal justice is appointed it will sway the court in the other direction.

Once again the importance of voting for you your congressional leaders is critical. While the president makes a recommendations for the new justice, it's the legislative branch,i.e., the congress who will vote to approve said appointees.
