Yes fairy...remember the three branches of office...Executive...legislative...judicial....Each in balance theoretically. Of the three, the executive has the least real power. The legislative branch makes the laws and the judicial branch enforces them. In reality, the executive branch is the weakest of all, it merely plays referee...with limited power. Wbat's really scary is that a handful of justices not only enforce the laws of the land but are free to subjectively interperet them as they see fit. And these people are just as politically motivated as the other two brances but posess autonimous power. Now can you see why the next appointee is such a big deal. A much bigger deal than who we elect as president.

Well right now the supreme court is evenly divided between conservative and liberal justices. For decades it has been conservative by a vote of one. The justice who passed was conservative, ending an era of conservativism. If a liberal justice is appointed it will sway the court in the other direction.
Once again the importance of voting for you your congressional leaders is critical. While the president makes a recommendations for the new justice, it's the legislative branch,i.e., the congress who will vote to approve said appointees.
