I love nerdy facts about all kinds of stuff. Share some interesting facts about where you are from, or where you grew up, or where you live now.

My family and I lived in Ocklawaha FL for many years when I was a child. Not much to the town, very small. Had a blinking light, if you missed that blinking light, you missed the town. No movies, no bowling, etc. But the town did have interesting history.

Ma Barker was also known as "Machine Gun Kate. She was believed to be the leader of the 25-member Karpis-Barker gang responsible for 3 kidnappings, 10 murders, and stole $1 million during a three-year rampage, primarily in the Midwest, that began in 1932.
J. Edgar Hoover described her as "the most vicious, dangerous and resourceful criminal brain of the last decade" Ma Barker and her gang (sons) were killed in a rental home in Ocklawaha FL in 1935. I remember as a kid a very old guy would tell the story every year as he remembered. He was Willy, a young guy that was hired by the Barkers as a cook. The FBI found their location and gunfire exchanged almost continuously for hours. The house was riddled with nearly 3,500 bullets in the shootout. The FBI was so fearful of Ma Barker that they sent young Willy in to verify she was dead.

I know the history of my farm and township since the beginning. Actually back to prheistory through geology and anthropology. I have two sites listed in state on my farm for Indian settlements. My barn was built out of a logging raft that came down river, spent the night in the hostel/tavern here and froze in overnight. The brick farm house was built of bricks from the nearby town..one of two brick yards in clay pits. One is no a park with pond. The town here was home to a Fort. And is called Portage because is was a main overland link between the Fox and the Wisconsin rivers. To history buffs, all the stuff I know would be interesting. To the average DHers..not much. So will conclude.

I grew up in Minnesota..."The Land Of 10,000 Lakes"...which actually has more like 100,000 lakes. One-Leech Lake-is aptly named...being full of fresh water leeches. Go in for a wade, or a swim, and you will come out covered in leeches. The best way to get rid of them is to lay on the beach, and let the sun bake them to death...after which they will fall off you. One lake-Lake Itasca-is the source of The Mississippi River. Further south, a small town-Anoka-is "The Halloween Capital Of The World."

The name of the lake should have been a tipoff.

There was one stop light in North Branch back in the day and when the population went down too much they put a hood over it and installed a stop sign.

They used to grow corn in West Saint Paul and the RR came through here before they took up the tracks.

Our house was the last one built on our block.

The smallest dedicated park in the world is at Smith and Bernard. I've never seen anyone set up a lawn chair there.

We live a block away and if it ever warms up to frigid I'll shovel the sidewalk down to the concrete. Too cold now. Hi of -5 on Sunday.

We have four seasons. Summer, summer, cool breeze and summer.
It is usually ridiculously hot -but for some reason I love to work outside when it is 100 plus.
I think I might be addicted to solar radiation.
Fortunately, there are awesome rivers and lakes around -which are often very clear -some spring-fed -in which to cool off.
There are usually three or four taquerias on any business street -which is awesome because tacos are awesome.

Nothing special, unique, historic, or meaningful about Washington DC.

BY the way, the Ma Barker story was made up by the FBI to cover their sloppiness in murdering her due to their ham-handed approach to going after her relatives who WERE actually dangerous.

That is one lake I don't want to swim in. (But I will swim in a lake that have alligators in them. I guess the known is easier than the unknown) But good to know that is a easy way to get leeches off. Thanks for sharing.

Very true that the FBI embellished some of the story, as to be expected. But still debatable. She raised boys that were hellions. She overlooked their crimes an had no problem taking in their criminal friends. Her sons loved her and gave her everything fancy think she wanted (she come from very poor family so Im sure she enjoyed the spoils). While its been said she kept her noise out of the crime planning she no fool, she knew them boys where criminals. She was most often found with her boys, so on that final day she paid the final price. She willing stepped back into the house on that final day. They only found one bullet in her so the boys must of tried to keep her safe during the shoot out.

The Wisconsin Dells area was a tourist destination for Chicago. And some traveled farther north to the Hayward area. The county above me was noted for a body dump. The gangsters would haul the dead body up to there and toss it in the woods. Al Capone had his infamous lodge up north by the border to Canada. It is still there as a resort or such now. My area was known as where the north begins. Now the Dells is called the worlds largest water park. The whole town and adjoining Lake Delton is nothing but miniature golf parks, water parks, resorts and of course the historic Ducks. These were bought up by a guy decades ago when the army dumped them. And turned them into a ride. They are amphibious so the tours consist of trails in woods and into the river and the lake. In summer millions of people go through the towns. In winter the steady population is a few thousand. The main street is wall to wall t-shirt shops. The Dells now are trying to be a art district since they lose tourists to Delton. All inclusive resorts keep the traffic on the strip.
