The stock market isn't for the faint of heart. I've made money doing that, and am willing to take a hit when that happens. It has, I did, but it's recovered. There's loads of firms out there making money, pushing market panic. The idea moving your money around from one place to another, only makes commissions for the brokers. Mine keeps telling me that I should move mine around-I don't listen to her. I AM not her favorite by a long shot.

I also have been associated with the stock market over the years. Got my butt out a few months before it hit the bottom, the mortgage companies started recalling loans and all too many lost their homes. I pulled my stuff because I watched and had this gut feeling that the inflated (hot air) wasn't going to stand the test against real money. Sure given the time it recovers but with my retirement invested in mutual funds which are heavily invested in the stock market, I wasn't comfortable in taking any chances. It was a good decision on my part.

I'm not involved in the research and constant study now to even feel comfortable that I would have the info to manage it.

Dad taught me never invest that which you cant afford to lose. If you cant, stay in a bank. Yeah..that works in todays world. I used to play the stocks. Watched values going up and up. I finally told my husband this is insane. The big boys trade to make a penny and these prices are inflated. I dealt in odd lots and said no way anyone can make money unless trading 1000s of shares at a penny profit. The brokers were making cash, not the little guy. So sold off everything but a couple dogs I keep just for the pretty paper and to tick off the company and put it into mutuals instead. That way pooled can do it. And have done well. I just closed my last CD a couple years ago. So..Mr. Banker, you expect me to let you use MY money and pay me a half percent of interest per year so YOU can make 15% or more? And then have the gall to charge me a fee to maintain any savings account less than 10K? Bite me!

I went to the bank one day and addressed a fee they had thrown on my checking acct. My account was set up in one of their options that based percentage paid on your balance. The balance was a total of all your accts and was tiered. If you had a total balance of say $5K, the percentage was this amount. $10K higher percentage, etc.

I received my checking acct. statement and they had slapped a fee stating that I had dropped below the required balance of my checking acct. WTF.

Went to the bank to see what they had done and why. For some reason they had ignored the type acct. that I had and only looked at my checking acct. balance. The error was corrected immediately.

Next month, same thing. 2ND trip to the bank and I was not to be fooled with that day. Once that charge was returned to my account I asked the teller when they planned to put those things on the door so the customer had to have a quarter to open the door like the pay toilets before they could get in.

I had a savings for the property taxes. It would go up and then down when I took it out. So I got a fee. WTH? Went in and was told because the account dropped below a thousand. Oh..so you pay me a percent of interest to use my money. Then charge me 1.50 a month when under 1K. You want my big money, but not small. Fine. Close the acct. Dont want the small..not getting the big either. Joe has an acct started by mother 40 years ago. He just has left it. Got a fee. Went in..he b*tched them out and they retracted it. He said if they EVER do it again..that acct will be closed. ALONG with the other major ones in their bank.
And now the Potus wants to mess with a law against the banks. Fine..Go back to Glas Stegal then. THAT one worked til Clinton Clinton dumped it. Yep..wanted Hillary in..suuurrreeee.
I am getting fed up with protesters. Especially the paid ones and the ones who apparently dont WORK in the day! I am going to start a protest against protests. Joe said he heard a few states now passed a laws if one accidentally gets run over..too bad.

They saw is let he who is innocent cast the first stone. America acts holier than thou. And yet we have a history of sticking our noses in other countries. Backing leaders the people of that land DONT want. Our CIA trying to assassinate leaders we dont like. The Korean war was wrong..Nam was wrong. Taiwan was wrong. We invaded countries to effect regime change. We dumped leaflets telling native people what WE wanted. We tap phones, read mail, target people, bug hotel rooms. And then when another country does equal, cry fowl. We are hypocrites. And I am sick of protesters who just want to be part of "The Happening" of the moment. DC will do what the elite want and no matter how many march, nothing will change. Anyone remember the boy who cried wolf? And those with legit causes get buried under the idiots who have nothing better to do. Interviews of marchers asked, what are you protesting. Uh..uh..uh..I dont know..something. sigh...

In 1945 two out of every three European Jews had been killed by Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany. (6 million) Oh, the regrets after the war regular citizens had about not resisting, organizing and marching against Hitler in the early days. (1945...not too long ago)

Do I think #45 Donnie is a modern day Hitler? Heck no, he isn't smart enough. Do I think #45 is in bed with Putin? Just about everybody you ask does including our intelligence. Do I think the two of them can do serious harm to our country along with the "bought" Republicans in Washington? Hell, yes, and those millions of marchers do as well. #45 is cozy with Putin for financial reasons and it looks as if he's being bribed and Putin is friendly with Donnie for the power and to further his agenda.

A quick google of the present day resistance movement will tell you their goals. Republican talking points that you hear on talk radio and Fox goes something like this... "most of them don't vote...most of them don't have a job...most of them can't tell you why they're marching...most of them are being paid", you know, the tired old talking points they use every time there is a resistance or march and their loyal listeners believe every talking point they hear because they're too lazy to read independent information about the movement. Way more fun to repeat ignorant drivel.

The movement is about basic human rights...you know little silly things like clean water, clean air, preserving our social security and Medicare, making drugs more affordable, health care for all, not just the wealthy(we're the only industrialized country without it), infrastructure, the woman's right to choose, not a bunch of old farts in grey suits telling her yes she will have that baby if she is raped, or if it has a severe disability, or no, your employer has the right to deny you birth control, yet they pay for men's Viagra...or, preserving your right to vote rather than making it more difficult...get the drift? Little silly stuff. We all have areas under the human rights umbrella that we are most passionate about, so you will get different answers there. It's so frustrating to think millions use their precious Saturdays or other days off work to persist and march, yet if we're successful you people b*tching non-stop about those protester bums will reap the benefits.

Quote from shaggyoledog:
Something I just came across, looking for something else...

Something I've been advocating for years!!!

Canada has rainfall retention ponds... Go figure...

With all the floods we have throughout the US, WE NEED THESE!!!

Not only will they redirect excess rainfall and therefore curtail flooding, but...

That water can be treated and used for drinking water etc. so forth and so on... AND...

In areas like California, it can be used for all the flash fires they have...

Do WE here, in America, have rainfall retention ponds??? NO!

WHY THE HELL NOT!!!

Oh hey genius- What do you think Lake Mead is? Or Wheeler Reservoir? Did you ever look up what the TVA was organized for?
You really shouldn't have taken a nap during history class during grade school.

..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

A retention basin is used to manage stormwater runoff to prevent flooding and downstream erosion, and improve water quality in an adjacent river, stream, lake or bay. Sometimes called a wet pond or wet detention basin or stormwater management pond, it is an artificial lake with vegetation around the perimeter, and includes a permanent pool of water in its design.

It is distinguished from a detention basin, sometimes called a "dry pond," which temporarily stores water after a storm, but eventually empties out at a controlled rate to a downstream water body. It also differs from an infiltration basin which is designed to direct stormwater to groundwater through permeable soils.

Wet ponds are frequently used for water quality improvement, groundwater recharge, flood protection, aesthetic improvement or any combination of these. Sometimes they act as a replacement for the natural absorption of a forest or other natural process that was lost when an area is developed. As such, these structures are designed to blend into neighborhoods and viewed as an amenity.[4]

In urban areas, impervious surfaces (roofs, roads) reduce the time spent by rainfall before entering into the stormwater drainage system. If left unchecked, this will cause widespread flooding downstream. The function of a stormwater pond is to contain this surge and release it slowly. This slow release mitigates the size and intensity of storm-induced flooding on downstream receiving waters. Stormwater ponds also collect suspended sediments, which are often found in high concentrations in stormwater water due to upstream construction and sand applications to roadways.

This country wastes more water than others ever saw. I remember when we had a massive drought and wells were going dry. I thought I would see the day when the river completely dried up. And then drive around and see those damn overhead sprinklers marching across fields of soybeans. They are the most wasteful ever. More water evaplorates than hits plants. Like the lawn sprinkler that is watering the sidewalk.
Cities fight people who eliminate lawns even though they are super wasteful When someone tries to plant prairie flowers instead they get a fine. Vegas cools stores with open doors. Try to make the desert bloom and golf courses MUST be watered. Well..Cali can stop complaining about lack of water this winter. They are getting more than they want. At least some people are getting wise and trying to garden with native plants. Now if cities will go along with it and not listen to the whiner who b*tches cause someone elses lawns has dandelions or creepy charlie in their lawn. I happen to like a field of yellow and if it wasnt for creeping charlie, I wouldnt have anything growing on my sand at all. lol.

I remember when the dim-witted dem.s were in power and passed all kinds of stuff and its come back to haunt them . Over the past few years fema camps have stocked supplies and they gave the president the right to declare martial law All this undermining could lead to free room and board at his whim . Most smart farmers do irrigate at night. The really smart ones keep tabs on their rain gauges. Invariably, the anal city folk that have to have their lawns just so. They are huge water wasters. Then they dump tons of fertilizer, and other crap on them, only to have that kill the grass. I never water, or cut grass short. My lawn is the last one that turns brown, when it gets dry. Then it doesn't get mowed at all.(Hooray!!!) Creeping charlie is in my yard-damm I wish that stuff would grow faster!

I eliminated most grass around the house. One small patch that could be called lawn by the woodshed. I ignore it and once or twice a summer weed wack it down. Now sedge has started towards the barn. I used to keep that nice clean sand. But, letting it grow. Pull out weeds and see what happens. If I get fed up with it, spray it out. No mow, just falls over. I see lawns as an abomination. And people go nuts...water, fertilize, weed, mow and repeat. Then b*tch cause they have to mow it again. Well..stop feeding it then! A neighbor farm down the way..I swear if ONE blade of grass DARES rise up..the whole yard gets mowed to a half inch. I lost the grass behind the barn due to a damn tenant who kept mowing. I told him the sand cant take it. Mow once a month. So now am planting creeping red fescue to hold the hill. It only grows to 4 inches so no mow. And hardy. I turned most of the house area into flower beds of perennials. I buy cheap mixes and broadcast. Want to sprout? Good. Want to grow? Good.Want to croak. whatever...Want water..nah. It will rain. Maybe watered once every 5 years of a bad drought only.
Creeping Charlies real name is Gill over the Ground. It was brought here by Europeans to be used to make beer. I think it is so pretty in bloom. I like yards you can eat. lol.

We used to celebrate Abes B and Georges B. But, that wasnt exciting. So combine them into Pres day and THEN we get a THREE day weekend! To celebrate...sales and getting drunk. Scanner last nite was calls for drunk drivers, domestic fights and general fights in bars. Everything in this country is just an excuse to shop and eat and drink. Bet lots of younguns have no idea what Pres day even is. Uh...ALL Presidents..cause they were?

Greece is due for another bail out from the EU. And Greece hasnt done any of the stuff they need to do. They want out ,maybe, of the EU. That way they can continue to pay pensions of 80% of wages. Work abbreviated hours. Take extended vacations. And have 25% or more un-employed, pay no taxes and squander money hand over fist. And they resent the EU telling them to cut back and be austere. Gee...I think it would be wise to hand them more money. Can I have some too?

Reading the news these days is like following a soap opera; lI guess that's what sells ads.

Generally, Trump grabs the first 5 of 7 items.

As if nothing else going on in the world such as:

the UK's new rime minister...and Canada's as well.

The conversion of each Mexican state to cartel owned states.

The collusion of the American Rifle Association in providing massive amounts of
weaponry to the druglords.

El Salvador's highest murder rate in the world and it's causes.

The assasinations by Kim Jung Il (North Korea) of any potential
perceived threats to his leadership.

Ditto for Putin.

The coming extreme famine in South Sudan.

The commercialization of Africa by China.

The international response to Trump.

The gradual taking control over Hong Kong by China.

The grabbing of the South China Sea by the Chinese
including actually making islands to claim soverinty and fishing rights.

The melting of the North Pole.

European trends towards right right wing fascism.

The Serbs about to start yet another war.

The nearness of a potential nuclear war started by North Korea.

There is life outside of Trump.

.

I read the Economist. And there is crap across the globe. It seems like no country is without problems. Some worse than others. Some made by themselves.. some by the rich. And if you study history, the world has always has these messes. Humans have not evolved that much. The base of life is to have your needs met and to live in peace and love. But, never have humans had much luck at that. Either nature slaps them down or their own kind. Sad.

How is it that liberals can be so oblivious to reality?

another one of their overuses of alternative facts or as is being called today...
FAKE NEWS is they call trump 'hitler' or hitler like.

liberals should take note that the ONE they identify as 'hitler' is actually the ONE
who defends israel.

The joke is they ask the opinion of illegals or family members how they feel about the deportation. How come they never ask a legal who has worked hard to get here and lost work to illegals how they feel? And how come they never fine the employer who hires the illegal and pays zilch so they can get away cheap?

The larger city near here started talking of becoming a "safe city" about 10 years ago so illegals flocked. Now, can't get into the ER at the state University (medical school) nor the dental clinic because there's no room for appts. They even furnish interupters. Now with Trump and all the talk and promises of deportation this city is denying the "safe city" and mayor stating that to be one they had to declare and be registered as such, of which they aren't. Does it really matter as long as this city turns it's head and not see them among the population. Bunch of bull.

But will say this in support of the Mexican people. They first came to this area during the tobacco industry when farmers couldn't beg, borrow, or steal anyone else to do the labor jobs. These people will work until they drop whereas the locals wouldn't work in a pie factory if they could eat all they wanted. NOPE, state makes it too easy for welfare if you are unmarried, a bunch of screaming kids, and shacked up. These have tatoos all over them with piercings to match and every damned one has a free cell phone.

OOPS, should have gone to the gripe thread.

Isnt half of politics griping? LOL. I grew up around migrant workers..the kids went to my school. There was a muck farm in the township. Every summer they came north to work. And into the fall or early spring so the kids came to my school. They got their work permits and went around the states as the work offered. Often they returned to Mexico and often renewed the permits. No problem. The farms had housing for them..good or bad. We couldnt believe what happened. One girl was our age...13. She had been there the year before along with her two male cousins..one younger and one older. He ended up in our class due to the broken education they got moving all the time. So that year she told us she was PG. by her cousin. She was happy and in mommy mode. They were going to get married. We were little girls at 13 in the country in 63.. We couldnt grasp the idea of sex much less being PG at that age.
They grew up faster than we did.
So they worked hard. And were able to handle work that would have put the rest of us on the ground. And they did it the legal way and were welcomed. No attitude, no free rides, no thinking they should get anything more than they deserved and earned.

I've seen several news stories about illegals coming into this country. They got jobs, built a life, never committed a crime. Fake news keeps telling them that all will be deported. Last I checked, they were called dreamers. Trump hasn't decided what to do with them. He's after those involved in criminal activity. He's said so. It's all to clear that Fake news seems to leave out that little detail, that the hard working, clean living illegals aren't being sought. Whatever makes Trump look bad is what they talk about. And if it doesn't sound bad-they will make it.

What I've noticed since Trump took office is all the agenda he laid out during the election that made us all hopeful again are things that he can't do alone. So when his plans are blocked by the other powers that be he can't be blamed. Wonder if he or whom it was that chose his campaign agenda. Sure hit the mark to the American citizens for what he planned. Also wonder it the tunnel rats are headed back south through all those zillion dollar tunnels they dug? THEN....who in Texas, AZ, and Washington are sweating it because the drug $ will not be in their pockets?

He has done more in the first month than any other Pres has done. I see media now, like the National Enquirer. If you cant make it up, then just twist it to make it seem important. There is lots on you tube of people who agree with him. Like Negros and legals who say why do illegals have more rights than them.

National media has become the tabloid rags. If you need to fill the news, take things out of context and make it sound like you want. Push the sensational and ignore anything that doesnt fit your agenda.
There are you tubes of Negros who are b*tching about the status being given to illegals and refugees. They see it as another way to put them back to second class citizens like before. One lady said she is not allowed to help out her family in New Orleans and yet illegals get welfare and send money out of the country. Not sure of how she means but it is the truth. I see it even locally with the tourist town. They are quasi legal though. The family joins up and gets the cash to send some members to the Dells. They buy a hotel or motel or attraction. They have visas that allow them here for 7 years. So for 7 years they send money home. At the end of the 7 years, a new contingent comes here and the first go home. So decades pass of foreign owned businesses that pay only the minimum they have to and send the rest out of country. Due to our laws, they are exempt from many taxes as foreign nationals.
I watched bits of the Oscars and gave up because they were intent on politics. Where do some actors get off thinking they are the voice of the rest of us.

The reason I can't watch the awards shows is because the actress' are in competition to see how little fabric they can drape in. Can't they see their droopy boobs and the cleavage is non existent, yet the gown is cut to the naval.

Most copy and paste articles are written by professional journalists...don't show your ignorance. I don't care to read long copy/paste on DH, but care less to read scatter-brained ramblings such as yours.

I admire a great vavavoom cleavage. But, agree with Sankie. When your boobies are hanging sacks, that is not a view to show off. Better to wear a higher neck and push up bra. I watched the local news and they had a fashion critic gal on. Critiquing gowns. And I thought this is who critiques? Her hair looked like she hacked it off with a butcher knife. The top she wore was kinda of lacy but short sleeved sack and some blah pants or skirt. And a face that was not going to turn heads. I wonder often why women wear some of the clothes they pick. Like in resale..one items is how could she part with it? And another is what the hell was she smoking when she bought it..often tags still on. I have found the best way to decide on clothes is take a picture of you in it. Better than a mirror. I have done it and seen a pic and thought..what was I thinking? DUMP it!
I didnt watch much of it because of all the political crap. Did people ever think there is a time or place? Gee lets discuss those hemorrhoids at her wedding reception. Be sure to bring that issue up at the Thanksgiving dinner. Some people cant miss a chance to flap their lips when a camera is on them. Guess what actors and actresses..we dont care about your political views...only reason you are up there is because of your acting.

Watched the congress address. I am so sick of the jerks of both parties that sit on their hands unless THEIR chosen one is pres. Get over it. Congress is supposed to respect POTUS and support for the people. Not their own agenda. Like a bunch of children when they dont get their own way.
On the flip side..it is an hour address. And ends up two cause everytime something is said they like..clap clap, stand up clap clap. Geeze...if I was pres I would say, please hold applause til the end. Or something really important like honoring someone. I...clap clap...think..clap clap....that the world...clap clap.ARGH! What is the speaker..a child playing ball that needs constant praise!?

I dont worry about the end. For one thing, too old to have to worry. And another..our country has muddled on for over two centuries..for better and worse. And bottom line is the rich need us peasants to provide what they need to enjoy their ivory towers. So they will always toss crumbs down hill to the peons. As much as they bleed us, they realize they do need us. Just like slaves.

Another joke march. And then they go back to kowtowing to men, jobs, kids and whatever. Women outnumber men on earth..so why dont they stand up to them and make things change. Bullcrap.
I see the new invasive TSA pat downs now. And wonder...suicide bombers plan on dieing. So how can TSA fight tampons, diapers, ostomy bags, dentures, padded bras, silicone boobs and butts.....Maybe that guys glass eye isnt? And if they use the back of the hand, then it doesnt count as copping a feel?

I wish the wire tapping accusation had not been made. This may be the major issue that sticks and we have a new president whether or not some agree with him holding office, so wish he would make a good reputation for himself and for this country. Just hate to see him loose support from his advisor's etc.

What gets me is how the press harps on the same stuff over and over and over. No matter what he does...I find it refreshing that he is real. Does, says, acts and tells those who dont like it ...tough shit. I am sick of glib tongue Barnums who practice in a mirror to look honest and trust worthy while speaking with a forked tongue.

With all the noise about Trump, I can't help but wonder what it would be like if MZ. Clinton was in the oval office. Would it be the same old political sweeping under the rug and turning a blind eye to the issues that Trump put forward and called it by it's real name.
