I read lots of books and I am frugal.
I now purchase my books at the Salvation Army Store or Goodwill Store. I get paperbacks six for $1.05 or one hardback for $1.05. Wow...a bag full of books for five bucks.
Some advantages to doing this. It will get you out of a reading rut - same writer or genre every time. You will rediscover old classics and find some wonderful writers and books that you would normally not read or purchase.
Doing this I rediscovered Nitzsche and Sartre, Plus I discovered Tony Hillerman.
My $5 purchase last week included:
The Use and Abuse of Biology - Marshall Sahlins.
She Flew the Coop - Michael Lee West.
White Fang - Jack London.
Summer of the Monkeys - Wilson Rawls.
Being and Nothingness - Sartre.
The Screwtape Letters - C.S. Lewis.
The Birth of Tradegy and The Genealogy of Morals - Nietzsche.
Norse Magic - D.J. Conway.
The White Hotel - D.M. Thomas.
And sixteen other books.
Fun stuff.

I usually purchase my books from Barns and Noble just because i like new books. But i also enjoy going to antique stores. They aren't always the cheapest, but they have first editions and hard covers with sweet designs sometimes.
P.S. "The Birth of Tragedy and Geneology of Morals" is great, your going to enjoy those!

I am a library fan. I read the New Yorker and San Francisco Chronicle book reviews, then order the books via the
library. The only books I do buy are crochet books, and those I either buy at Borders or order at local bookstore.

You can buy used books for very little plus the shipping. Other than that I go to Borders and this book store in Decatur Illinois called the book barn. They sell used and new and you can trade in books for credit.

I buy some books online, and some at the local used book store, but my very favorite place has got to be Goodwill. Although their prices have gone up in recent years, they still offer a little bit of everything. And the fact that sometimes its all a jumble makes it a totally fun, serendipitous treat. You really never know what you will find there! I've seen everything from local history to books on Zuni Indian religious fetish objects. It really is amazing what you may find there. And you are supporting agood cause as well!

I usually buy my books from Amazon because they have what I want and I don't have to go anywhere. I've bought used books as well as new and all have been in great shape. If you go to a store usually they don't have what you are looking for and if you order it you have to wait and make a second trip. What's the sense in that??

I prefer to get my books in used bookstores rather than buy them brand new at a chain store. After all, they aren't automobiles. There is something very rewarding about rolling up one's sleeves and just rooting around in a bunch of old books. Plus, old books have a "patina of love" to them that new books simply do not possess fresh off the shelf. Books need to have been read (well-read?) and they need to change hands and travel a bit. They might have torn covers or the odd old postcard from Israel might tumble out of them (which was actually the case with my tattered old copy of "Pnin").
Beyond the immediate satisfaction of hunting for old books, there is also the added benefit of frugality, I suppose. There is nothing wrong with ponying up for a new book (those deluxe editions of "Lord Of The Rings" are not cheap) and the odds of ever finding an OED in a used book store are pretty slim ... at least in my experience. But for my part I'll always enjoy the slightly dank, pulpy feel of a used bookstore to the sheen of a retail chain.
In the end, I just love buying books! It hardly matters where.

No one's mentioned my two favorite sources:
On-line I use Abebooks.com when I'm looking for specific titles. I saved about 80% on textbooks last semester through them. They have a database of books from thousands of bookstores all over the country (and overseas). They also have a marvelously specific search engine and, when you've found a book you *have* to have, you can browse that seller's store for other books to aggregate and save on shipping. There are tens of thousands of books on all subjects for a buck. Abebooks is usually cheaper than eBay, when you include shipping, and you are *sure* to get what you want.
When I'm just in the mood to buy books in general or on specific topics, I go to the Friends of the Library sale. Almost every library has them. Most sell once a month, quarter, or year, but in my area, I have one that sells racks of books on their sidewalk for 50 cents a grocery bag full--or three bags for a buck. They don't get much cheaper than that. They are open three days a week. Inside the store, they have books, tapes, records, and sheet music of all ages from recent bestsellers to 100-year-old first editions. Most, except for the latter, go in the 25-cent to $1.00 range with the larger, more comprehensive works (like a complete encyclopedia set) going for $5-10.
The local community college library has a room full of books at 25-cents per paperback (5 for a dollar), or 50-cents for a hardcover. Outside, they have a few dozen bin boxes of mixed books, softcover and hard, for $1.00 per bag.
I also like to cruise parking-lot flea markets and garage sales just before closing and say, "What'll you take for *all* those books. I sometimes get them for free, and often for a dollar or two a box. They were just going to toss them or donate them to the local library--for their FotL sales. I just saved them either trouble or storage. ;P

Prarie Fire, tobbaco, and Chapman Street second hand books, (all one store) E-bay, Amazon, and Barnes and Nobles both can hook you up to used books, I think one of the best buys I ever got in used books was the children's book Everybody Poops, not only did I get a deal, two like new books plus shipping was 6.00 , but my grandkids don't have to wear diapers anymore, they're expensive. Those kids were totally influenced to be potty trained.

I read so much that I will buy a book anywhere. If it's a particular book I'm wanting, I go to Borders or Barnes & Noble. If I'm just looking for a read, Salvation Army Thrift Store and Dollar Tree are both good sources. Also, I try to hit the public library book sales.

Quite diversified if I may say so.
I do the same. Thrift stores, yard sales, the library.
I am stuck in a rut of similar genere (Grisham, Deaver, Rule, Hoag, etc. But it's the escapism I like) Ocassionally, I have to get my "feet back on terra firma" with, say, Edward Abbey or Scott Peck or even the Dali Lama.
I have no favorites except for the writers that compel me to turn the next page.

I used to buy quite a few of my books from Amazon.. But , this past year I joined paperbackswap.com.. What you do is start off listing a minimum of 10 books that you are willing to swap with other members. Once a member requests a book and you ship it , you will receive 1 credit.. With that credit , you can request a book of your own. I absolutely love it... I have saved an incredible amount of money by swapping instead of buying.. The only cost to you is the USPS shipping cost .

I buy books anywhere I see something interesting, but we have an outlet store called Ollie's that has books really cheap and I love to go there specifically to look for books. I am also a yard sale junkie, and those are great places to find books!

I get the newly published at a discount book seller. Often titles there may not be available and I am stuck with high priced Borders. My fav spots are this outlet called Ollie's. Brand new and often newly published. If a place goes out of business then these guys buy up inventory items. Housewares..books. I got a nice new hard back that was on the "new features" table at Borders for 3.00. Saved 24.00! Liked it.
Mostly Salvation Army (cheaper than our goodwill), then Goodwill, then autistic "Good Deals". A

I love when the library starts paring down its contents to make room for new and they sell all the older books. All the thrift stores here have great books - Salvation Army, Goodwill, Rescue Mission, Christian Charity Center, etc. Also Amazon and EBay have good deals on like-new used books which are still in hard back and are pretty expensive at the book stores. Yard sales, too. I've learned not to lend books I love and want back.

There are no book stores within 60 miles. All my books are mailed to me by the SE Libraries system and specially from Valliant, OK. They are wonderful people who choose my books for me and send me 8-10 at a time with no due date. They have done this for years. (I read everyday but I am a really slow reader with great comprehension skills).
It is like I am actually there as the stories happen rather than being apart and just a witness to the story line).

Target, WalMart, Kroger. I always buy paperbacks. I like new books, so I don't get them from the library.
There's something about the smell and feel of new books! A new adventure that no one's taken before me. I don't even exchange books with other readers. I sometimes give them to others, but I don't want theirs. Just like clothes. I would never buy second hand clothes!
