Yes, the goal in golf is to shoot a score as low as you can. Shooting par golf is 0. Less than par is a minus score. Par is the number of shots an average professional player will hit to play a hole.
Slap me and call be dumb, but does each hole have a "par" or is each hole on the course the same "par"?

Each hole had par determined by the course. Generally, par on a hole is split up by giving two strokes to put the ball in the hole, and one to three strokes to get to the green. Championship courses generally have par 3's, 4's or 5's. A par three may have total length of 110 yards (+- 50+ yards). That means one shot to hit the green, and 2 puts. A par 4 allows 2 shots to get to the green and two puts to make par. A par 5 allows 3 shots to get to the green and two puts to make par. Par 4s are generally total length of 300 yards (+- 100+ yards), and Par 4s are generally total length of 400 yards (+- 100+ yards). Beginner courses are called Par 3 or Executive Courses. A par 3 course is all par 3s, an Executive Course has par 3s and 4s.

Ernie Ells and Rickie Fowler are struggling to make the cut shooting an 80 yesterday. Ernie Ell had a heartbreaking 6 put for a 9 on the first hole (see link below for more details). That would ruin your day. Bubba Watson shot a 75 yesterday, which makes him in danger of missing the cut.
Jordan Spieth led the first day with a 66 to lead the pack by three strokes. Congrats! Can he win back to back Masters?

Phil Mickelson self imploded on the back 9! I don't think he made the cut.
Watson had a chance but he missed too many makeable putts. He will be missed.

He can use it, he just can't put it in his belly or "ground" the club.

I agree. It looks like we have a great group of young players. If you look at the world top 5 to 10 players, they are highly talented and lots of different personalities for drama on the course.
Tater:
I never expected such a total breakdown form Spieth. He proved the saying that the Masters starts on the tenth hole at Augusta on Sunday. Spieth bogied both 10 and 11, Quadrupled the 12th hole, and bogied the 17th hole, i.e. a total breakdown. His post reviews were very telling. He is highly competitive, and does not have an advanced mastery of the mental game that I think many of us assumed he had. None the less, he is a great player and now we know he is human. LOL. He led the Masters tournament for 3.5 days, which would be a lifetime accomplishment for any of us reading this post! I was hoping for an American to win, but hey, the game was created in Great Britain.
Cup:
Langer is very short. He has been of the golf channel a lot this week and you can see him next to the taller TV commentators. For his age and height, he is a great driver of the ball.
Langer is a great player who struggles with his putter at times. He has won many majors, both on the PGA and Champions/Senior Tour. I thought he was back to the regular putter this year. I have played 99% with the regular length putter. Putting is the best part of my game. I bought a long putter about 15-20 years ago when my PGA Instructor said the long putter was "like cheating." I found it was better on the long puts, but worse on the short putts, with a net push, or no benefit for me. The yips or a putting breakdown, is a mental issue in my mind and buying a new putter is really not the answer. One time I missed a 2 foot putt, and tensed up the next two footer and missed again and for the rest of that and the next round. I broke this issue by mentally putting the 2 footer in 10 times as my golf partners putted. This broke the cycle by giving me confidence and allowing me to relax while putting the 2 footer.

This summer's Olympics will include golf after a 100 year absence. The following article was on Linkedin by Rodrigo Brancatelli, senior editor at LinkedIn:
Follow
100 days to Rio: If Brazilians succeed, it will be against all odds.
Apr 28, 2016198,771 views1,091 Likes201 CommentsShare on LinkedInShare on FacebookShare on Twitter
SÃO PAULO – The Olympic stopwatch is already ticking for Rio 2016, but the odds are against success for Brazil. With 100 days to go until the opening ceremony, the country is literally paralyzed and nearing a state of social collapse, with a deep funding crisis that could make it difficult to carry out basic functions and the government engulfed in a corruption scandal. By some measures, Brazil is in its worst recession since the 1930s. We don't even know who is going to be president in August – as you may have read here, these dire circumstances will likely lead to the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff.
Brazil is basically melting down, to be completely honest. To make matters worse, there's the Zika virus outbreak. In just over two months, Brazil recorded 91,387 probable cases, as well as a rise of chikungunya and dengue, diseases transmitted by the same mosquito. According to the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, Rio de Janeiro holds the sad record, with 25,930 patients with a probable case of Zika.
Let me see, what else...
The corruption scandal implicated Odebrecht, a construction company tasked with half the building projects for the Games. Its owner, Marcelo Odebrecht, is now in prison. There are others too, like OAS. Eleven workers have been killed on these projects so far.
A bike lane was smashed by giant wave last week, killing two more people.
The opening of two Holiday Inn properties has been postponed until 2017 and not even Donald Trump's fancy hotel is ready yet.
Brazil's government announced it is cutting the security budget by more than 33 percent.
Tickets sales are worryingly sluggish: last week, only 60% of tickets for Olympic events and 22% for Paralympic events had been sold.
Brazil's poster boy, swimming champion Cesar Cielo, failed to qualify for his home Olympics.
Oh, and in Guanabara Bay, where sailing events will be held, the water is dangerously polluted.
But don't you think for one second that the first-ever Olympic Games held on South American soil will not be great. On the contrary. When Brazilians succeed, it is against all odds. And there are plenty of reasons to believe that this carnival of unusual problems will be forgotten in August: Rio de Janeiro is already rehearsing, preparing, training, protesting, adapting, anticipating, grooming, hardening and willing to write one of the most important chapters in its history.
My optimism has its reasons. The city government’s monthly update on construction progress shows that 12 venues are now at least 95 percent complete. 95 percent! That is a lot better than London 2012, Beijing 2008 or Athens 2004 three months before their Games. Barra Olympic Park, which will be the heart of the Games with its nine venues hosting 16 Olympic and nine Paralympic sports, is now 98 percent complete. Test events have been held in more than a dozen sports from tennis to mountain biking.
After the doping scandals in China and Russia, there is also high hopes that the Games can reacquaint the world with sports' good side. Track star Usain Bolt of Jamaica will aim for Olympic golds in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100-meter relay. In swimming, Michael Phelps is back and will try to win five golds. Rio could also be the final chance of Olympic glory for icons like Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah. If that is not enough, a refugee team will compete for the first time in the Olympics.
The Games could be a much needed morale booster for Brazilians and bring economic benefits to Rio, with unparalleled opportunities for businesses. From official sponsors like Nike (for the first time since 2000) to small hostels and trendy restaurants, the Olympic Games are an irresistible opportunity for brands to captivate consumers – official Rio 2016 products are expected to generate about $260 million in sales within Brazil alone, with 30 percent of these sales attributed to international visitors.
And we have done this before. In 2014, with only four months to the World Cup, furious demonstrators took the streets against FIFA in all major cities and gave second thoughts even to the most hopeful and confident Brazilians. There were rumors that the US could take over hosting the tournament, in case of emergency. But besides a 7-1 loss against Germany, everything went more than fine.
That's our main reason for optimism this time – the German Olympic football team is not that good.
At least I hope.
We Brazilians always hope.
Some golfers are concerned about the polluted water in Brazil, and note the water hazards on the golf course. I guess there will be no fishing for lost golf balls????

I don't understand why they ever picked that location!
The country is polluted and the people are poor.
They will have plenty of wasted buildings once the Olympics have left.
They have told the athletes to stay in the village and avoid the locals for fear of being robbed.

The good news is that it is always darkest before the dawn. The Olympics is a giant World undertaking. Many of the Olympics were in trouble just before the opening (LA 1984, Russia, etc.) and some how they happened. The world community pitched in to get it going. My big fear is terrorism this year, and it happened in the past (Israeli team hostage massacre during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich) A friend of mine wrote a book about a Marathon runner who made it to the 2016 Olympics. The ending involves a terrorism threat at the games, but I won't give away the ending. The book is titled, The Runner, by Lloyd Wendel Cutler. The book starts slow, but before you know it you can't put it down. It can be bought on Amazon.com.
So what country do you think will win the Olympic Golf competition. I think the Gold Metal may be between the US and Northern Ireland.

The key information to answer the question of who will be going to RIO is from the LPGA quote above:
Golf returns to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1904 in Rio. Players on both the men's and women's side of the game will be fighting for one of 60 spots in their respective fields.
Format
Players will compete for their country in a 72-hole individual stroke play competition. In the event of a tie for first, second or third place, a play-off or multiple playoffs shall be conducted to determine the gold, silver and bronze medal.
Qualification System
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has restricted the International Golf Federation (IGF) to an Olympic field of 60 players. The Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings will be used to determine the Olympics golf rankings. The top 15 world-ranked players will be eligible for the Olympics, with a limit of four players from a given country. Beyond the top 15, players will be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top 15. The qualification period ends July 11, 2016.
From Dave:
This means that the max number of players from any country will be 4.

I am not 'stout' enough to play football.
I am not tall enough to play basketball.
I can kick anybody in the shins but soccer is not my sport.
I have sneakers but I get a stiff neck playing tennis.
I played bocce ball but I walked too much.
I love baseball and all those sliders.
I never played golf cause it seems silly.
So.... for a person who likes to play with balls what sport is left?

WOW. That is a tie for the course record. Congrats Jason. I assume we will see him at the Olympics this year as a worthy opponent to the USA. McIlroy shoots a 64 on Friday. Ernie Els opening round of 66 indicates he may be a factor at the US Open this year playing at a course where he won the US Open. Els played the round with only 24 putts!!! Should be a great moving day????
