I know this isn't going to be on topic but ...
If the price of water/sewage service in California is going to increase in cost....
But the service is going to be reduced by 25 percent....
Yet the state is lowering the water table due to the draught and re-establishing draught resistant lawns of the former shore areas......
Doesn't this mean that residents aren't going to be able to afford to use toilet paper when they take a crap?

How much should I pay a handyman to fix/replace a Masonite panel on the outside of my mobile home. I also need my gutters cleaned and sealed, as they leak, and there's one gutter that is not long enough on one corner of the house, causing water to rot out that corner of the house, so that area needs to be repaired/replaced also. I was quoted $550.00 total, labor and materials, how does that sound? I find it very difficult to know about these things, how much is proper and how much might be overcharged?

mshope, you can post anything here besides gas prices as I started this thread.
As for your question.
First I would get at least more estimates for the work you want done.
Question them, have everything in writing with the cost of labor and material.
What has to paid down, usually 1/3 or a 1/2 down rest when completed.
What is the warranty?
How many days to complete?
Any thing at the BBB about the company?
Have insurance?
Ever been sued?
Take pictures of before and after.
Watch them do the work. Ask questions.
Yesterday gas in the city of Erie was $2.59 gallon, has been for months.
I went to Waterford, 10 miles south of Erie and got gas at $2.21 gallon.
This morning the gas in Erie was down to $2.37
That's a drop of 22 cents a gallon.
I have never seen gas drop by that much in one day.

I think the first estimate is probably pretty close if it includes the repair of the damage to the home from the water.....
As far as anyone taking advantage of you being a woman, I would put a ring on your ring finger that could pass as a wedding ring or engagement ring..... I have my single mom daughter do that when I can't be there to deal with things for her as her dad. It is a sad commentary on society that people can't be trusted to be 100% honest and not try to take advantage of someone. If you can say it without choking on the words, advise the contractors that you will have hubby review the proposal and let them know. It would be nice to have a friend over for coffee when they are supposed to come for the estimate.
Geez, I think I sound like a protective father..... but it riles me to no end when someone tries to scam a woman because they think they can.

As far as using a wedding ring YEAH, I've done it many times. What contractors usually don't take into consideration is that when a woman needs something done she usually has her homework done in advance and is probably more in tune to the situation than they expect.
Suggestion: Take the measurements, photo's of the house, etc. to a gutter company and get a quote for new gutters. Then....compare to repair cost. From what I've found guttering isn't the most expensive thing to do for a house.

Gas price jumped 30 cents a gallon on Thursday. Went from $2.29 to $2.59 in about 10 minutes, all over town. Do they have a common website to insure one doesn't get a penny more than they have on their pumps? Used to be the gas prices couldn't change until a delivery was made and then based on what they paid for it. Now, when one goes up so does the others and the trucks don't all get to the tanks at the same time.

Our gas jumped on Thursday too...I was going to fill up on Wed at 2.39....then it jumped to 2.49...but I do need to fill up the next time I leave home... maybe it will drop again after the weekend...

Thanks everyone who responded to my question. I did find a handyman to do my repairs. I got my 2 side panels & the rotten board under my eave repaired. He also extended the short gutter that was causing the problem at the corner of my house. He also trimmed a tree branch for me, and replaced a vent cover. He charged me $345.00 for all the repairs and it took him about 7 hrs to do it. I feel I got my $$$ worth. He did a good job.

Here the gas is $2.22 per gallon. That's at the Walmart, where the gas is usually cheaper. Sam's club is even cheaper, at $2.19 per gallon.

The gas prices are opposite here. They start increasing about three weeks prior to a holiday. Jumped .37 cents a gallon at one time last week. Now up to $2.69 and primed for $2.89 by Memorial Day. Will at least go up another 10 cents.
