I get tired of every do-gooder thinking they can make a perfect world if only. A symbol is just that..a convenient symbol. Depriving someone of a symbol is not going to make them a loving kind person. They will be the same minus it or just find another. I am not Christian. Do you see me picketing a church for displaying a cross at Easter or nativity at Christmas? Do I yell at someone who is wearing a cross necklace or tattoo. No. I dont care. Means nothing to me. If someone wants to decorate their yards with crosses and bleeding hearts and stand outside quoting the bible... so what. I can walk away. I dislike the fact that government meetings start with a prayer. Separation of church and state. So be it. I stand there and think about something else. A stock car race starts with the Star Spangled banner. I find it an insult to the flag to be part of a silly sports event. So be it. Not my call. I dont go knocking on a door to b*tch them out because their flag is out in the dark or rain. Not my business. The flag is not to be worn as ornament. Dont see me accosting someone with a t-shirt with the flag on it.
We have become a nation of but-in-skis.

You may want to ask Holocaust survivors if a symbol is just a symbol. For some reason, Germany decided morally, it was the right thing to do to take Hitler's Swastika flag down from Government grounds rather than allowing her to wave to "preserve history". Rather than blather, you may want to ask and really listen to descendants of slaves, or Blacks who sat in the back of the bus in the South until the 60s, what that symbol means to them. Of course taking the flag down won't make the haters loving people, I agree, but this isn't about them! It's about achieving peace and harmony and showing love to the offended with one simple act. (Strange how the Confederate flag was not flown on Government grounds until after the civil rights movement in the 60s and the Blacks were allowed to sit anywhere on the bus or at the lunch counters...yet some claim it is all about preserving history.) I agree that church and state should be kept separate and I get that you aren't a Christian which I respect, but I don't get your comparing the Confederate symbol-which is being abused by haters today to the Christan cross...a symbol of love and hope. I don't think you are comprehending too well if you think the average citizens who voice concerns about the Confederate flag give a rat's a** if people want to fly that flag on their private property or wear Confederate t shirts or attach flags all over their motorcycles as I'm sure you do! Knock yourself out!!!

Oh well, tried to give a compliment, but didn't work. So stepping back and saying "I agree to disagree" with a mean and mouthy spirit even if I do think that person has a lot of strength and could do good if applied in the right places.

Backhanded compliments never work, Fool. Why don't you find yourself a nice young man in the 60s to flirt with and quit following me around.

So a man is your answer to everything? It is funny that you deem the cross as a symbol of love and hope. A system devises to put people to death in a most horrendous method. Used by the Jews against their own, and Rome. Why not a loaf of bread, or the fish that is a symbol of closet Christians. The cross is as barbarous a symbol as the Confederate flag, dearie. And sick is the picture people hang on their wall of a bloody heart. If one wants a symbol of Jesus, why not the shroud that was imprinted supposedly with his image before his rebirth? No, lets use the picture of him hanging, bleeding, on a cross in agony like something out of the Marquis De Sade's collection. I find both Christ on the Cross and the bleeding heart offensive. Smacks of persecution, torture, murder of a good Rabbi, hatred and even today...death to anyone of a different belief. But, you dont see me picketing to remove them.

Why do you stupidly assume that everyone with an opinion pickets? Probably the same reason you stupidly assumed in your 2nd to last post that folks who don't want the Confederate flag on Capitol grounds are going to "knock on the door and bi*ch" if someone is flying that flag in their own yard. Do you always assume others will commit extreme actions or put words in their mouths if they do not agree with you?

I understand that since you do not believe in our Heavenly Father, you enjoy spitting on the cross. When the vast majority of people see a cross, they think of love and hope, (and yes, many atrocities have occurred in the name of religion, everyone knows that) but when the majority of folks see the Confederate flag, they see hate and hurt. The flag had been retired from the state grounds until the 60s Civil Rights Movement...after the Movement ended and Blacks were treated more humanly, racist Lawmakers decided hanging that dang flag on Capitol grounds was the "thang to do to preserve history". So, you go about your day hating the cross....it's your business and your right, and I'll go about my business hoping the Confederate flags come down from Southern Capitols to help promote peace and harmony.

This is the flag of the Confederate States. PERIOD!!! It is NOT a symbol of racism and hate. Those that see it as such are bigots. I see no reason to take this flag down.

Individual states do not have the right to say no to the Supreme Court concerning same sex marriage. The same as they have no right to say no to the President or Congress.

No, but some counties in this state have today announced they will no longer sell marriage license to anyone, nor will they continue performing marriage cerimonies. They say their handbook of rules and regulations say that to sell marriage license is up to each county to decide. Wonder when the rule book will be changed?

Evidently, people who actually live in the South have determined the Confederate Battle Flag is inappropriate.

Majority of House, Senate support taking down Confederate flag

The S.C. Legislature has amassed the support necessary to remove the Confederate battle flag from the Statehouse grounds, potentially ending a decades-long, divisive battle over the banner’s fate, according to a survey of lawmakers led by The Post and Courier.

The poll of lawmakers has determined that both the House and the Senate have achieved the two-thirds majority needed to take the flag down, if all supporters were to cast their votes. At least 33 senators and 83 House members say the flag should go.

“I just think that it’s time,” Rep. Mike Forrester, R-Spartanburg, said Monday. “It’s causing too many problems. ... I think it needs to be in a place of honor, but probably not on the Statehouse grounds.”

The issue has heated up following the June 17 killing of nine people, including a state senator, at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, allegedly by a white supremacist who is pictured with a Confederate flag in photos on the Internet.

Members of both chambers have been notified that they are scheduled to return to Columbia on July 6 at 1 p.m. to tackle vetoes and the flag debate. A vote in the Senate could potentially occur that same day.

A team of Post and Courier reporters has been surveying lawmakers since last week to pin down their positions on the issue. On Monday, the newspaper compared its results with survey findings from the South Carolina Press Association and the Associated Press, and it was determined that sufficient support existed in the two chambers to take the flag down.

The flag was placed atop the Statehouse dome in 1962 in what some saw as a show of defiance to integration and the civil rights movement. After mass protests, it was moved to a flagpole next to a Confederate monument along the street in front of the Capitol in 2000 after a compromise was worked out between black lawmakers and the majority Republicans. The compromise also dictated the two-thirds majority needed to move the battle flag.

The Senate achieved that milestone last week, with the survey showing that 72 percent of the chamber supported the flag’s removal. The House hit the two-thirds mark on Monday.

Some lawmakers were quick to throw their support behind the effort. Others were more circumspect, taking additional time to chat with constituents or waiting until most of the funerals in Charleston had taken place.

Rep. Alan Clemmons, R-Horry County, finally weighed in over the weekend, explaining his position in a lengthy post on his Facebook page. He said he planned to support the flag’s removal in honor of the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, a state senator killed in the shooting.

“While I have long regarded the flag as a symbol of Southern history and heritage, it has clearly been co-opted by those who harbor feelings of racial enmity, and it has become a symbol of division and hatred,” he stated. “For that reason, I can no longer support flying the Confederate battle flag on the grounds of the State House in Columbia.”

Rep. Neal Collins, R-Easley, expressed similar sentiments in his own Facebook post, lamenting that a banner he associated with heritage and pride had become a symbol of hate for others.

“And this is the turning point for me — any symbol endorsed by a state should unify her people,” he stated. “The Confederate Battle Flag certainly does not. Rather, it divides in unimaginable ways as evidenced last week. This is why the flag should be removed to a museum.”

Others were a bit more nuanced. Rep. Rick Quinn, R-Lexington County, told the Associated Press Monday that he thinks the battle flag must come down, but he would be open to discussing another flag from the Confederacy taking its place to memorialize ancestors killed in the Civil War.

So far, only 11 lawmakers have signalled their intent to oppose furling the flag. The remainder in both chambers either haven’t decided, won’t say where they stand or have not responded to multiple requests from The Post and Courier to state their position.

College of Charleston political science professor Gibbs Knotts said he was a bit surprised at the strong support in the conservative Legislature to remove the flag. But he said it likely reflects a “big public shift” that has taken place recently in South Carolina and nationally toward removing symbols of the Confederacy.

House members have introduced two bills that call for the battle flag’s removal. But the bills are expected to be channeled through committees, potentially delaying a final vote for several weeks.

Senators, however, allowed for a bill in that chamber to skip the committee process last week. That could mean that senators might take the first vote as early as July 6, sending it to House members and potentially settling the issue before their bills

These fine "Suthen" Klansmen hail from North Carolina to protest in Columbia SC....and it's all about their heritage...

KKK Chapter To Hold Confederate Flag Rally On S.C. Capitol Grounds

ByCAITLIN MACNEALPublishedJUNE 30, 2015, 10:20 AM EDT 3038 Views

The Ku Klux Klan will hold a protest on the South Carolina capitol grounds over the state's decision to consider removing the Confederate flag, the Post and Courier reported.

Brian Gaines, a spokesman for the South Carolina Budget and Control Board, confirmed to Politico that the Loyal White Knights of the KKK, which is based in Pelham, N.C., reserved the capitol grounds in Columbia on July 18 from 3 to 5 p.m. for the rally. Gaines said that the capitol allows all groups to reserve the grounds for events, regardless of ideology.

The chapter's grand titan, James Spears, told Politico that the group will protest "the Confederate flag being took down for all the wrong reasons."

"It’s part of white people’s culture," Spears said.

The homepage of the Loyal White Knights' website currently features a message regarding the Confederate flag, telling group members to "say no to cultural genocide."

Although the KKK will be permitted to hold a protest on the capitol grounds, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) said that the state does not support the event.

"This is our state, and they are not welcome," Haley said in a statement, according to the Post and Courier.

Ok..want to talk about separation of church and state maggie? There has been fights over nativity scenes and Xmas trees on government property for years. People protest they have no place in court houses or state capital lawns. I view them as statuary or pretty and have no problem with them. If something has meaning to you..it matters. If no meaning..who cares. The flag has meaning to racists one way and history to another. And a third couldn't care less if they flew granny panties. But, there has to be those who try to shove THEIR meaning down everyone's throats and make the world conform to their wishes. What happened to us being the land of the free. One of the things that the Civil War WAS fought over.

We're pretty much beating a dead horse...I'll always believe that the Confederate Battle flag is offensive to Blacks and should not be flown on Capitol grounds any more than the Swastika should be flown in Germany on Government grounds. Carpet your house with the hate flag, I don't care.

South Carolina Republican Governor Nikki Haley's thoughts on the flag...this took guts...

"An aide to Haley said the governor’s decision came down to the example she would set for her children – a 17-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son.

“When the question of the flag arose, the governor, as the daughter of parents who encouraged her to focus more on what brings us together than what makes us different, it came down to one simple thing – she couldn’t look her son or daughter in the face and justify that flag flying at the state house, which should be a place of unity for the people of our state,” Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey told the Guardian.

By Monday, she made the declaration public – earning praise from local leaders and even Barack Obama, who at a eulogy for slain state senator Clementa Pinckney on Friday cited Haley’s “eloquence” on the flag and its painful symbolism for many."

These fourteen, what they say, all fer show
If y'all listen closely
What they all say is mostly
What they'll do, fer themselves, dontcha know

I went at a rendezvous to check the black powder shooters in the back woods. Started talking to a guy. He cringed every time they shot. He said he was shell shocked from Nam. I said if it bothers you, why stand back here. He said because he had to. Only way he could handle loud noises was by facing them. And the black powder was better than regular guns.

A friend asked me to go to the movie yesterday to see "MAX". Was about a dog who had lost his handler, and the after effects the dog had to deal with. Was a good story but a cheap production. Acting was a little lacking in some area's. Shame to take a good story and botch it up with bad acting.

According to polls... (conservative generated of course)

jeb is number one an donnie is number two...

What does that say about conservatives? They are political masochists. It's wasn't enough that jeb's brother raped America... They want MORE!!!

As for donnie being number two... After having a black man in the White House, they want a racist pig in there next...

(CNN)"I'm my own man." With that declaration of independence, Jeb Bush sought to distance himself from the disastrous presidency of his big brother. The same day he made that statement, though, he listed his foreign policy advisers. The list had 21 names. Seventeen of them had been advisers to George W. Bush, according to The Washington Post.

Then, speaking at an off-the-record event in Manhattan last week, Jeb Bush said, "What you need to know is that who I listen to when I need advice on the Middle East is George W. Bush."

And then, in an interview with Fox News' Megyn Kelly that aired Monday, Jeb was asked, "Knowing what we know now, would you have authorized the invasion (of Iraq)?" His answer: "I would've." He went on to repeat tired talking points about how the intelligence in 2003 had been "faulty."

Two days after his interview with Kelly, Jeb tried to clean things up. But like your little brother when he was 2, the harder he tries to clean up his mess, the worse it gets. He told Sean Hannity, "I don't know what that decision would have been. That's a hypothetical, but mistakes were made, as they always are in life."

Huh? What? Even with the benefit of a 48-hour delayed replay, Jeb can't answer a simple but powerful question: Knowing what we know now, would you have invaded Iraq? He doesn't know what decision would have been made -- made by him, it should be noted. He has no idea what he would do differently from his disastrous brother.

John Ellis Bush seems hellbent on reprising his brother's debacles. Call him Jeb W. Bush. What's next -- D*ck Cheney as veep? A dog named Barney? A "Mission Accomplished" banner?

Clearly, Jeb wants to take America back to his big brother's foreign policy of invasion and occupation. Less well-known, perhaps, is how he mirrors Dubya's domestic agenda as well:

• George W. Bush tried to partially privatize Social Security, which could have hurt seniors badly when stocks crashed in the Bush recession. Jeb Bush supported his brother's scheme, despite being governor of the state with the largest number of retirees. His current position should worry future retirees even more. He wants to raise the retirement age, guaranteeing a reduction in lifetime benefits for Gen Xers and beyond.

• George W. Bush inherited the Clinton surplus -- the largest in history -- and turned it into the largest deficit in history. He did so in part through massive tax cuts, which disproportionately benefited the wealthiest Americans. Amazingly, Jeb Bush has reportedly turned for advice to an architect of his brother's tax cuts for the rich. Jeb has said this year, "I am proud of President Bush for standing for what's right as it relates to tax policy. ... And we should make the (Bush) tax cuts permanent." Here we go again.

• Jeb's immigration proposal closely tracks his brother's path to legal status. This infuriates the GOP's conservative base. And if you want to see a tea partier's panties in a wad, remind him that Jeb's Common Core education plan is basically the little brother of W's No Child Left Behind.

• In 2010, CNN's Candy Crowley asked Jeb Bush where he disagreed with his brother "publicly or privately." He said, "I'm the only Republican that was in office when he was in office as president that never disagreed with him. And I'm not going to start now." When Candy pressed him, Jeb said, "Till death do us part."

These are not gaffes. They are sincere statements of belief, and we should take them as such. Even at this early stage of the 2016 campaign it is clear: Jeb Bush would take America back to the policies of his brother. He seeks a restoration of the presidency of George W. Bush.

To be sure, familial loyalty is a good thing. But many Americans -- including the author of this column -- think George W. Bush was the worst president of their lifetime. The notion of repeating his reign of error is terrifying to us. I'm sure the Ford family all loved the son of the family patriarch, Henry. But they're too smart to bring back the Edsel.
