Actually the presidents had more power at one time. Because of the distance and time it took to travel the president made decisions with out there consent and approval. This also included cabinet appointments. The Congress only met for a few months and then adjourned until next time. This is how they tried to kick Andrew Johnson out of the white house, but did not work. The president did these things all of the time. When the congress would reconvene they would look at it then and would bring up if they thought necessary. This is were recess appointments come in to play and the person will hold that office for one year with out Congressional approval.

Troy we live in a Republic not a Democracy. People get that wrong all of the time. With that the majority does not always get it's way. Plus if every time a decision had to be made we took a vote on it even less would be done, then there is now.

Something that changes the constitution should always be voted on by the people.

The last 14 amendments were not ratified according to the constitution. They were just added by congress including the one that allows congress to vote themselves a raise whenever they want. Tell me anyone else in this country that can vote themselves a raise when they want.
To protect themselves from an out of control government Caster.

yes they were ratified by the constitution. The people never ever directly voted on any of them. 1 through all. We have a representative government. That is a republic. The amendment is is brought up in congress it must pass a 2/3rds vote in both houses. if and when it passes it goes to the states where 2/3rds of the states must past it also. The representative governments you have at the state level votes on them up or down. The people of the state voted these people in just like congress. The problem is that once again I will explain this which I have done in another thread. When ask a vast portion of the U.S. citizens about those who represent them say. My political representative is doing a good job it is the rest of the SOB's that have voted in idiots. Now we all can not vote in idiots and the problem no one wants to take responsibility of voting in lousy people so it is every one else. It is us as citizens in the current attitude in this country of I will not take responsibility it has to be some one else's fault.

You might want to check that constitution again because there was supposed to be a constitutional convention to change the constitution but of course that was changed as soon as it could be sneeked in when people were living and did not have time to watch the government all the time.

allyourfornow......
You are not digesting my post properly. Yes, God grants us liberty, but if a government wants to deprive us of that God-given right, it can. Once again, I will repeat my point about liberty. Thomas Jefferson wrote "God gave us certain inalienable rights, among those life, [LIBERTY]and the pursuit of happiness." However, there are many countries where citizens do not enjoy liberty. Once again, look at the Muslim countries. Do you really believe that the women have liberty? I am not on a soapbox; I am just stating the facts. If you do not believe what I am saying, then prove to me that women in Muslim countries have liberty.
To answer your other post, yes you are correct in that the surge is working. There is lesss killing going on and less people being slaughtered by suicide bombers. I am going to ignore your sarcasm since people usually resort to that when they have nothing substantial to say.

biant...... Bringing Muslim countries into the mix does make sense since allyourfornow is under the allusion that because God gave us liberty, that all the peoples of the world enjoy that God-given right. I needed to bring in the Muslim countries to show he is wrong, that there are peoples in the Muslim countries who do not enjoy liberty.

but that is because of religion ....oh hell
look i don't believe in god anyway...so for me both points of view are a little off the topic....
i grew up in one of these muslim countries...i don't think you want my point of view tho...it's not as bad in some of them as you would like to believe....
it's the dogmas and attachments to belief systems, that (in my opinion) strip a person of their freedoms and authenticity...but we are conditioned and born into these structures and systems with hardly any opportunity to get out unless we revolt.
i was scandalous for my family...lol
i revolted...rebelled
i always wondered why not too many others did...fear i suppose....
