~ The only non-company manufactured canned meat I've had was "bear" from my uncle. He was a trapper in Alaska. I gave it a try but I wasn't too fond of it.

~ I don't have a garden so on canning here. And even if I were to get from the Farmers Market I still don't can. Now if I had a partner that was into it I would be his assistant but that's about it.

~ What I have wanted to do though is like a herb garden and maybe a tomato plant, maybe some squash. Small container garden type of stuff. Mind you I've never done it but I would like to try someday.

Google straw bale garden!
That sounds interesting.
Doesn't take up much room and you can break it down as compost after all is said and done!

you can "herb garden" on a window sill, and tomatoes do well in containers, but squash are spreaders and take lots of space..

we had spinach, lettuce, and green onions coming out our ears until this new heat wave, so that was almost all of June, all of July, and first week of Aug. then tomatoes started about 10th of July, want some?? they are cherry tomatoes and they are huge and lots of them. only 2 plants but crazy and will go until the second week in Nov. and the one plant of large tomatoes will start ripening in about a week and be done about same time as others. plus I have one squash plant and it has several of different sizes on now. it will be done in about 2 weeks.. oh and my beets and carrots will be ready to pull in about 2 weeks.. so all is good.. and tasty

usually I also have some of the little yellow pear tomatoes, but with him being in the hospital at planting time, I did not get very much in this year.. which is fine with me, as I get tired of so much sometimes and the neighbors lock their porch doors when they see me coming with more stuff [ not really but sounded good. can't be only my fault]]

My bucket plants have been sad. Dont know if lack of sun or maybe they are wearing out and need new barnyard. Enough for me though. I buy the neighbors garden. Dont can..if I cant freeze it, out of luck. Mom canned. For the price of stuff now, cost more to can at home. Plus the health risk of a bad can. Reason to avoid canning meat.
I am pissed off at Yahoo. They sent me that as of the 31st my messenger will die..no more legacy. So Fuzz jumped through hoops for an hour before the damned thing figured out I AM ME! And then it said wont do XP. Bite me!
The new verson improvement is animated emotos and picture posting. For that wont know anymore if someone is on or not. Send a message...well...what if I want to know now!? And no more contact list. Have to type in letter for it. And if not a yahoo account..gone. Type in email and since Joe is AOL said invalid. Guess what Yahoo messenger. Now YOU are INVALID to me. Screw you. I will find some other way to talk on the computer to Joe for free. Yahoo is failing..gee..this is a great way to regain. BLAH!

I dont know how to find it. I did find two others...tencent messenger and MSN messenger to check into more. I ran into a review site for all of them. And they had a ton of people just tearing the new Yahoo apart. Wanting the old back. Hate no contact list. Hate no way to see if someone is on line. No way to block someone unless YOU messenger them FIRST! I read about 20 and gave up.

It's Thursday and hotter than blazes out there. Those old bugs that are so loud in the heat of August sure are putting on their concert today. Too hot to tolerate the outside unless of course you're setting somewhere beside a running stream and just lathargic from the sound of trickling water and cool shade. How long has it been since you wiled away a few minutes with splashing your barefeet in a cool stream? Now that's a memory we all have.

I saw a red truck on the road when I went to lock up barn. hmmm Bobs with the busted spring? Nope..he was by the barn. So we talked. He said it belongs to some idiots who are leaf blowing gravel off our curve for the stupid Triathlon today. He said it was supposed to be last weekend and wasnt. And they never send notice to us like usual. We hate those pests. They take over the road, ride abreast and ignore traffic. Park across the road on blind hills and curves and act like how dare anyone try to drive the road to work. So when I was in bed last night, I heard it raining. And it kept up all night. Woke at 6 am..rain pouring down. Same at 7,8,9 and even at 11. HA HA! Enjoy yourself dumb asses.

Good neighbors are a blessing.. After my Ex and I split up I rented a Condo. My next door neighbor was a lady who had been widowed for 2 years.. She was a year older than me but looked and acted much younger than her years. She was a big help to me in many ways but especially with my laundry.. She advised me on what type of detergent to use, what to use bleach on and what not to use it on, what to wash hot and what to wash cold. She was also a good cook and taught me a lot about that. Other than teaching me home making skills it was also nice to have someone to have a drink with in the evening and discuss our day . I bought a small house after a few months and moved away but we kept in touch until she moved to Fla. to be near her Daughter.. I miss that Gal .

Already have my chuckle for the day. Heard a heavy noise from the street and saw my neighbors truck (which is the county road supervisior) and a tractor with bush hog. Have an area at the end of the street with an old farm fence and it grows up with honeysuckle vines and hard to see through before you pull onto the main road. Got tired of guessing if it was safe to pull out so went up with my clippers and snips middle of the week and cleaned it out. Neighbor came in from work about the time I was really working on the mess. I just threw up my hand and kept on working. Wondered then how long it would be before he got someout out here to mow the roadside. YEP, this morning. No use in complaining if you can do something about the problem, so I cleared enough so we could see to pull onto the road safely. Don't want to bother this guy over a 20 foot section of fence line because he certainly keeps our street cleaned in the winter.

I remember long ago when county boys helped you out. Then private contractors b*tched cutting into their cash cow, so the county got orders. Once people helped each other without worrying about money. We slid into the ditch once on ice right out of our driveway. A county truck was passing about then. He stopped and asked whats up. Husband told him. Guy said, well rules dont allow me to help. But, if a chain happened to get hooked onto my bumper while I was stopped, and I happened to move forward and then stopped again...I know nothing. So husband got our chain out, and we got pulled out.
Off to dentist today. Cancellation so got the call Friday for today. I am slated for deep clean and the third quadrant will get done today. So there goes $200. sigh...The 4th wont get done. It is bottom right...one molar and wisdom tooth. I asked dentist about advisability to mess with those. Wisdom tooth is held together with more bondo than tooth. He did it last time and said afraid to grind out old filling..tooth is too frail. And I need it or the last molar will cave in and out too when wisdom is gone. He thought a minute and said...yeah..best to not do the deep clean. Leave well enough alone. So now all the deep cleaning will be done. Just in time to start over.
What amazes me is no one can afford dentists and yet they have waiting lists. And the stupid government wont pay for dentists. Instead will pay for hospital and nursing home rehab when someone gets sick from bad teeth or not be able to eat.
Anywaaaaayyyy. office called and said can I come in a half hour earlier. Fine.

myself and 2 other neighbors did some chatting and exchanging things tonight. well, 2 of us exchanged and the third came out okay with stuff.. I gave one some tomatoes from my garden, and she gave us other 2 some fresh frozen corn on the cob.. also told me to go pick some grapes from her side of the fence, and while doing that they also gave me a zucchini and cucumbers.. and then I also gave the other lady 3 brand new sweater tops that have been in the drawer for about 8 years.. guess I was never really going to wear them, but she was thrilled to get them.. so it was an okay evening..

Ya, The world is changing. What's up with these walk in closets? They are almost as big (or bigger in some cases) than a bedroom! Filled with clothes you forgot you even bought.
Honey, have you seen my shoes? - there in the closet somewhere. (Yikes)

My rule of thumb is that if I don't wear something for the season (unless it's a dressy outfit) then I weed it out as I'm changing for the next season. If I haven't worn something in a year it's past time for it to go.

I turned the other bedroom into a walk in closet. Plus the others. And as said..filled with stuff I dont wear. I have been culling out the office proper. Guess I wont ever need those again. It is hard to toss stuff to Vinnys though. I know I spent good cash on it all. And if try to re-sell, cant get crap for it. And out in the country, rummage sales are useless. Especially when I were a small and the average size around me is a large or more. Or the style current is sweat slob or T tatter.

Time to get this day rolling. Home now after the yard sale run this morning and probably in for the day. Need to spend time getting my camping gear together as well as make a list of things so I can spend time with some pre-cooking to take with me. Don't want to spend my time at the campsite trying to get something cooked. I have tubs of stuff packed that has a label on it "camping", so need to get the sheets and towels in the laundry to freshen them up.

Hope your day is good and Sheza, enjoy your trip to GA and have a wonderful time with friends. Orz, don't be working this weekend even if it says Labor Day. It's really the opposite and means Non Labor Day.

Have a great holiday and enjoy to the max.

In the southern section of KY there is a corp of engineers campground and it's on land owned by the Federal Government. It's where the Cumberland River flows and is fed through the dam of the Cumberland Lake which was built in the late 40's for flood control. There is a generation station on the dam for electric power. They also have a National Rainbow Trout Hatchery, so keep the waters stocked with nice fish. The temperature is showing to cool a bit for next week with 60's at night. Such good sleeping and will need to take a blanket for the nights. Looking so forward to the trip.

Sheza, I make my taco's with pita bread.

Just enough room for chopped lettuce, meat, cheese, tomatoes, onions and sour cream.

They don't fall apart.

Always need a new building or one more room on the house.

Sheza, not camping yet but leaving in the morning. Will be thinking of all you and hoping to hear the call of a whipperwill. They are scarce past few years and their call brings back many good menories because we could hear them almost every night from our front porch.

Quote from connier:
about a month ago, we watched a golden eagle in the top of a neighbors tree, about 100 feet away. he was preening and so pretty.

I have to tell you all about my siting for the past few days.....Peac*cks....baby chicks! There is an area where I drive that there are herds of them. Dad's Mom's and now the offspring....crossing a road. Same time of morning it seems. And it seems also that they know I will stop for them and allow the crossover. Simple magnificent!!!!!

those little chicks are so cute..
we usually have a Blue Heron crane stop over at our creek twice a year, and it is about time for the 2nd sighting for this year.. oh, and also for the 2nd smelling of the skunk that runs the creek. we never see him, but he is rather odiferous on both times of his passing through.. these both are like rituals here.

I see eagles flying all the time. STAY away from my CHICKENS or else! In fall my river shore becomes a goose and crane sewer systems. yuck. Watch where you walk and dont wade in shallows! I miss the Whippoorwill. They have suffered decline. Although in the tree by bedroom at 1AM was NOT a blast. Well..actually it was! I have turkeys all over. The mom crosses the road and then the stream behind. Move it! I even have sea gulls around now that moved south off the lakes.
I put seeds out in an old satellite dish nailed sideways to my deck for birds. I walk outside and hear ole scream and holler...the red bellied woodpecker. FEED ME! I am WAITING!
Geeze Louise! Is it not fall with tons of seeds on plants, you lazy so and so!?

Damn cat snagged a chickadee. You are a bad cat and you will NOT keep it. So took it away. Tiny tiny bird..maybe young hatch?

Back to the sanity of home. Talk about having to aclimate going from a soft bed to a pop up camper with a 4 inch piece of foam rubber for a bed. Cooled drastically on Saturday and left for camping on Sunday. Two nights were around 50 degrees and so nice to set by a campfire then snuggle beneath heavy cover for the night. Good sleeping. Ate better there than at home. Took plenty of food and on the cooler days had vegetable soup.

Fishing was great. Since this stream is stocked by the National Fish Hatchery that is a part of the camping area they have a low limit on how many you can keep per day. Right now it's 5 per person, per day. There was a wounded warrier fishing day on Monday so the stream was stocked especially for that event and there were 12 and 14 inch rainbow trout for the taking. Freezer is now full of trout for some tasty dinners.

Warmed on Wednesday but still nice around the water. No fishing today because had to pack up and come home. Always makes me wish I'd reserved a few more days but it has to end sometime.

Wildlife was the subject I enterd when I opened this thread. Heard a noise the other morning while eating breakfast and there stood an 8 point buck not 20 feet from the picnic table. Then at night the skunks took over the joint. Of course they have no competition and if they want to roam beneath the picnic table you let them and see how far the other way you can go. There were 3 that made their rounds every night from campsite to campsite and they weren't in a hurry. Could almost set your clock by them. Come 7:30 you saw a movement in the weeks and YEP, they had come to visit. I was setting beside the campfire last night and caught a movement out of the corner of my eye. Not 10 feet beside me was this stripped little puddy cat. SHOOT....and that's putting it mildly. Didn't know I could move that fast.
