Rec'd one of those out of the blue newsletters in the mail yesterday that had an article for "10 ways to help kick the sugar habit". Thought I'd share

One reason for difficulty in kicking the sugar habit is because sucrose, frutose, and glucose that ends up in your body is addictive. It spikes your insulin level so you crace more, not just mentally but physically.

10 foods to help satisfy a sugar craving are:
Fruit smoothies with milk and yogurt
Plain or fruit yogurt
Oatmeal
Cinnamon (spices such as cinnamon can help youi overcome the sugar addiction). When you're craving ice cream try slicing a banana lengthwise and sprinkle raw fruits, nuts, and cinnamon on it. Cinnamon has been regulate blood glucose levels and reduce sugar cravings.
Apples
Nut or peanut butter
Dates
Beets
Sweet Potato
Vanilla

Since my daughter was diagnosed as hyperactive, I kept sugar away from her as much
as possible. No pop in the house or candy. She got fruit and nuts instead.

I suppose I threw a monkey wrench in some plans for the fall. There is a group of friends that always travel to the beach (after school starts and seasonal prices are better). Gone to Myrtle Beach, SC for 10 years. This year I've decided to do something different. Went online and searched for bus tours (let someone else do the driving). Found one for a week to Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC. Started passing word in case anyone else may be interested. It has started some disappointment among the crowd. A couple always ready to go except for when they can let one of the others make the reservations and they just crawl in the backseat and ride. NOPE, not this year. You want to go, then get your own transportation and find your own motel room because I'm going to be on a BIG BUS. LOL.

I'm sure the busses today are much nicer than the old busses of yesteryear! I rode a Greyhound a few times. I'll have to Google Greyhound - I wonder how many years they've been on the road.

I did a bus tour in 1990 for the National Parks in the western states. Was on the road 13 days and WOW, all the stuff I saw. Not saying it wasn't mostly from the bus window but wouldn't have had the experience any other way. What I thought at the time was same number of days and half the states would have been better because you would have had time to really enjoy the surroundings. Anyway, wouldn't trade that experience. I lucked up with it. Was traveling alone and opted to have the tour company match me with a room mate. Ended up very lucky. Matched me with a lady from FL who had a spirit of adventure and due to problems related to husbands death and teenage daughter who couldn't get it together after the loss, this lady was confined for 7 years. She was more than ready for an adventure. Before two days were over we were having so much fun that people sort of migrated to us. Ended with a group of 8 who really enjoyed the trip. Someone was always making everyone laugh. One gal was from the UK and she was in the US for the summer. Felt very comfortable with us, so she stuck like glue. THEN...there were two ladies who just hung around to see what was going on and to keep an eye on the third (they were school teachers). Gossips of the bus so to speak. They lasted two days and then decided we were too wild for them. That poor girl was being bullied and couldn't enjoy herself. One night we were in Deadwood, and our motel was about a mile from the main strip. We opted to walk into town for dinner at one of the casino's. Of course, gossips had to tag along. The girl from the UK kept saying she wanted to meet a "real cowboy". On the way back to the room we passed this little joint and the honkey tonk music was blasting. The girl from UK decided she was going in so we lined up behind her and most of us grinning because we were going to give these ladies the night of their life. NOPE, they froze in their tracks and decided they were going back to the motel. OK, so go. Once they were down the street, we continued walking without going into the honkey tonk. 10 minutes later it came one of those unannounced downpours and we ran beneath a gas station canopy for shelter. Those two were well past any shelter they could seek. Talk about drowned rats. BUT....they didn't follow us again. LOL.

Greyhound Lines, Inc., usually shortened to Greyhound, is an intercity bus common carrier serving over 2,700 destinations across North America. The company's first route began in Hibbing, Minnesota, in 1914, and the company adopted the name The Greyhound Corporation in 1929. Since October 2007, Greyhound has been a subsidiary of Scottish transportation company FirstGroup, but continues to be based in Dallas, Texas, where it has been headquartered since 1987. Greyhound and sister companies in FirstGroup America are the largest motorcoach operators in the United States and Canada.

I understand they were started on the Mesabi Iron Range in northern MN back in the 1910s or 20s. Last I heard they were based out of Phoenix and coming out of a bankruptcy.

Problem is many yogurts have as much sugar as soda! So does some fruit juice although metabolized differently.

Recipe for yogurt...sort of.....
Buy Dannon plain yogurt. one cup added to one quart of reconstituted powdered
milk. Heat to lukewarm.Pour into containers and cover . Let stand overnight in a warm
place . It should be set by morning. Refrigerate promptly. Add fruit as you please.
No sugar added!

Too bad you cant pop out a baby. Then welfare would be happy to support you for 18 years! The only way a senior can get help is if they spend every dime they have and can never get back on their own feet. Screw the government. Other way is run for Congress!

My guess is medicaid becuase thats a state program and you are limited to how much money you can have to receive benefits. If it is medicare then must be on the SSI (social supplement income and is Federal). They also limit amount of money you have to qualify for benefits. Medicare is the program you pay into when working and the company you work for contributes as well, then you have more choices and are not limited as the state and supplement income dictates. These programs feel that if you have that much money on hand then you don't need assistance. Thinking the limit of funds is $2,500 for Medicaid and if you go over that, then they stop your assistance.

The crap in this country is that the gov. wont give you just what you need. Any saving counts against you even if it is for funeral or to use later for living or medical.
Husband told me that when they went on strike for 4 months..guy he worked with was struggling. He went to welfare and asked them to repair his car, pay the utility bills he was getting behind on and give him foodstamps. The intake person asked him and his wife a million questions. Then told him the car was too old and they would get him a newer one so his kids wont be traumatized by other kids for a crappy ride. And they would get them into a house cause she was preggers and no way it was right for kids to share bedrooms in the trailer house. He told the person he was in trouble living on $40 a week strike pay and when they settled, he wouldnt qualify anymore for welfare. And the car and trailer were paid for. How the hell would he pay for a newer car and a house after dumped. The person said all or nothing. So he said stick it. His wife was Indian. She went to the tribe and they said fine..fixed the car and paid the bills behind and gave them just what they NEEDED at that point.
This gov wants people to spend every dime they have so they can never stand on their own two feet again and will stay in the system. That way social workers have a job.
Any person should be able to get the minimum of assistance for the time they need it. NO more no less.

It was medicaid. I did have it and part A Medicare. They cut me off medicaid because
I have saved too much money. The limit here of income saved is only$1,500.
After stressing me out over this for three months I just got a Medicare card that includes
part B too.My social security is so low that they aren't charging me for part B medical
insurance.
It didn't help with my glasses though. Medicare won't pay for them unless I get
cateracts surgery which the eye doctor said I won't need for a couple more years.
I paid for them with a credit card today . Also got some of those sunglasses that fit over
My regular glasses to drive. I got it done at Walmart. It was half the price my glasses
cost me from anywhere else. I got them there last time They work just fine.

I’m going to chime in here with a type of health testimony and some might think I’m crazy and maybe it's TMI. I'll apologize in advance that this is so long ……. Course you don’t have to read it.

In the fall of last year (2015) I had been researching “poor Gut Health” because the negative symptoms were the same for health issues I had been experiencing and taking meds for. One reason I was researching is that I had been taking medications to treat the symptoms and I wanted to address the root of the issue. (Read, get off prescription drugs.) I was hearing more and more negative information about the synthetic prescription drugs I was taking and how with prolonged use they damage your organs. I guess I kind of had a wakeup call. So looking into cleaning up my gut and eating cleaner (non-processed food, less sugar and caffeine) I kept reading that probiotics was the way to go. But which one, the cost varied and were SOOO expensive, they all claim to be the best?????

The health issues I was experiencing were a list of what are so common these days and sadly people chalk up to “old age and being the new normal” we have been fed that it’s expected, after all we are getting older and basically accept it and take more drugs. I’m going to admit I had major brain fog, when you live alone and you see so much about Alzheimer’s it’s scary and I was beginning to wonder about myself. I had NO energy and would wake up so tired before I did anything, serious anything, first thing in the morning and I was tired, major fatigue!!! Here I was thinking about moving to Texas to be with my young grandchildren and I was depressed at the idea because I felt as if I had no energy to enjoy my time with them, I was THAT tired ALL the freakin' time. Even though people didn’t know it, I was depressed so much of the time, I had no motivation. I tried to eat better and less and even when I would eat small portions my stomach just seemed to expand and bloat, I was like WTH, and always had bad heartburn.

I said, I have GOT to change, I’m not going to accept this as normal, I have life I want to live!!!

I was invited to an event that addressed “Gut Health, Body Inflammation and Sugar Levels” I was feeling like I was to the point I had nothing to lose!!

Why am I telling you all this personal stuff??? Because the changes I made have brought me back to life in ways I could not have imagined!!!! Because of my changes it is hard NOT to share with those that might be experiencing the same negative health issues and tell them they do not have to accept it!!!!

After attending the event I had some sample and won a door prize of samples and started to take the products (natural supplements) and placed an order. Within the first 4-5 days my energy increase, I was thinking clearer AND OMGosh I was waking up refreshed and developing and overall feeling of wellbeing, like the sky opened up and was letting the sunshine into my heart. I know it sounds like an infomercial. Then when I got the rest of the products and taking them I continued to improve my negative health issues. One was, I no longer get the boated tummy after a meal and I take less medication for heartburn, someday I hope to eliminate that all together.

If you want to know more details you can message me. I could tell you soooooo much more about poor “gut health” and how it affects the brain and other areas of our body. Sad to say I’ve abused my body for far too long and it’s about time I did something to try and help reverse, repair damage. I have been blown away by my results of using these health and wellness supplements and it has made such a difference in my life I want to shout it to everyone especially older folks like me that are feeling like life is totally beginning to suck when they want so much more life to live!! I think I said that already.

I laugh at myself because the idea of “Growing old gracefully” is for the birds, you have to fight for your health and do what’s right and not give up. I might try and be graceful but deep down I’m feeling like I’m trying to scale a mountain for better health and the grade is steep, it’s hot, hard and a struggle with knuckles bare and sweat on the brows I’m not going to give up on a quality life with my family and I hope I’m never a burden for them. I pray I just die in my sleep at a ripe old age while I still have my wits about me and not being dependent on anyone else.

........ and yes as Sankie said those things are what you need to do and I know that but these supplements were the tool I needed to curve the cravings so I can eat in moderation and make better choice, before the obsession with sweets would win out. These products help with sugar levels so the craving are manageable if not eliminated. All the while detoxing my body.

sorry I could go on and on about this. I admit I'm not perfect, I'm not there yet but God I'm thankful I'm not where I was a few months ago!!!

Interesting info Sheza.. Thanks for sharing that.. I think it's important to know that if we don't feel as good as we want to or don't have as much energy we should never accept it as getting older.. We have to work on improving things ..

I take no pills and wont. For anything they cure, they give you something else. I do take around an average of 20 supplements a day though. And try to eat my oatmeal.
What ticks me off about Medicare and Medicaid is that they do nothing for eyes and teeth. They refuse to pay for a filling. They let people get sick from infection and pay for a hospital stay. They let people starve from bad teeth and then pay for their hospital stay. They will gladly pay to pull all the teeth but I dont know if they pay for dentures. And they wont pay for glasses but will pay for the HOSPITAL stay when someone falls down the stairs1 Penny wise and pound foolish! Teeth are VERY important to health! And this criteria is set by congressmen sporting toilet bowl caps and implants paid for by the taxes we paid!

^^^ I know, crazy right!!!

When I hear ads on TV about a prescription drug and listen to the long list of possible side effects I cringe. I realize there ARE some that you really do have to have but for the most part ......... I'm doing my best to do without.

Anyone been to San Francisco? An aquaintance just returned from a 21 day bus tour which took in the National Parks, etc. Spent two days in San Francisco and said it was the dirtiest place she'd ever seen. As they were traveling through they went down two streets which was total nudist. Said street people were piled up everywhere. Just wondering if you've been there and what you're thoughts were about the city.

Been to Lake Tahoe myself. Is a beautiful area. Was in the mountains at Lake Tahoe and the casino kept us longer than planned. Getting onto dark, looked outside and snowflakes the size of half dollars. Beautiful scenery and the pines started sagging from weight. Was getting worried about getting off the mountain and back to Reno that night. The dealer at the black jack table said not to worry it would leave as soon as it stopped. He was right. Thing is I was not at the black jack table but partner was and was having such a good time I thought he was drunker than a skunk. Turened out just a bunch of guys drunk on the atmosphere and having a great time. One guy at the table was a doctor and second time I showed up he scooted a stack of chips at me and said "go have fun". Heck, I took those chips just so I could pay for a room in that hotel for the night. When I left Reno that morning I only took a few $ with me and was what I had allocated to spend for the day. It was gone and thinking I may have had $10 at the most in my pocket, a drunk at the black jack table, a mountain to go over with a pile of snow. Talk about being worried for a little while. Heck, guess I could have slept in the backseat of the rental car if I had to. LOL.

Sheza, when you were in Tahoe did you visit the Ponderosa where they filmed Bonanza?

Sankie ... nope. We were there on a company business trip. We were poor and broke as church mice. Ex had just graduated and landed this job, and so happens he came on board right as they were having their district meeting. I had to borrow a dress from my sister for the formal dinner and I was still wearing maternity tops even though our baby was 7 months old only because we couldn't afford to go shopping. If shopping was done it was for him to have work clothes. I had to take in my tops so I wouldn't still look pregnant. We couldn't afford to gamble even if we wanted to. We did take the rental car for a little while and drive around in the mountains and see different views of the lake. But we were on limited time to do anything on our own. Even so it was a fun trip.

Flying by the seat of your pants (ahhh, the good old days)
Ya didn't have people telling you for 30 some odd years that you couldn't do it THAT WAY! So ya went ahead and did it anyway.
I liked those days - Didn't know a lot about life, but was bound and determined to get from point A, To point B. Ya had to dust yourself off a few times, But ya got there.
Sometimes all it takes is two people with the same vision and trust in each other to keep moving forward
BLIND FAITH

Sometimes you have to "believe it" first (then you'll see it)!

We learned to make do when first married..thats for sure. Todays kids dont even know they are poor. Parents bend over backwards to buy them their "toys". that is what is half the trouble. They get into the real world and cant cope. The most fun we had traveling was in a car that we slept in.
We walked down for mail yesterday and I see yellow tabs on center line. Now what?! Joe said they are reflectors. No they are NOT! Just plastic...maybe bike rally and markers for route. So we go around trying to come up with ideas. Fuzz got home and said they were not there in AM and run all the way up to Wolfram road. ??
So Joe is packing to head home..I go out with water jugs and here a big truck..go stand and look for it to pass. Tanker going slow and another truck is behind out of sight. Painting lines? No. So we both end up standing watching. And figure out..oh hell...they are paving with that oil and gravel crap. So I said better go left and up to 16. When he called he said they had that blocked so he HAD to drive on the crap all the way to 2 miles neighbor. (By the way..the guy with gal problem..and no..he is still wanting her!). He said he drove really slow and was Ok except some big truck had to fly by him.
I dont get this idea. Half the gravel ends up in the ditchs. Althoigh...hmm..I need gravel for cement to add to sand and portland....lol..

Orz, laughing about your needing gravel for projects and HUMM...looking at what's in the ditch line. Reminded me of a situation in early summer. There was a new house being built on the farm across the road from me. The connected their drive to our street and when they put the culvert in, there was too much gravel. The county dumped it on the side of the street. It laid there for almost a month and I needed some, so son took his trailer down and started helping himself. Another neighbor came out and asked "what are you doing". Son replied "Stealing off the country". Neighbor didn't know what to say and hung around a few minutes acting intimading. Son picked up a second shovel and said to him "looks like this may fit your hand, want to help". Guy trucked it back up his drive to mind his own business.

How can some be so quick to say something to another that isn't complimentary, but when they get a response along the same lines it isn't taken lightly. OH, she or he was just nasty with what they said to me.

Example: I have this cousin who is quick to say something that isn't all that nice, such as "Oh, I wondered what happened to your face". She was speaking to another who had recently gone through a tough divorce and the stress was showing on the lady's face.

You just suck it up and consider her ignorant, and go on without making an a** of yourself. I had to attend a funeral service yesterday for a relative. Felt it a family obligation. Didn't look forward to some encounters that would also be there.

BUT.....enough. The cousin of subject is now so round she could roll over a hill like a barrel. After the service everyone was mingling and saying hello, etc. She said to another "My you've lost so much weight" and didn't sound the least complimentary with it. The answer was "YES, and I can see who found it". She huffed off with the red azz. Couldn't have happened to a better person. Can't help but giggle when I think of it. That's mean of me but

ROFL! I hate people who do those back hand "compliments". They think if they word it right, the person wont catch on. Mom always used to say calling the kettle black.

LOL..I just happened to buy a purse at Goodwill that has her face and name on it. Inside it is an "official" labeled Betty Boop.

You should Google the Betty Boop fan club - I'm sure there is somebody that would buy it.

This has not been a good year for my small garden.. I reaped a few maters and cukes but they have been small like my garden..
