Tater, Welcome to the baseball thread and I hope we will all see you making many more plate appearances as this long season begins.

If your Bravos could bring Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, and Avery back out of retirement I've got a feeling that the opposing team would still have ZERO runs on the board late in the game.

@ Sorp,

While I was working out yesterday on the treadmill at my health club with a tv monitor in front of my face and my earpiece in I thought I heard the ESPN announcer say while I was watching and listening to the Yankees game that the Yankees have lost six straight opening day games. Is this correct or did I hear it wrong?

Tater, 30 years might be close but your Braves just got a win with him starting on the mound as a -200 underdog which paid +180.

Silly, Maybe MLB needs to rethink their early season scheduling by scheduling more games in the south early in the season and more games in the north late in the season and particularly with home and home series within a division.

I remember before the season started that you were concerned about the Pirates opening the season in Boston in the snow and look where it's snowing today.

Just about everything in life comes down to the almighty dollar. All professional sports have seasons that are way too long just to make the extra revenue. Baseball is a warm weather game but yet many games that are scheduled in northern cities in early April have to be cancelled due to cold weather and the precipitation it brings.

College baseball even starts in March and many of the northern teams go on two and three week road trips to play in the south since they can't play any of their games at home.

I've played in the north in 30 to 40 degree weather and nothing hurts much worse to the hands than to foul off a pitch breaking a bat in that kind of weather or to be hit in a rib by a pitch on a cold day.

Yep, but the Cardinals bats need to come alive more. Baring injury the Cardinals starting rotation should be pretty solid and with Rosey coming off the DL today it should certainly help the bullpen. There's only one problem and it's that the Cubs happen to be in the NL Central too.

man did my Pirates meltdown yesterday at Boston.
they have gone 0-30 with runners in scoring position!!
So much for changing the 1st and 3rd base coaches. If you got zero on base, how is the baserunning supposed to improve?

Silly, Don't ask for Hurdle's head just yet because neither he or his 1st and 3rd base coaches swing the bat to get on base.

What am I saying since my cold team opens a series in New York tonight against Sorp's hot team?

My claim to fame is I got a broken bat single to right field off Gibby in spring training once upon a time. Come to think about it Gibby broke a lot of bats as well as hearts among hitters who thought they could hit his stuff.

I have a lot of true Bob Gibson stories. One is when he threw a 3-2 fast ball to Willie Mays on a Sunday afternoon in August when the temperature was 103 in St. Louis in the 9th inning with two outs and nobody on base with the Cardinals leading 1-0. Mays hit a one hopper back to the mound. Gibson just stared at Mays as he was running towards first. Instead of easily throwing Mays out at first he ran his a** down and tagged him before he got to first.

For those of you who don't know Bob Gibson was also a Harlem Globetrotter and one of the best athletes I ever had the honor and privilege of being around.

Tommy amazing stat about Yanks...in 1998 started 1-4 and after 12 games 8-4...

This year started 1-4 and after 12 games 8-4

1998 yanks won their 13th game

Game 13 tomorrow nite is against White sox

1998 Yanks won 125 games counting the playoffs and World Series...

Of course this pace won't continue but maybe it will...the first 12 games have been fun...

Sorp, Congratulations to your Yankees in getting their 7th win in a row after a rough start.

Here is another amazing stat about how quickly the worm can turn:

Two weeks into the season these five contenders find themselves in last place in their respective divisions:

Toronto
Cleveland
Texas
St. Louis
San Francisco

Best wishes to you tomorrow!

Silly, Sorp and I have been exchanging emails for a long time and I'm hoping and praying that his surgery yesterday will get him back on the right track toward better health. I'm sure I'll be hearing from him again soon when he feels like writing.

I'm sure you didn't want to hear the news about your center fielder Marte getting suspended for 80 games effective immediately for testing positive but in truth he was only hitting .241. I still think CLUTCH is a natural to play center field for the Pirates but maybe that AAA player from Indianapolis who the Pirates have called up will fill the gap for you until Marte returns after the all star break.

Trevor May isn't it? They told us we'd be WORLD SERIES bound once Meyer and May and Buxton and Sano came up! For some reason LA took Meyer. May is out for the year. Buxton is going on a crash diet so he can hit his weight. (He's like 090 so far) and Sano is the only one producing! Buxton is a hell of a fielder though.

(Tommy) So far the O's are doing good. They beat the Reds last night tonight they will try to win the series. When do you think your Cards will turn it around ?

Good question Joe. The Cardinals starting pitching rotation is pretty solid but their bats have been asleep so far this season. This NL Central is already crazy with the Pirates sweeping the Cubs and then the Cardinals sweeping the Pirates.

(Tommy) With baseball you never know what will happen. Two weeks from now your Cards could be in 1st place. My O's beat the Reds again to win the series. I hope they keep playing like this.

Joe, that AL East looks like it will be tight all season long among your O's and two or three other teams. It usually takes until the all star break to find out who the contenders vs. the pretenders are and in many cases even longer.

Madison Bumgarner on DL for first time in career with bruised ribs and shoulder sprain sustained during dirt bike accident.

( Tommy) I agree the AL East will be tight. Tonight we start a tough 3 game series with the Red Sox.

I guess he was thinking he wouldn't get hurt. You were a jock once upon a time and most of them think they can kick superman's butt. I guess a dirt bike is tougher than superman. Do you remember last year when Tom Brady jumped off a high cliff into a pool of water below a waterfall? The Patriots were not too happy about that jump even though Brady landed perfectly in the water.

Get well soon!
