I remember an old grocery market that was here years ago that had a dirt floor.. They would put a layer of sawdust over the dirt,, shovel it up every few days and put a new layer down .. I doubt if the County Health Dept. would allow that now..
I still use sawdust when I can find it to sweep my body shop floor with.. Sprinkle it around, dampen it with a mist from the water hose and sweep.. It holds the dust down while sweeping ..

~ Yep, growing up in Texas I remember it well the beer joints and later the honky tonks and dance halls having the sawdust on the floor. The smell of sawdust, stale beer and cigarettes is burned into the memory banks of my mind. I was always drug along to the beer joints and would end up falling asleep in a back booth before the night was over.

I remember one of my brothers liking to play with these little green army men. I used to find them in all sorts of positions all over the yard - crawling on their belly for one. There were even some stretcher carrier army men.

Our one room school was smack in the middle of oil wells. Just before school was out for the summer we had a day from the books but worked hard. They put crude oil on the floors and swept it in. Then just think the big pot bellied stove sat smack in the middle of the room and a roaring fire in the winter. If that place had caught fire it would have gone up like a torch. Can't imagine all the noise a parent would make these days if their kids had to endure such. Sure made you tough.

the makeshift parachute reminded me of a neighbor boy that is around 30 now, but when so much younger he liked standing on our porch and visiting. so one windy day he said something about flying in that wind.. well, not really thinking much about it, I said to just get an old sheet and jump off the porch rail, and see if the wind would carry him.. okay, about 10 minutes later he was out there with one of his Mom's best sheets.. Oh my, we all had a good laugh about that. and we are still neighbors and friends.. and no, he did not fly at all..

I know old butcher shops used to change the sawdust daily. Used it to soak up the blood. The one bar in the Dells used to give out peanuts and told people to toss shells on the floor. Was fun to walk in heels! I never could bring myself to do it. Taught to keep floor clean.

~ Parking ~ or having the police come up on ya while parked?? The place is called "Brackenridge Park" it has some quiet areas with trees and such. We just had us leave after he checked our ID's.

LOL. I bought fish sticks a couple years ago. Man..what the heck are they made from, fish guts? Nah..fish FLAVORING and breading. Yuck. They can NOT have been that bad 30 years ago!
I used to go to the dime store. They sold lengths of angora yarn, pre-cut, just for gals to wrap the beaus ring with so it fit. Some wore his ring on a chain. Most of us spent an hour winding yarn around it til it fit. And the yard got dirty and finally we would buy new and spend half an hour trying to unwind to re-wrap.
We used to go parking in the back fields near my farm. Drove in one night and saw my guys buddys 55 chevy. He turned off our lights and coasted near it. Then hit the lights and tore off. Buddy came barreling out of the car fit to kill. lol.
I remember going the second year to see the same movies we went to see the first year they were at the drive in. The second year was to actually WATCH them.

Penn I think. Dads pa in Germany got a job once selling coal. He pushed a cart down the street and was supposed to yell..COAL COAL COAL..as he went. The frau would holler down from an apartment. He would then load a pail and tote it up the stairs to it. He was too vain and proud to yell so his sales stunk and he got fired. Norm for him. He was a trained pastry chief. But, couldnt keep a job because of attitude..no one appreciated him enough.

We had a coal furnace at the house in North Branch. Every so often the coal truck would come and lower a chute through a basement window and fill the coal bin. Not uncommon back in those days.

A/C that was a water cooler. That's what we called it anyway, I guess that's the right word. It actually had water in it and sometimes droplets would spit out of it.

Had a hard time finding a picture of one.

I hated those big wood storm windows (two windows in one frame) trying to hold it and hit that hinge just right, on a shaky ladder!
I think my blood pressure just went up a couple of points just thinking about them (just kidding) I remember the steel triangle (to hold the window) and re chalking the whole thing - Then paint

My eldest sister had polio when she was a couple months old. When the symptoms hit it seemed like the normal child fever, etc. but in the middle of the night fever raged and she had a bit of brain damage as a result. She was crippled on her right side (leg and arm) and was 14 years old when they were expert enough to do surgery for the crippling of polio. She was the baby of the family always. Mentally matured to around 12 years old and never in her 69 years of life gave up her baby dolls. She learned to read the basic childrens books and loved to color. Was a handful for Mom to care for after she became an adult, but she hung in there and defended her to her dying breath. After Mom's passing the job fell to me to see that she was cared for. By then she was in an adult rehab facility and enjoyed her freedom so much she refused to go back home, so lived the rest of her life there zipping up and down the hallways in her wheelchair and always laughing and loving.

Noone knows the stress and issues with the handicapped children until they have first hand experience. In some ways they are a blessing because they tend to love so deeply and are a bright light in your days. She's been gone 3 years now and I miss her terribly but each year for her birthday she gets a new baby doll. This year someone else left her one as well, so she has two.

Joan got that in the last epidemic about 53. She never walked without braces after she was 1 1/2. She has braces on both legs now and a fancy wheelchair and van. She's 64, never was effected mentally, but she slowly is going down hill every time I see her at some group outing. Had some scoliosis because of it and spend a lot of time in the hospital. Still, that had nothing to do with why we broke up.

I know I was vaccinated.I was surprised to know people with polio around my age. A guy who worked for auto dealer was so crippled up he could not stand straight. It kept getting worse from school years. I cant see how he managed to work and climb in and out and around a car! And my late bosses wife has a bum leg from hers. Guess we were on the cusp for the vaccine. I know that vaccines can mess up, but wonder at the brains of those today who refuse to have kids done. I would rather take a chance on the shots than the diseases!

I remember my Mom had the album for West Side Story.

I just listened to one of the songs and really listened to the lyrics and it was quite interesting.

No interstate to come to a standstill with tourists heading back.
